Message from the Executive Director

The year is drawing to a close and now is the time to reflect on the highs and the lows of 2021 here at the Anchorage Senior Activity Center. As we continue to persevere through this pandemic it is good to look at all that we have accomplished and the exciting prospects on the horizon. From having to close the Center, to the exciting day we were finally able to open again, this year has been one for the books.

Many of you have seen the construction we are in the midst of due to the wonderful support of our members, board, and the Anchorage community who voted to pass our renovation bonds in 2020 and 2021. These renovations will continue into 2022 and I would like to provide you with an update.

Phase I is drawing to a close. The skylight is in place. The Gift Shop will be completed by Spring of 2022. There will be new displays, lighting, and many other features. We are excited to announce the restrooms by the Arctic Rose are completed and beautiful. Make sure to stop by and look at them on your next visit to the Center.

We are transitioning into Phase II of the renovation. This will include the billiards room, fitness area, and the restrooms by the membership office. The kitchen will also be part of this phase. Thank you for your understanding and support as we go through these changes together.

The Anchorage Senior Activity Center kitchen staff will continue to provide approximately 225 meals to our seniors and preschoolers. They will be doing so from an offsite location. The fitness team will

Medicare Advantage plans are now available in Alaska

The year 2022 will bring in a type of Medicare coverage for Alaskans that has not been seen in several years; Medicare Part C or Medicare Advantage plans also known as MA plans.

There are several types of MA plans, (perhaps you have seen the advertisements on TV), but the two plans being introduced this coming year are Medical Savings Account (MSA) plans. These plans do not include prescription drug coverage as some MA plans so if you need prescription drug

coverage, you would need to sign up for a Part D plan as well.

These plans do not require a network of healthcare providers so if current providers accept

Medicare and are willing to accept this plan, you can continue to see them. You will not need to get a referral to see a specialist just like in original Medicare.

This type of plan deposits a certain amount of money into a special savings account that is purposed for paying for medical expenses only. The plans can differ in the amount that is deposited. The two plans offered in Alaska by a company called Lasso provide a $2,000 deposit in the L Healthcare Growth (MSA) or a $3,000 deposit in the Lasso Healthcare Growth Plus (MSA). You, then use this money to pay for your Medicare-covered expenses throughout the year. If, at the end of the year, there is money left in your account it stays there and can be used the following year if the plan continues to be offered. The next year’s deposits will be added to it. There is no monthly premium charged to belong to the plan, but you will continue to pay the Medicare Part B premium. And if you do not have premium-free Part A, you will have to pay for that as well. You must first meet a high deductible prior to the plan beginning to cover your costs. The two plans available in Alaska in 2022 have a deductible of either $5,000 or $8,000.

Some MA plans offer additional benefits such as dental, vision, and hearing services and may charge an extra premium for these benefits. The Lasso plans offered in Alaska offer a benefit for hearing of a $0 co-pay for a hearing exam after you pay your deductible. No other extra benefits are provided in these plans.

This type of plan is generally good for those on Medicare who have a thorough understanding of their medical costs, are financially savvy, like to invest, and have a good understanding of the IRS rules regarding qualified medical expenses.

If you are interested in learning more about Medicare Savings Account plans, review the information found in your Medicare and You Handbook on page 67. They are usually mailed out in September of each year.

If you have not yet received your Medicare & You Handbook, you can call 1-800-Medicare and request one.

Wellness and Programs News

The holidays and shorter daylight tends to bring on depression and / or substance abuse in all ages.

If you are feeling overwhelmed, here are a few tips from www.healthinaging.org:

1. Get out and about—ask family or friends for help traveling to houses of worship, parties, or other events.

2. Volunteer—local schools, hospitals, the museum, nonprofits, and even your local church might have opportunities for you to help others and lift your own mood at the same time.

3. Drink Responsibly—It is recommended that you do not drink more than three drinks per day or a total of seven per week. One drink equals a 12 ounce beer, 5 ounces of wine, or 1.5 ounces of hard liquor.

4. Accept your feelings—You are not alone. The holidays bring on feelings of sadness for many people. Seek support, take care of yourself and even think of funny things you’ve done and have a laugh.

Depression is treatable. Talk to your doctor about your options and how you’re feeling.

