Miata Winter Haiku ... 10 (back cover)

Happy spring to all.

I’m certainly glad to see the changes that point out our seasons are moving steadily forward. Some times in the slow, cold, and dreary days of winter it’s hard to tell that we’re spinning forward at all. Normally my diatribe would be about preparing your two-seater fun machine for the up coming seasons and the enjoyment of the road, but today I would rather be a bit more somber and touch on the events of the day.

Unfortunately as you watch the news of late it seems that rather than spinning forward, our world seems to be spinning out of control. Personally I’m not a doomsday believer and I’m also not always as certain about my religious or political belief as many of those around me are. What I do believe very strongly in is people, and their ability to overcome the erratic course of events which may or may not seem to make sense at the time. I believe in the human races ability to correct the wrongs, to stand up for the weak and protect the fallen. There is not much any one of us can do to personally help those who’s world is spiraling out of control, but if each of us did something it would make a noticeable difference.

So I would ask that you take a moment from your fast paced world to stop and reflect on the plight of others. I understand that many of you already do this in your daily routine through prayer or reflection but in this case my plea is that you spend a moment at a time outside that routine and come up with one thing that you personally can do to change some else’s situation for the better.

Whether it’s Japan, North Africa, the social discourse course in our own back- yards, or any of the items that fill our news take that moment and use it to ex- amine what you as an individual can do to do help ease a situation some- where. Then most importantly do it!

Donate some of your time. Donate some change if you can. Go out of your way to do an extra good deed. Don’t pick a side in a confrontation, search for a solution. I guess I’m a believer in the theory of paying it forward. If you can do this today, and again tomorrow and it gets repeated by enough peo- ple enough times we might be amazed that the difference it would make.

Thanks for reading.

REQUEST FROM THE WEBMASTER

Please send ALL event articles also to the webmaster, Don McCann for publishing on the website at the

same time that you sent them to be published in the newsletter. This keeps our information

consistent and up-to-date. Thanks!

Rock has been our house guest since January. We have enjoyed the visit, but all good things must come to an end.

To bring everyone up to date, last week we told Rock that we were plan- ning a weekend get-away. We were bombarded with “Are we going to Little Rock, AK or to New York City to see the Rockettes?” (neither) Instead, we headed north to our place in the Nicolet National Forest.

The Nicolet National Forest is a glacial area with lots of lakes, rivers and streams and big boulders. While there, we suggested that doing an ancestral search would be fun for Rock, and that there would still be time for other fun things. Pictures are attached of Rock sledding, hiking and being silly.

Some of Rock’s favorite things:

Foods: Rocky Road ice cream and rock oysters

Restaurants & Bars: Hard Rock Café and Rocky Rococos Sports: Rock climbing or skipping stones

Actor: Rocky (as in …”and Bullwinkle”) and actress Sharon Stone Favorite Rock Band: Rolling Stones

Favorite Song by Elvis: No Room to Rumba in a Sports Car To be continued...Rock's Roots

Press Release

Mazda MX-5 Reaches New Milestone with 900,000 units produced

-MX-5 Miata reaffirms its position as the most popular sports car ever made- IRVINE, Calif. (February 3, 2011) – The world’s best-selling two-seat roadster, the iconic Mazda MX-5 Miata, continues to set the bar even higher for the competi- tion today, reaching a new milestone of 900,000 units produced. Nearly 45 per- cent – more than 388,000 units – of those were sold in the United States since the car launched in 1989.

The MX-5 made its global debut at the 1989 Chicago Auto Show and has since

received several facelifts, seen many limited and special edition versions, been named “Car of the Year”

multiple times around the world and topped countless “Best Sports Car” lists. But its soul has always re- mained that of a pure sports car, dynamically engineered and tuned to produce driver happiness, whether on a short trip from point A to point B or on extensive S-curve searches. The Zoom-Zoom driving experience evoked by the MX-5 is not lost on consumers, and has always been within their reach with the roadster’s affordable pricing.

“As we head toward the next production milestone of one million units, Mazda is committed to further evolving the MX-5,” said Seita Kanai, Mazda Motor Corporation (MC) senior managing executive officer, research and development. “We will refine its fun-to-drive character as well as further enhance its envi- ronmental and safety capabilities. In the years ahead, we will continue to cherish the MX-5 alongside its loyal fan base as the symbol of the Mazda brand.”

The first-generation MX-5 Miata (1990-1997 model years) was equipped with a 1.6-liter, inline four-cylinder engine that produced 116 horsepower and 100 lb-ft of torque. A removable hardtop was optional and initial color choices were red, white and blue. The starting price was $14,000, and early production of the affordable, grin-inducing roadster could not meet the enthusiastic demand of consumers. A redesigned second-generation model was unveiled at the Tokyo Motor Show in 1997 (model years 1999-2005 – there was no 1998 model-year car) and the third generation model was introduced at the Geneva Interna- tional Motor Show in 2005 (model years 2006-present).

Currently equipped with an MZR-series 2.0-liter, inline four-cylinder engine, today’s MX-5 produces 167 horsepower (158 for automatic transmission) and delivers 140 lb-ft of torque. The soft-topped Sport model starts at $23,110 with top-level, Power Retractable Hard Top Grand Touring models starting at $28,550.

“Since Mazda launched the original MX-5, it has undergone two complete product redesigns and a se- ries of upgrades,” said Nobuhiro Yamamoto, MC program manager, MX-5. “Its enduring success is due to the strong support it enjoys from fans around the world, and I will strive to keep the MX-5’s spirit alive while evolving it into a car that will be loved by even more people.”

