Software Services Project Manager

Reference Number 047/13 Introduction

1. You will be responsible for both the Software Services and Learning & Teaching team and the delivery teams to ensure that customers are led through their transition to a hosted Learning & Teaching service based on Moodle ™, whether standard or bespoke.

2. The University is a federation of separately incorporated, self-governing, directly-funded Colleges together with a range of central academic activities.

3. You will be employed within the central University – a separate legal body and employer from the colleges of the University, each of which is an employer in their own right.

The Post, Duties and Person Specification

5. A detailed description of the duties and responsibilities of the post is provided by the enclosed job specification on page 3 of this document, which includes a person specification detailing the key skills and personal qualities required of the postholder.

Terms and Conditions of Service

6. The appointment will be made at an appropriate point on the Level 08 scale for Administration, Management and Professional Staff, currently from £39,516 to £46,741 per annum inclusive of £2,134 per annum LondonWeighting pro rata.

7. The post is full-time and the normal hours of work are 35 per week.

8. The appropriate occupational pension scheme is the Universities Superannuation Scheme. If you are eligible to join the Universities Superannuation Scheme you will automatically be included in Salary Sacrifice for USS Pension (SSUP). For more details on that provision please see the last page of our Terms and Conditions document (see paragraph 11).

9. The annual leave entitlement is six working weeks (30 working days) in addition to Public Holidays and such days as the central University offices are closed for certain discretionary days at Christmas and Easter.

10. The appointment will be subject to the Terms and Conditions of Service for Administration,

Management and Professional Staff and other regulations relating to employment laid down in the Financial Regulations and elsewhere; these conditions and regulations may be amended from time to time. Job Title Software Services Project Manager

Job Summary To support the Software Services and Learning & Teaching team and the delivery teams to ensure that customers are led through their transition to a hosted Learning & Teaching service based on Moodle ™, whether standard or bespoke.

1. Working with the Head of Software Services to coordinate multiple simultaneous projects according to agreed priorities.

2. Implementing a consistent approach to project management, developing reusable templates and resources to streamline future projects.

3. Developing and sharing project plans with both customers and internal teams, ensuring visibility of wider project objectives.

4. Working with the Head of Software Services and the delivery teams to manage resourcing across multiple projects.

5. Engaging with the Learning Technology team to understand and develop customer requirements and ensure that these being delivered are the fundamental measure of project progress.

6. Contributing to the agreement of customer deliverables along with reporting and removing obstacles to their achievement.

7. Facilitating regular communication with the customer regarding progress and upcoming tasks.

8. Managing the successful working relationship where third parties (e.g. design agencies) are involved in the project.

JOB REQUIREMENTS / PERSON SPECIFICATION

EXPERIENCE Essential Desirable

Experience of IT project management in a multi-disciplinary

environment. 

Significant experience of working successfully within the educational

IT sector, including Virtual Learning Environments (VLEs). 

Experience of Agile Project management methodology. 

Experience of external service provision. 

TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE / SKILLS/ APTITUDE Essential Desirable

Proven experience of implementing ‘just enough’ formal project management to ensure delivery in a fast-moving, evolving business environment.

Experience of Software as a Service (SaaS) delivery. 

Excellent writing skills. 

Ability to work on own initiative, overcome barriers and move the project forward.

Experience of programme and project management in complex,

matrix-driven organisations. `

Experience of IT business development projects (technical IT

knowledge not required). 

EDUCATION / PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATION Essential Desirable

Holds a degree level qualification in Computer Science or equivalent vocational experience.

Evidence of on-going training and development. 

Prince 2 Foundation and/or Practitioner level. 

PERSONAL QUALITIES Essential Desirable

A pro-active, flexible and willing team-player. 

Ability to work well within a small professional team, as well as a

larger multi-disciplinary team of IT/IS professionals.  An open, enthusiastic, self-motivated individual, able to work

effectively with other functions and peers both within and external to the University.

Able to provide a supportive and helpful approach. 
