Diane Gaudon, FCPA, FCGA specializes in Goods and Services Tax (GST), Harmonized Sales Tax (HST), Quebec Sales Tax (QST) and provincial sales tax training and consultation for businesses of all sizes. Over the past 34 years as a professional accountant, she has gained extensive accounting and taxation expertise spanning many industries. For 20 years, Diane has been advising and training both Canadian and foreign companies on federal and provincial sales tax matters. Diane was also on the Ontario HST Implementation Committee. She is a very popular speaker who frequently presents commodity tax related material to numerous professional organizations, including CPA Ontario and Canada. Debbie is a tax and estate planning lawyer. She is Executive Director, Tax & Estate Planning with CIBC Private Wealth Management. She writes and consults on a variety of personal and small business tax issues on behalf of CIBC’s clients. She was previously General Tax Counsel to CIBC, where she worked extensively on CIBC’s wealth management offerings. Debbie is currently Chair of the Investment Fund Institute of Canada’s Taxation Working Group and works with the Investment Industry Association of Canada on tax matters concerning the investment industry. (7) SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT CREDIT (SRED) ROBERT (ROB) MOORE EDE PENG. MBA. Rob has a degree in Mechanical Engineering and a Masters of Business Administration with majors in Finance and Strategy.  His career began designing robotic assembly systems for a major North American automaker before moving into a variety of different functions.  He eventually landed in a Tax role managing Property Taxes and formulating the Scientific Research and Experimental Development (SR&ED) claim.  Rob then moved to Magna International to set up similar capabilities in a newly crafted team.  Rob continues to expand his areas of expertise with work in Abandoned and Unclaimed Property and Government Incentives being added to his responsibilities. In his career, Rob has been responsible for submitting over a billion dollars’ worth of SR&ED projects, including submission in other countries, the vast majority of which were accepted as filed or approved upon review.  While Rob’s technical background and financial capabilities were important underpinnings, it has been his ability to describe the projects within the SR&ED context that has been the key to his success in this field.  Rob welcomes the opportunity to share some of that experience with SAAC today.. (8) DECEASED TAXPAYERS AND THEIR ESTATE MANU KAKKAR CPA, CA, CGA, TEP, MTAX. Manu has more than 18 years of experience in taxation in both domestic and international personal and corporate taxation as well as expert witness reports and testimony. Manu runs his own independent tax practice with an office in Montreal and serves a diverse client base. Manu’s firm acts as tax counsel to more than 100 professional firms in Canada and the U.S. Manu is an award winning and prolific tax writer. His Master of Taxation thesis on butterfly reorganizations won two awards and was published in the Canadian Tax Journal. Manu has published and presented more than 200 tax articles and presentations since 2001 across Canada. He is an authority in taxation as his name has been cited over 36 times in the Income Tax Act. Manu has taught tax at Chartered Professional Accountants, the Canadian Tax Foundation, the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners, Certified General Accountants and various provincial accounting bodies across Canada.. 8. (9) RECENT DEVELOPMENT IN TAX HENRY SHEW. CPA, CA, TEP, CA, MACC. Henry Shew is a senior tax manager at Cadesky and Associates LLP, based out of Toronto. Henry specializes in domestic and international tax, with a focus on planning for high-net worth individuals, immigration/ emigration, reorganizations, mergers and estate planning. Henry has written numerous professional papers for the Canadian Tax Foundation and has spoken at the Ontario Tax Conference.. Henry has been involved with STEP Canada (Society of Trusts and Practitioners) and is currently serving as a member of the Student Liaison Committee. Henry is a tutorial leader for the CPA In-depth Tax Course and Henry is a member of the Canadian Tax Foundation Toronto Young Practitioners Steering Committee. SAAC is a registered not-for-profit professional organization composed of 300 life members and five honorary members. Our members are mostly CPA’s and a large number of them also hold membership with foreign accounting bodies such as the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (UK), Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (UK), and the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Sri Lanka. Our vision is to consolidate all the accountants who have their roots in Sri Lanka to come under one banner and promote fellowship nationally and internationally. Our mission is to provide an equitable forum for transmission of ideas aimed at enhancing the knowledge of members, professional development activities, job opportunities, and networking for social interaction between members and the community we serve. To support our vision and mission, the following objectives have been formulated: Function as the voice of all the accountants and accounting students, who are Sri Lankan by birth or descent. Assist members in expanding their knowledge of accounting and related issues such as taxation, auditing, corporate finance, capital investments and markets by holding regular seminars; share resources and exchange ideas with business associations. Provision of ‘soft skills’, that enhance an individual’s interactions, job performance and career prospects. Provide mentoring and referral services to new arrivals of Sri Lankan accountants especially in the areas of Canadian accreditation as well as workplace customs and practices that may be different in Canada than their homeland. Continuous improvement to our website for social networking thus facilitating timely feedback. Encourage members to post on our website, job opportunities that are available at their workplace. Actively explore opportunities to serve the broader Canadian community by volunteering to help the needy.
