First Circular
Dear colleagues,
The Host Committee is honoured to invite you all to the 12th Meeting of the European Association of Vertebrate Palaeontologists that will be held in Torino, northwest Italy, from June 24th to June 28th 2014. The venue of the Meeting will be the Museo Regionale di Scienze Naturali located in the heart of Torino, a city with a 2000 year long history and a rich culture intertwined with the life of a University founded in 1404.
Famous for its numerous museums, art galleries, theatres, palaces, churches, opera houses, piazzas and parks, Torino is well known for its baroque, rococo, neo-classical, and Art Nouveau
architecture. Much of the city's public squares, castles, gardens and elegant palazzi such as Palazzo Madama, were built in the 16th and 18th century, after the capital of the Duchy of Savoy was moved from Chambery to Torino. Later on, in 1861, Torino became the first capital city of Italy. These historical changes and the following industrial development are testified to by a number of museums, among which the Museo Egizio (one of the largest collections of Egyptian antiquities outside Egypt), the Museo del Risorgimento Italiano, the Museo Nazionale del Cinema and the Museo dell’Automobile are nationally renowned. We warmly suggest that you take advantage of your business trip to Torino by combining it with a few extra days of relaxation at the foot of the Alps.

Topics
This meeting, as with all the previous EAVP meetings, follows the general objectives of the
Association to promote and encourage communication and collaboration as well as to bring together the Vertebrate Palaeontology community of Europe through the organization of such a meeting in a different country every year. Delegates are invited to provide oral and poster presentations that cover all aspects of Vertebrate Palaeontology. We encourage the proposal of thematic sections, or symposia, such as the ones that have already been proposed:
SAPE session of fossil birds
A special session on fossil birds will be held during the meeting, under the patronage of the Society of Avian Paleontology and Evolution. Presentations (oral or posters) on all aspects of palaeornithology are welcome. For more details, please contact Marco Pavia (marco.pavia@unito.it)
Symposium on European Fossil Primates
This symposyum aims at offering an occasion to discuss the state of the art on primate
palaeontology (taxonomy, palaeobiogeography, phylogeny and palaeobiology), with particular emphasis on European fossil remains (including those of Homo). For further information, please contact David Alba (david.alba@icp.cat) and Lorenzo Rook (lorenzo.rook@unifi.it).

Field Trips
Field trip 1 - Sat June 28th: Morning: visit to Messinian sites exposed along the Tanaro River that yield abundant terrestrial vertebrates and are locally rich in well-preserved articulated skeletons of fishes, mostly belonging to the cyprinodontid Aphanius crassicaudus, in many cases exhibiting traces of the original pigmentation. Afternoon: Museo Eusebio in Alba, with collections of Miocene continental and marine vertebrates collected along the Tanaro River and in other localities nearby.
Field trip 2 - Sun 29th – Monday June 30th: this two day optional trip will be dedicated to the celebrated Eocene fossil-Lagerstätte of Monte Bolca. We will visit the site of La Pesciara di Bolca, the Museo dei Fossili di Bolca, and the Museo Civico di Storia Naturale di Verona, where a rich and impressive collection of fossils from Bolca is on display. The indicated price (approximate price! – details in the second circular) covers transportation by bus (Torino-Bolca-Verona-Torino), museum tickets, hotel room and dinner of Sunday. On the way back to Torino (afternoon of the second day), there is the possibility of a quick stop at Bergamo airport for those that prefer to leave Italy from Bergamo.
