Welcome to the Mount’s Remote Access service.

The following documentation is intended to assist first time or active users with connecting, authenticating and properly logging out of Remote Access. This documentation is not intended to assist users with software application use or general operating system issues.

The Mount’s Remote Access utilizes Windows 2000 Terminal Services to provide a windows desktop environment for access to certain software applications. This is different from your PC desktop at the Mount. Windows 2000 menus and commands may differ from your Windows XP environment in your office. The Remote desktop has also been secured for your protection and thus some operating system features are unavailable or “grayed out”.

It is important to differentiate accessing the remote system with accessing (or “POP”ing) your email account off campus. Remote email sets up an external email software package with settings to download your email messages, whereas the remote access system provides a desktop environment running at the Mount with a GroupWise icon. With remote access, your email never actually leaves the Mount.

Having a Novell network account does not necessarily mean you can use remote access. The remote access server requires an additional Windows User account and password which can be set to match or synchronize with Novell. If you do not currently have a remote access account, contact the IT&S help desk for information on how to obtain one.

The following steps outline how to configure your Internet Explorer browser to use the remote

access system:

Clients using Microsoft Internet Explorer (IE) must use version 4 or higher. To check your IE version, open the browser, and then click Help, About Internet Explorer.

You will then see a window that shows you your browser’s version information

You can see where it indicates that (in this example) version 8 is installed. If yours

indicates anything earlier than version 4.0, you will need to update your internet browser before continuing.

Click the “OK” button to exit this screen.

Assuming you have version 4 or above, you can continue…

Launch Internet Explorer and go to the following website:

http://www.msvu.ca/remoteaccess

You should see the following Remote Access page:

If the above page does not appear, or you get an error such as “page cannot be displayed”, re-boot

your PC and try again. If you still have difficulty connecting to the page, contact the IT&S help desk.

At the Remote Access page, you are presented with a choice to access the system with or without

“file transfer”. The file transfer feature allows you to copy files from the remote server at the Mount to a drive on your local PC. This feature has limited connection licenses available and should be used ONLY if required. For most situations such as checking email, or editing documents located at the Mount, you will only need to access the “desktop” feature. Contact the IT&S help desk for more information about the differences between desktop and desktop with file transfer.

If this is your first time to the remote access site, your browser will require connection software in order to access the system. The software for “desktop” is different than the software for “desktop with file transfer”.

DESKTOP:

The following connection page will appear if you select the “desktop” option:

Note the yellow add-on alert (circled in red above). IE is asking permission to install an “active x”

software component. This comes from an MSVU server and is secure. Right-Click anywhere on the

yellow bar and select “run active X control”.

Important Note: As the “desktop” connection page loads, your browser will automatically attempt to download the “active X” control from the Mount server.

The Active X control is a small, required program which facilitates access to the system. It is approximately 1.5Mb in size and, depending on internet speed, may take some time to download.

Unfortunately there is no progress bar to indicate how long the download will take. This process only has to happen once. Be patient. If after 3 or 4 minutes the login screen does not appear, re- boot your PC and try the process again. If the login screen still does not appear, contact the IT&S help desk for assistance.

Depending on your Internet security settings, you may receive the following or similar security warning:

Click “Yes” to install and run the trusted control software. If your security setting will not allow the control to install, see the following documentation on adjusting your security settings for Internet Explorer:

Once the ActiveX control is installed, select the desired screen resolution (“Full Screen” is

suggested) and click the connect button. Remember you may have to wait up to a few minutes the first time in for the ActiveX control to install which then activates the “Connect” button. Select YES to any other security warnings you are presented with.

You will be presented with a Novell login prompt. Enter your valid Novell campus credentials to

continue to the remote system.

DESKTOP with FILE TRANSFER:

The following connection page will appear if you select the “desktop with file transfer” option:

Enter your valid Mount Novell User ID and password. If the Domain field is blank, type MSVU.

Select a window size and click the Log In button.

If you have difficulty logging past this page (i.e. you receive a message indicating incorrect

credentials), you may need to come to campus to obtain valid credentials. Contact the IT&S help

desk for further directions.

Once valid credentials are entered, you will be presented with the NFuse Application portal screen as shown:

In order to proceed beyond this point, the Citrix ICA client software must be installed. This is a one-time per PC process. If you have not installed the Citrix software, see the following document for assistance:

Once the Citrix client is installed, click the Desktop icon to continue to the Novell Login screen.

Once you have the appropriate connection software installed and you are connected to the system with the desired screen size, you should then see the following Novell login window:

Enter your current Mount (Novell) user ID and password and click OK.

Note: If your password does not work or you are prompted to enter a second username and password, check to ensure your CAPS LOCK key is off and try again. If the login box returns, see the following document for tips on troubleshooting password problems:

If you still cannot authenticate, contact the IT&S help desk for assistance.

This desktop is a common, secured, Windows 2000 environment containing a set of basic

applications (GroupWise, Word, Excel, etc.) run from a server located in the EMF machine room at the Mount.

Because of licensing restrictions, this environment does not contain all software applications owned

and licensed by the Mount.

To properly log off and close your Remote Access session, go to the Start Menu on your remote session taskbar and click Settings, Windows Security as follows:

Important Note: Do not simply close your browser window as this leaves your session

running on the Mount server. This poses security risks and consumes valuable system

resources.

On the network security dialog window, click the Logout button to end your session.

You will then be prompted with the following confirmation box:

Click the OK button to confirm you wish to logout.

The system will then return you to the “desktop” or “desktop with file transfer” connection

screen depending on how you connected. You can then safely close your browser.
