What is it
FORMS OF DANCE
People have been dancing to express themselves since the dawn of time, and from those earliest gatherings spring the many forms of dance we know today. Each dance forms has its own style, but all of them are united by their common goal of artistic expression and the celebration of the human body. To fully comprehend the powerful appeal of dance, and the reasons for its growth as a cultural activity in modern society, it is helpful to understand the nature of dance itself. The following are the different forms of dances, each with a unique character:
1. BALLET- The highly disciplined and codifies stage art of ballet is based on a centuries- old tradition of movement
skills. It has repertoire today that is drawn for classical performance side by side with the most contemporary themes and choreographic approaches. It is taught slowly and carefully to develop core strength, flexibility and coordination.
Ballet originated in the 15th century, first in Italy and then in France. Over the centuries, ballet has influenced many other styles of dance and become a fine art form in its own right.
• Classical: This form reached its peak in 19th-century France and Russia. It is often story-driven and orchestrated ("The Nutcracker" is a great example), with fantastical sets and costumes. The movement emphasizes pointe work (dancing on toes), graceful expressions, and symmetry among dancers.
• Neoclassical: This is an evolution of classical ballet, which emerged in the early-to-mid 20th century. Movements are faster and more urgent, with less emphasis on symmetry, and simple sets and costumes. The plot is often nonexistent. Orchestras, bands, or soloists may accompany the dancers.
7 2. MODERN DANCE- Often referred to as
“contemporary dance”, is a highly individualistic and diverse form of artistic expression which began as a rejection of what its advocates condemned as the formalism and sterility of traditional ballet. It focuses on the concepts of torso contract and release, floor work, fall and recovery, and improvisation. It is often performed barefoot and with non- traditional costuming. Today, it still places emphasis on the artistic expression.
Modern dance is a dance style that
rejects many of the strict rules of classical ballet, focusing instead on the expression of inner feelings. It emerged in Europe and the U.S. in the early 20th century as a rebellion against classical ballet, emphasizing creativity in choreography and performance.
3. JAZZ- combines all dance styles in a high energetic dance that is without conventional boundaries. It has been influenced by ballet, modern, tap, hip- hop, African dance and many more styles. Jazz is most often accompanied by upbeat, currently popular songs. Jazz shoes typically have a leather split sole which offers the dancers foot more freedom to bend and move. Due to the upbeat music, dramatic themes and cool choreography, it isn’t hard to see why this is the most popular dance style.
Jazz is a lively dance style that
relies heavily on originality and improvisation. This style often uses bold, dramatic body movements, including body isolations and contractions. Jazz dance has its roots in African traditions kept alive by slaves brought to the U.S. Over time, this evolved into a style of street dance that soon moved into the jazz clubs of the early 20th century.
8 4. HIP HOP DANCE- It is an edgy, raw and
intense urban dance style also known as Street Dance. This dance is related to Hip Hop Music, includes break dancing, locking, crumping, popping, tutting and more. It is one of the hardest dance forms to master. It appears easy but requires a strong, quick, technically trained body. What sets Hip Hop apart from most dance genres is that its original street dance was a freestyle in nature and did not follow a predefined choreography.
Another descendant of jazz dance, hip-hop emerged from the streets of New York in the 1970s in the city's African- American and Puerto Rican communities at the same time as rap and DJing. Breakdancing—with its popping, locking, and athletic floor movements—is perhaps the earliest form of hip-hop dance. Often, "crews" of teams of dancers would hold competitions to see which group had bragging rights as the best.
As rap music flourished and diversified, different styles of hip-hop dancing emerged. Krumping and clowning took the physical exuberance of breakdancing and added narrative and comic expression in the '90s. In the 2000s, jerkin' and juking became popular; both of these take the pop-lock movement of classic breakdancing and add wild fashions.
5. MUSICAL STAGE DANCE- This hybrid form, found on the Broadway stage, in movies, or on television, usually combines elements of modern jazz, ballet, tap, and event ethnic dance. It tends to be a bright and highly polished form of glamorous entertainment, visually pleasing to a broad audience.
9 6. BALLRROM DANCE- The most widely found of participating dance. It ranges from the familiar social dances which were popular in past decades, such as the Foxtrot, Waltz, Tango, Rumba, or the Latin- American steps to the pulsating and physically exciting rock- and-roll or discotheque dances. Ballroom dance is also known as “Social Dance” because it encourages social interaction between dance partners. Ballroom dancing continues to be a main social event for seniors and is growing as a fashionable pastime for middle-aged and younger men and women as well.
7. ETHNIC DANCE- This refers to the type of dance performed by ethnic groups- usually of a highly traditional nature, and often linked directly to religious practices and social customs.
Ethnic dance is any dance form which can be identified as origination with an ethnic culture and expressing the movements aesthetics of that culture. The primary criteria is simply identification with an ethnic culture origin.
8. FOLK DANCES- They are danced by common people dominated by inherited tradition, regardless of whether they are danced by any sort of aristocracy.
Folk Dance are a celebration of daily life, health, peace, war, harvest times and other aspects of life. According to the National Commission for Culture and the Arts, Philippine folk dances imitate nature and life because they are rituals for social and spiritual expression.
10 9. ALLIED MOVEMENT FORMS-
This natural and expressive movement forms is a healthful and harmonious blend of dance, martial, and healing arts the encourage students to let their bodies guide their movements.
10. ZUMBA- it is an aerobic fitness dance workout which is based on Latin dance movements and rhythms, but use many styles from around the country. The music is invigorating, and movements are adaptable to any fitness level. The fitness craze known as Zumba is said to have started as a mistake by Colombian fitness trainer Alberto “Beto” Perez. In the Spanish language, the word Zumba means, “buzz like a bee and move fast”.
Zumba is a total body exercise- a good, high- energy aerobic workout. It is also a good core strengthening and flexibilitygains because there are lots of hip and midsection movements.
11. CLASSICAL DANCE-
A performance dance that has a tradition, is taught and maintained through the generations. It is generally acknowledged that for something to be considered classical, it must have the following criteria: it must have great age;
it has the ability to span different ethnic groups; and it must have cultural connotation. Classical dance is a conventional dance revealing the emotions through poetry or dance drama. This form is portrayed by poise, dignity and precision of movement, and by elaborate formal gestures, steps, and
11
poses. Classical dance is performed in theaters either in group or solo and its accompanied by musical instruments with beautiful costume. It conveys a story or theme through a musical composition written or used for this dance form. Classical dance require composure but strong attitude. It bring calmness, harmony in life and at the same time make our body strong, active and in shape.
12. TAP DANCE- Like jazz dancing, tap evolved from the African dance traditions preserved by slaves in the U.S. In this exciting dance form, dancers wear special shoes equipped with metal taps. Tap dancers use their feet like drums to
create rhythmic patterns and timely beats.
Music is rarely used.
After the Civil War, tap evolved into a popular form of entertainment on the Vaudeville circuit, and later a staple of early Hollywood musicals. Some of the most notable masters of tap include Bill
"Bojangles" Robinson, Gregory Hines, and Savion Glover.
