FlashCopylogicaldrives.AFlashCopylogical driveisalogicalpoint-in-time imageof anotherlogical drive,calleda baselogicaldrive,thatisinthe storagesubsystem.AFlashCopyimageisthelogicalequivalent ofa completephysicalcopy,butyou createit muchmorequicklyanditrequires lessdiskspace.

Because aFlashCopyimageisahost-addressablelogicaldrive,youcan performbackupsbyusingtheFlashCopyimagewhilethebaselogical drive remains onlineanduser-accessible.Youcan alsowritetotheFlashCopy logical driveto performapplicationtestingorscenariodevelopmentand analysis.ThemaximumnumberofFlashCopylogicaldrivesthatare allowedisone-halfofthetotalnumberof logicaldrivesthataresupported byyourcontrollermodel.

VolumeCopy

TheVolumeCopyfeatureisa firmware-basedmechanismfor replicating logical drivedatawithina storagearray.Thisfeatureisdesignedasa system managementtoolfor taskssuchasrelocatingdatatootherdrives for hardwareupgrades orperformancemanagement, databackup, or restoring FlashCopylogicaldrive data.

You submitVolumeCopyrequests byspecifyingtwocompatible drives. One drive isdesignatedastheSource andtheother astheTarget. The

Note: ThetermsVolumeCopyandLogicalDriveCopyareused interchangeablythroughoutthisdocument,theStorageManager Clientprograminterface,andtheonlinehelp.

PartitionExpansion

You canusethePartitionExpansionfeaturetopresentallof thedefined logical drivesina storagesubsystemtoa SAN,throughseveral different partitions.Youcandothisbymappingeach logicaldrive toaLUN(0 -31) ineachof thedefinedpartitions.Alogicaldrive canbemapped toonlyone partition atatime. Inastoragepartition, themappedlogicaldrivesare accessibleonly tothehostserverorserverswhosehost busadapterhost ports aredefinedinthatstoragepartition.ThisfeatureenablestheDS3000 storagesubsystemtoactasamultiplevirtualstoragesubsystemto the host server.

PartitionExpansionalsoenables multiplehoststhatusedifferentoperating systems, withtheirownuniquediskstoragesubsystemsettings,to connect to thesameDS3000storagesubsystematthesametime. Thisisknownas a heterogeneoushost environment.

TheStorage Managersoftwareprovidesthefollowingtwomethodsfor managing storagesubsystems:

v Thehost-agent(in-band)management method(DS3300 andDS3400 only) v Thedirect(out-of-bandorEthernet)managementmethod

If youestablishmanagementconnectionsfrommultiplemanagementstationsor hoststo thesameDS3000storagesubsystem,itisbestpractice tohave onlyone active managementconnectionto theDS3000 storagesubsystemata time, even thougheight simultaneousactivemanagementsessionsaresupportedina DS3000 storagesubsystem.

(23)

Host-agent (in-band) management method (not supported for the

DS3200)

When youareusingthehost-agent(in-band)management method, youmanage thestoragesubsystemsthroughtheI/Opathtothehost.Themanagement informationcan eitherbeprocessedinthehostor bepassedto themanagement station throughthenetworkconnection,asshowninFigure1.

Note: Asof thedateofthis document,theDS3200does notsupportin-band management.

Managingstoragesubsystemsthroughthehost-agenthasthefollowing advantages:

v Youdonothavetoconnect Ethernetcables tothecontrollers.

v

YoudonotneedaDynamicHostConfigurationProtocol/BootstrapProtocol (DHCP/BOOTP)serverto connectthestoragesubsystemstothenetwork.

v Youdonothavetoperformthecontrollernetwork configurationtasksthatare describedinChapter2,“Preparingfor installation,”onpage21.

v Youmust specifyonly ahostname orIPaddressforthehostinstead offor the individualcontrollersinastoragesubsystem.Storagesubsystemsthatare attachedto thehostareautomatically discovered,if thehost-agentservice is installedandrunning.

Managingstoragesubsystemsthroughthehost-agenthasthefollowing disadvantages:

v

Thehost-agentrequiresa speciallogical drive, calledanaccesslogicaldrive,to communicatewiththecontrollersinthestoragesubsystem. Therefore, youare limitedto configuringonefewerlogical drivethanthemaximumnumberthatis allowedbytheoperating systemandthehostadapterthatyouareusing.

Required host-agent (in-band) management activities

Toestablishhost-agent(in-band)managementconnections,completethefollowing generaltasks:

1. MaketheI/OconnectionsbetweentheDS3000storagesubsystemandthehost server.

2. InstallTCP/IPonthehostserverandestablisha hostIPaddress.For instructionsfor host-managedsystems,see“Overview ofnetwork installation tasks”onpage23.

3. Install thehost busadapterdevice driver,SMclient,RDAC(MPIO forWindows, LinuxMPPfor Linux),andSMagentonthehostserver.

4. MakesurethattheStorageManagerAgent Servicestartssuccessfully:

For Windows:

a. Click Start→Settings→ ControlPanel→AdministrativeTools→Services.

TheServices windowopens.

b. LocatetheIBMSystemStorageDS3000StorageManager2Agentand makesurethatthestatusisStarted.

For Linux: Type ps-elf | grep SMagent and makesure thatthe Javalistening service isrunning.

5. OpentheStorageManagerEnterpriseManagement windowandaddtheIP address ofthehostservertothemanagementdomain.AllDS3000devicesthat arerecognizedbythehostserveraredisplayedintheEnterpriseManagement window.

(25)

Direct-management (out-of-band) method

When youusethedirect-management(out-of-band)method,youmanagestorage subsystemsdirectly overthenetworkthroughaTCP/IPEthernetconnection toeach controller.TomanagethestoragesubsystemthroughtheEthernetconnections,you must definetheIPaddressandhost namefor eachcontroller.Eachofthestorage subsystemcontrollersmustbeconnected,throughacablethatisconnectedtothe RJ-45connector,to anEthernetnetwork,asshown inFigure2.

Thefollowingillustration showsasystem inwhich storagesubsystemsare managed byusingthedirect-management(out-of-band)method.

Managingstoragesubsystemsbyusingthedirect-management(out-of-band) methodhasthefollowingadvantages:

v TheEthernetconnectionsto thecontrollersenableyouto managestorage subsystemsthatareconnectedto ahost runningany oftheoperatingsystems thatStorageManagersupports throughanSMclientmanagement station.

v Youdonotneedanaccesslogicaldrive tocommunicatewiththecontrollers. You canconfigurethemaximumnumberoflogical drivesthataresupportedbythe operatingsystem andthehost busadapterthatyou areusing.

v Youcanmanageandtroubleshoot thestoragesubsystemwhenthereare problemswiththeFibreChannel,InternetSCSI(iSCSI), orSASlinks.

Managingstoragesubsystemsbyusingthedirect-management(out-of-band) methodhasthefollowingdisadvantages:

v Ina dual-controllerstoragesubsystemconfiguration,youneedtwoEthernet cablesto connectthestoragesubsystemcontrollersto anetwork.

v Whenyouadddevices,youmustspecifyanIPaddress orhostname foreach controller.