Nutrition and Eye Health

Aging is known to have an effect on our eyes from cataracts, macular degenera!on, and glaucoma to

difficul!es reading. Are you providing your eyes with good nutri!on? According to the Academy of Nutri!on and Diete!cs, here are some foods that can keep your eyes healthy!

Kale: This leafy green is a source of lutein and zeaxanthin, which are related to vitamin A and beta-carotene, and may help protect eye !ssues from sunlight damage and reduce the risk of eye changes related to aging.

To absorb these nutrients the best, eat kale with a small amount of fat like olive oil.

Sweet Potatoes: Beta-carotene is converted to vitamin A in the body. Vitamin A helps to prevent dry eyes and night blindness. Beta-carotene gives vegetables their beau!ful orange color so go for carrots and squash too!

Vitamin C rich fruits and vegetables: Vitamin C is an an!oxidant that may help lower your risk of cataracts.

Citrus fruit, strawberries, peppers and broccoli are all good sources!

Omega 3 Fa!y Acids: Good news for Alaskans! Salmon, which is rich in omega 3 fa%y acids, may be beneficial for eye health. Choose fish two to three days per week for the benefits of this nutrient for your eyes.

The best way to get these nutrients is through the food we eat and not a pill! It is not always clear how we get nutri!onal benefits. Your best sources of vitamins, minerals and an!oxidants are from whole foods.

ASAC Fitness Department will be closed to all in person appointments and classes during December 24, 2021 – January 1, 2022. Some Zoom classes available online during those date.

The month of December has its own unique qualities and even challenges with the holiday hustle and bustle.

Really, the month of December is meant to fill us with joy and good feelings. Wrapping up this year with reflection on the good of 2021 and finding the simple things that bring us happiness can help us feel more at ease. We can do several things to reflect on our high notes of 2021 such as, calling a friend to chat about the fun times you had this year or good news received, via meditation and deep breathing, or simply grabbing a notebook and making a list. Deep breathing exercises can be considered self-care and aid in relaxation. Let us take some time from the busy schedules that fill this month to implement reflection, breathing techniques, and stretching to relax the body and mind. This can assist us in focusing on the present and enjoy the end of the year in brighter spirits.

No equipment needed for the below spinal health exercises. You can do these exercises seated: in the chair, in bed, or from the ground on your mat, or even standing. Complete each exercise every other day or every day. Start by doing this breathing pattern to relax the body 3 – 5 times. Take your time in-between breathes if you desire. Then move one to the stretching movements. Stretching should never feel painful or be forced.

Then repeat the breathing techniques 3 – 5 more times.

TipsYou want to maintain proper breathing when you exercise. Do not hold your breath. Elongate the spine while squeezing your tummy by pulling your belly button towards the spine and pulling your lower ribs towards each other. These exercises should always be performed safely and only if your doctor has given you approval.

Remember, you are working out at your own risk. If it hurts do not do it. Please reference pictures and descriptions. For any questions, feel free to give me a call or send an email to

[email protected] .

Deep Breathing (https://www.healthline.com/

health/copd/breathing-exercises#3-deep-breathing)

· Sit or stand with your elbows slightly back. This allows your chest to expand more fully.

· Relax the jaw

· Inhale deeply through your nose. ( 4 – 5 counts)

· Hold your breath. (4 – 5 counts)

· Release the air via a slow, deep exhale, through your nose, until you feel your inhaled air has been released. (5 – 6 counts)

· Repeat at the end of the stretches.

Fitness Continued on page 14 Torso Circles

· Sit up tall, brace core. Arms loose to your sides, palms on your lap. Bottom towards the front of the chair

· Keep your bottom seated fully and weighted equally in the chair the entire stretch

· Start to circle leading with your shoulders and good posture. Movement should come from the lower part of your trunk. Imagine scooping all numbers on the clock with your shoulders

· Circle both clockwise and counter clockwise. Circle each direction for 30 seconds up to two minutes

· Tip: Inhale as you are circling forward, exhale, as you are moving towards the back. Move 6 - 8 counts all the way around your circle (slower is key)

· Round the upper back, lead through your shoulder blades and tuck the chin, until you return to the start position.

· Continue for 30 seconds up to 2 minutes.

· TIP: 1. Try to make this movement feel as if you are rolling gently through each vertebra. 2. Inhale on the way down, exhale on the way back up.

HAMSTRING/ SAITIC NERVE STRETCH

· Sit up tall, brace core; lengthen the spine from the tailbone through the crown of the head.

