Florida’s climate has been called the state’s most valuable natural resource. Most

of the state has a humid subtropical type of climate, but the southern tip of the

peninsula where Barry is located, has a more tropical climate.

In the wintertime southern Florida is one of the warmest places on the U.S.

mainland. Average January temperatures range from about 64° to 70°F (about 18°

to 21°C). Daytime temperatures in winter are generally in the lower 70°s F (20°s C)

at Miami and other southern coastal resorts.

Rainfall ranges from more than 60 in (1,500 mm) in the Everglades and the

northwest to about 38 in (about 970 mm) at Key West. Most rain falls in summer,

often include brief but heavy thundershowers. Snow rarely falls in the north and is

almost unknown in the south.