The 500,000th MX-5 Miata was produced in 1999 and sold in the United States. In 2000, Guinness World Records recognized the MX-5 as the world’s top-selling sports car, a distinction that has been further so- lidified with every 100,000 additional units built in 2002, 2005 and 2007. The 900,000th unit is a soft-top, six- speed manual-equipped Copper Red MX-5, and destined for Germany.

Event Recap

Wisconsin Dells Getaway

On February 5th we slowly made our way to a Bed & Breakfast called the White Rose in Wisconsin Dells. There were 7 couples…

Jane & Dennis Schmidt & Lynda & Tom Quella who made this possible. Bill & Carol Johns, Ginger & Brian Carney, Jim &

Joanne Tuckwood, Duane & Karen Berger & Lin & Ron Carlson.

It was such a relaxing weekend.

The house was so quaint & charming, every bedroom decorated different, it made you think you were back in time to the year 1905 when it was built. When we got there we sat and visited on the Veranda, it was so comfortable. The snacks were put out and we all just sat & talked. There was so much food! We then went to dinner at The Rivers Edge, they surprised us with placemats that had the clubs name on them & all seven couples names, they also had a TV there welcoming us to the Restaurant.

Everyone had a great time. When we got back to the house we all got comfortable and the girls sat in the dining room playing Apples to Apples. All of the guys sat next to the fireplace and just talked all night. The time went by so fast it was 12:00 and we all made our way to our rooms.

The next morning we all met for breakfast, and then off to get home to watch the Packer Game…Oh what a game it was!!!!!!!

We are looking forward to next year’s stay in the Dells!!!!

Un-Hibernating Your Miata

(from the BMC Website Tech Files, originally written by Joe Menigoz) Here's how Joe Menigoz advised us to get our Miatas

out of hibernation and up & running for the start of the driving season.

Getting Ready For Spring

Well it’s not spring yet as we all know but a few items still can be performed before the warm weather comes.

 Charge battery with low amp charges (2 amps).

 Check fluid levels, oil, brake and clutch

 Check for any leaking fluids (front and rear) and look for the source of the leaks.

 Check interior, trunk, and under hood for any unwanted "guests".

 Inspect tires.

The birds are coming back…

a taste of warm weather in the air…

Ladies & Gentlemen - Start Your Engines!

Before we turn that key and start your Miata for the first time after the long "hibernation" let's cover a few important points:

 Charge battery with low amp charges (2 amps).

 Give your insurance agent a call to reinstate your Miata coverage.

 Re-connect your battery.

 Remove any rodent prevention (steel wool, Irish Spring soap peelings, etc.); remember to remove anything from the tailpipe and air intake systems (from winterizing).

 Check fluid levels: engine oil, windshield washer, brake, and clutch.

 Secure convertible top clamps.

 Take it easy after start-up - your engine may exhibit HLA (Hydraulic Lash Adjuster) noise.

This should subside after a short time. This noise is very common after storage. Oil drains leak (out) of hydraulic lack adjusters on '90-'97 models. The '99-'03 models now have solid lash adjusters and should not have the start-up noise that is common with the earlier models.

 Do a walk-around and check all your lights:

head, brake, backup, side markers, turn signals, etc. Check the horn. Check your instrument gauges, etc. Remember - Safety First!

 Test your brakes. Slow stops to burn off any corrosion protection that was applied to brake rotors at the fall storage.

 Turn on your air conditioner. This is very important. By running your air conditioner the oil in the system lubricates the seals and prevents system leaks.

Spring is just around the corner which means Miata rides will be starting soon. Make sure your equipment is ready to go with these great CB Tips!

Tip #1: Reception Problems

If you use a magnetic base CB antenna on your trunk and find that you’re not getting good very reception, try this tip from one of our members. Our own Bill Johns was having this problem and he got this advice from a CB dealer.

To get better reception, create a better ground to you trunk lid. Using one of the trunk’s hinges, connect a wire to one of the bolts at either end of the hinge. Using braided copper wire and crimp on lugs to make a ground strap. Add a star washer at each end to

ensure you get a good connection. It just might make your next ride all that better.

Tip #2: What to Buy

It’s been said that many club members like the Cobra 75 WXST model. It’s a hand-held unit and a lot of the club members mount the connector just behind the driver seat by the console.

Editor’s Note: The “Cobra 75 WXST All-in-Handset Mobile 40-Channel CB Radio”

is available at Amazon.com for $96.13 (list price $159.99).

Visit us on the web: http://www.BadgerlandMiataClub.com Haiku according to Wikipedia:

Haiku is a form of Japanese poetry, consisting of 17 moras in three phrases of 5, 7 and 5 moras respectively.

In Japanese, haiku are traditionally printed in a single vertical line and tend to take aspects of the natural world as their subject matter, while haiku in English often appear in three lines to parallel the three phases of Japanese haiku and may deal with any subject matter. Previously called hokku, haiku was given its current name by the Japanese writer Masaoka Shiki at the end of the 19th century.

Where’s my Miata?

Ice pellets hit hard

upon my frozen driveway.

Miata sleeps snug.

I’m sick of this snow!

Dirty greyness sadly melts Into a mud pool.

Awaken now spring

I beg you to quickly come.

Winter, crush no more!

Finally, sunshine!

Open that barn door creaking:

Free our Miata!

Drive away happy.

Top down, sun shines in my face - Now reunited!