· Keep your bottom seated fully and weighted equally in the chair the entire time.

· With your bottom towards the front of your chair, extend one leg forward, while keeping one leg at 90 degrees.

· The foot that is forward will remain in line with the hip, toes up towards the ceiling. Fig 1. Half way through the stretch take your foot laterally to allow for a variation fig 2.

· Hinge at the hips, leading with the chest, come down until you feel a stretch in the back of the leg.

· Hold for 30 seconds up to 2 minutes on each side.

· TIP: Less is more, hinge forward until you feel the stretch in the back of your leg.

Spinal Twist

·Sit up tall, brace core. Lengthen the spine from the tailbone through the crown of the head.

·Keep your bottom seated fully and weighted equally in the chair the entire stretch.

·With your bottom towards the front of your chair, twist at the lower part of your trunk, modified is fig 1. Advance is fig 2.

Why I Love the Anchorage Senior Activity Center

I have become more aware of all that is offered at the Anchorage Senior Activity Center these past two years by simply sending in my application to become a member of the Board of Directors. They welcomed me with open arms and have thoroughly blessed me by putting me to good work. I am grateful to be part of a very professional and active group that gets things done.

Here are just a couple of my personal reasons for loving ASAC.

CLASSES

I love the array of interests represented in the variety of classes offered at the

Center. My love of writing is appeased by attending the Wednesday, 10 a.m. sessions entitled

"Living History" -- it has helped my creativity as well as keeps my mind active -- not to mention sharing stories of life and other anecdotes of some "nonsense and wisdom" with new friends.

SOCIAL HOURS

I love the Social Hours offered to all seniors who wish to attend. Being part of a group of seniors and learning about their lives and how they are doing has become a regular thing on my calendar. Many of the faces become familiar and there are always new ones to get to know. It is a joy to have this fellowship and opportunity to meet new friends.

I am happy when I take part in our Center. I recommend it to others interested in making the Anchorage senior community strong and life-affirming.

What Are the Warning Signs of Hypothermia?

(Excerpt from https://www.nia.nih.gov/health/cold-weather-safety-older-adults)

Sometimes it is hard to tell if a person has hypothermia. Look for clues. Is the house very cold? Is the person not dressed for cold weather? Is the person speaking slower than normal and having trouble keeping his or her balance?

Watch for the signs of hypothermia in yourself, too. You might become confused if your body

temperature gets very low. Talk to your family and friends about the warning signs so they can look out for you.

Early signs of hypothermia:

·Cold feet and hands

·Puffy or swollen face

·Pale skin

·Shivering (in some cases the person with hypothermia does not shiver)

·Slower than normal speech or slurring words

·Acting sleepy

·Being angry or confused

Call 9-1-1 right away if you think someone has warning signs of hypothermia.

What to do after you call 9-1-1:

·Try to move the person to a warmer place.

·Do not rub the person's legs or arms.

·Do not try to warm the person in a bath.

·Do not use a heating pad.

Keep Warm Inside

Living in a cold house, apartment, or other building can cause hypothermia.

People who are sick may have special problems keeping warm. Do not let it get too cold inside and dress warmly. Even if you keep your temperature between 60°F and 65°F, your home or apartment may not be warm enough to keep you safe. This is a special problem if you live alone because there is no one else to feel the chilliness of the house or notice if you are having symptoms of

hypothermia.

Here are some tips for keeping warm while you're inside:

·Set your heat to at least 68–70°F. To save on heating bills, close off rooms you are not using.

Close the vents and shut the doors in these rooms, and keep the basement door closed. Place a rolled towel in front of all doors to keep out drafts.

·Make sure your house isn't losing heat through windows. Keep your blinds and curtains closed. If you have gaps around the windows, try using weather stripping or caulk to keep the cold air out.

·Dress warmly on cold days even if you are staying in the house. Throw a blanket over your legs. Wear socks and slippers.

·When you go to sleep, wear long underwear under your pajamas, and use extra covers. Wear a cap or hat.

·Make sure you eat enough food to keep up your weight. If you don't eat well, you might have less fat under your skin. Body fat helps you to stay warm.

·Drink alcohol moderately, if at all. Alcoholic drinks can make you lose body heat.

·Ask family or friends to check on you during cold weather. If a power outage leaves you without heat, try to stay with a relative or friend.
