Industrial Engineering

Industrial Engineering

An interdisciplinary field of activity, grown out of mechanical engineering, that is concerned with the

design, modelling, improvement and installation of integrated systems of people, material, information,

equipment and energy in the industrial plant. It draws upon specialized knowledge and skills in the

mathematical, physical and social sciences together with the principles and methods of engineering

analysis and design, to specify, predict and evaluate the results to be obtained from such systems.

There is a consensus about the definition of “Industrial Engineering” among the

appropriate institutions (e.g. CIRP, REFA, MTM).

Our proposal for aligned definitions:

Industrial Management

Industrial Management is a discipline derived from Industrial Engineering focusing on the

strategic

processes

. For this, especially

leadership skills

as well as

strategic planning methods

are

needed.

Advanced Industrial Management

Advanced Industrial Management is an interdisciplinary field of planning and improving complex

sociotechnical systems. It covers all fields of Industrial Engineering and Industrial Management that

draws upon

leadership skills

and

methodical expertise

. Beyond this,

digital planning tools

and

state-of-the-art methods

complete the Advanced Industrial Management.

Despite the high relevance of the field of the Industrial Management there is no

consensus about the definition of “Industrial Management” and “Advanced

Today´s deficits in existing Master Programs

Lack of methodical expertise

(e.g. MTM, work-sampling studies)

Studying at different universities in Europe is too difficult

(e.g. difficult approval procedure)

Necessary skills for management positions are missing

(e.g. lack of management skills)

Extra-occupational studies are not possible

(e.g. only full-time degree programs)

Industrial enterprises have requirements towards engineering graduates. Existing

Master programs have structural deficits which do not match them.

The Master of Advanced Industrial Management enables graduates to obtain needed

methodical expertise as well as leadership skills and competence in digital tools.

An aligned European curriculum synchronizes:

Content, credit points, duration of the courses

Studying at different universities in Europe is too difficult

Kernel courses (ca. 80%)

Courses are similar at all participating universities

across Europe.

Course contents are similar at all participating

universities across Europe.

To ensure the same quality level for the Master of

Advanced Industrial Management aligned Kernel

courses have to be created.

Kernel courses are the major part of all courses.

Individual courses

Students can easily study at different universities and all finished courses are

accepted at their home university.

A survey of leading industrial enterprises and organizations led to a broad agreement

to the Master of Advanced Industrial Management.

Findings of the survey

Requirements of the participants are:

Possibility to study at different universities across Europe with the same

quality level

Need for separate modules (e.g. Certified Process Manager) to qualify the

employees in special core fields

Conclusion

There is a need for an aligned definition of the terms “Industrial Management”

and “Advanced Industrial Management” for our organization

The deficits of existing master programs in engineering demand a new Master

of Advanced Industrial Management

A new Master program enables students to get into a management position

earlier

Leading industrial enterprises and organizations gave a broad agreement to the

developed curriculum
