About Solarcentury

No substitute for experience

We are one of the world’s most trusted, respected and long-standing solar companies.

In fact, being founded in 1998, we have been around since the early days of the solar industry and have been part of the evolution that has made solar the attractive investment it is today. We’ve put solar on more types of sites than any other company in the industry, and have won multiple awards for product innovation.

What’s more, we’re in it for the long-haul. This isn’t just our business, it’s our mission. Our commitment to making solar accessible is deep-rooted and long-term, and our solidly-established business is growing steadily worldwide. So when you choose Solarcentury, you know you’re in very good hands.

Solarcentury Africa

In Africa we are located in South Africa, Togo/Ghana and Kenya with highly experienced solar experts and engineers available to you whenever you need. In Southern Africa, Solarcentury has a joint venture with Momentous Energy, a business specialising in large scale solar projects.

Our work

Fluor, Zenprop, Johannesburg

Size

88 kWp

Annual generation

154,000 kWh

CO2 savings per year

158,620 kg

Estimations only, correct at time of installation

The starting-point

Zenprop, one of the largest property investment and development companies in South Africa, was seeking new ways to cut its emissions and tackle the problem of rising energy costs. The newly constructed site located in Johannesburg had a suitable flat and pitched roof, as well as carport areas.

The solution

Solarcentury Africa was commissioned to install

88 kWp roof mounted solar panels on the Fluor building, an industrial engineering house owned by Zenprop in Woodmead, Johannesburg. In total, 66 kWp was installed on the rooftop as a combination of flat roof system and roof parallel systems, and a further 22 kWp were installed on the carport.

The result

Owned by Zenprop and operated by Solarcentury and Standard Electrical, Zenprop’s new solar system produces up to 40% of their energy demand at peak times. It also cuts their CO2 emissions and gives them control over

their energy consumption, as well as greater pricing certainty for the future.

The response

Elbert De Kok, Zenprop Property Holdings said,

“The solar panels are part of our aim to provide cost-effective, sustainable properties across South Africa. We are pleased that we can help our tenants cut carbon emissions as well as their energy bills. Making our buildings more sustainable demonstrates our commitment to creating a clean energy future. Using solar PV also gives us more control over our energy consumption, and helps to reduce the strain on South Africa’s already over-loaded power grid.”

Solar parks

Solarcentury is a leading solar parks developer and a highly experienced EPC contractor of ground-mounted PV installations. With over 100 MWp under our belt, we’re happy to call ourselves experts. We will take care of the whole project, from planning and construction, through to operation and maintenance.

Solar parks provide great value for businesses, investors and landowners. They are the quickest and the lowest impact route to creating new electricity capacity and giving you a stable price for your energy needs.

Solar parks provide large scale power to businesses and

residential areas. They also provide a great return for

landowners and investors.

A full flexible service

Development

With teams that include some of the most experienced solar designers and engineers around, we can make sure the planning’s watertight. Starting with a feasibility study and a detailed site planning appraisal, we take care of the whole process.

Engineering, procurement and construction

We offer a full range of performance-guaranteed solar technologies, thanks to our many world-class suppliers. We also bring our own IP products and mounting designs to the table. Since 1998 we’ve completed over 1,000 projects. So you can count on a safe and smooth-running construction, delivered on time and on budget.

Operation and maintenance

One of our beliefs is to be there at every step of the way. So once the solar park is up and running, we offer an operation and maintenance programme for an agreed period. This includes remote performance monitoring - monthly, semi-annual and annual preventative and corrective maintenance, regular reporting, and component warranty management.

Our work

Lexham, Norfolk , UK

Size

7.9 MWp

Annual generation

7,400 MWh

CO2 savings per year

4,200 tonnes

Estimations only, correct at time of installation

The starting-point

The 40 acre site southwest of the village of Tittleshall in Norfolk was selected for the 7.9 MW solar farm. The project was developed and constructed by Solarcentury and funded by Lightsource Renewable Energy Ltd.

The solution

The site is contained within existing field boundaries and is screened from view. It’s laid out in a way to ensure the solar panels are close to a suitable grid connection, and to minimise the visual impact for local homeowners.

The solar arrays were assembled on site, with small inverter cabins, access tracks and 2m security fencing and cameras.

The result

Over 32,000 solar panels will generate an estimated 7,400 MWh a year. This feeds directly into the National Grid, providing enough renewable energy to power 2,200 homes.

The response

Guy Beesley, Director of Development for Solarcentury: “This is a huge CO2 saving and

represents a significant step for the region towards meeting renewable targets.”

Isolated grid

Solar PV is a cost-effective power source that can operate alongside a public grid or a standby generator. We work with agricultural businesses such as tea producers, flower farmers, mining companies, water

pumping stations and remote communities and businesses that are dependent on diesel for energy – giving them a cheaper, greener and more reliable alternative.

As a highly-experienced developer and EPC contractor of both roof and ground-mounted PV installations, we can provide a complete turnkey service, or design and supply equipment for an installer to build. Our engineers have designed and delivered isolated grid services all over the world, from the UK to Africa to the South Pacific Islands. We can create a solar PV system that works for you – either stand-alone or paired with another form of power generation.

In areas where grid power is expensive, unreliable or

non-existent, solar can cut both the cost of electricity

and the dependence on standby generators.

Cut costs and your carbon footprint

The cost of solar PV has plummeted, but diesel costs have soared. For many countries the cost of diesel is typically US $1-1.5 per litre (R12.00-13.00). And fuel costs for diesel-generated power can be US $0.30-0.50 per kWh (R6.50).

In contrast, the cost of solar based on the levelised cost of energy (LCOE) is R0.50 per kWh; less than a tenth of diesel running costs.

What we offer

Our end-to-end service runs from design and engineering right through to distribution, installation and monitoring. Whether or not you have an existing power source, our experienced team will provide you with an isolated grid PV system that meets your needs and works with your local environment. Our team can also design a bespoke system according to specific grid conditions, with the option to then pack one or more containers with the solar PV, inverters, equipment and balance of system that a local installer requires to build the entire project.

Our work

Blackfriars, London, UK

Size

1.1 MWp

Annual generation

900,000 kWh

CO2 savings per year

513,000 kg

Estimations only, correct at time of installation

The new Blackfriars station spanning the River Thames is the world’s largest solar bridge, with Solarcentury installing a total of 4,400 solar panels.

The solar panels will generate an estimated 900,000 kWh of electricity every year, providing 50% of the station’s energy and reducing CO2

emissions by an estimated 513,000 kg per year.
