If so, consider continuing the immersion

experience at one of the middle school foreign

language immersion programs.

Immersion is a method of foreign language instruction in which the regular school curriculum is taught in another language. In middle school, a two-period block of instruction enables students to enhance their language development as well as complete the social studies courses in French and Spanish. One period of language instruction is offered to students continuing in Chinese.

Admission to the programs

Admission to the Foreign Language Immersion Programs is for incoming Grade 6 students who have completed the corresponding immersion program at the elementary level. Students who did not participate in the elementary program may test into immersion programs if there is space available. Contact the programs individually to find out about the application process and deadlines. To participate in the immersion lottery, parents must complete an immersion form for each program. MCPS provides transportation from central stops for the middle school language immersion students at Gaithersburg MS and Silver Spring International MS, from the areas that the programs serve. Transportation is not provided for language immersion students at Francis Scott Key MS, Herbert Hoover MS, or Westland MS who live outside the local school boundary. Beyond the accelerated mathematics, science and computer science courses, students have opportunities to work with scientists and mathematicians from government agencies. The program offers access to many academic competitions, such as the Math and Montgomery County Area Science Fair, and American Computer Science League. Students also conduct scientific field work at area creeks and at the Smithsonian’s Naturalist Center. Throughout all of their specialized course work, students work with an academic cohort in efforts to conduct independent inquiries using mathematics, computer science, and the scientific process to solve real-world problems.

Admission to the program

Admission to the Science, Mathematics, Computer Science Program is highly competitive. Criteria used to evaluate candidates include teacher recommendations, written statements from candidates, previous grades, course work, and test scores.

To apply to the Upcounty Center Program for the Highly Gifted at Roberto Clemente Middle School, students must live in one of the following clusters: Clarksburg, Damascus, Gaithersburg, Magruder, Northwest, Poolesville, Quince Orchard, Seneca Valley, or Watkins Mill.

To apply to the Takoma Park program, students must live in one of the following high school clusters: Bethesda-Chevy Chase, Churchill, the Downcounty Consortium, the Northeast Consortium, Walter Johnson, Richard Montgomery, Rockville, Sherwood, Whitman, or Wootton.

The program offers students intensive courses in writing and opportunities for written products to be published and broadcast through a variety of media, such as television, radio, and film. Students create position papers, plays, brochures, magazine articles, and research papers. The program also offers hands-on opportunities to work as a member of a productihands-on team in the program’s television studios. Students work in teams as performers, cinematographers, producers, directors, audio engineers, editors, and graphic

artists. Students will study the human experience through analysis of historical events, literature, and art. Additionally, students will learn to document the human experience through written and visual media.

Admission to the program

Argyle Magnet School for Digital Design and Development offers students in Grades 6, 7, and 8 a rigorous academic program, including accelerated mathematics, focused on the development and

application of information technology. Argyle students are engaged with technology tools in all classes

throughout the day. All Grade 6 and 7 students take a year-long comprehensive technology course. All Grade 8 students will enroll in a minimum of one technology elective. In addition, students may opt to take an additional elective courses, specializing in Web development, programming, digital art, or multimedia. Three of the Grade 8 technology electives will be high school level course work. Argyle students will have the unique opportunity to:

° explore a variety of technology tools;

° use technology tools to complete school

assignments;

° experience the competitive environment of team

problem solving; and

° work with peers to compete in state, national, and

corporate technology problem-solving challenges.
