One Team. One Heart. One Goal.

Guide
Spring is in the air and one of our favorite ―Rites of Spring‖ is the launch of another exciting season of Lady Lakers Softball! It is my pleasure to bring greetings to our loyal fans and to express our appreciation to our sponsors and benefactors on behalf of the Lake-Sumter Com-munity College family. I chose the word ―family‖ because here at LSCC we truly strive to de-velop relationships with our students that will assist them on their journey to find their futures. To this end, we have established a Service Excellence initiative with this goal: ―We inspire confidence through every interaction to empower lives and build futures by providing a caring and supportive learning environment‖.
Our student athletes thrive in this environment, under the mentoring of not just the coaches, but advisors and faculty as well. As a result, our teams excel not only on the field and the court but in the classroom and the community. In addition to the honors already mentioned by Coach Matulia, I also note with pride that many of our team members received leadership and service awards for their contributions to the college and the community.
Lake-Sumter Community College continues to be one of the leading colleges in the state and the nation. We were selected as being in the ―Top Ten Percent‖ of all U.S. community colleges by the Aspen Prize for Excellence; and we placed #5 for colleges of our size in the use of technology by the eRepublic Center for Digital Education. When our students complete their studies here they are ready to go anywhere, as evidenced by their high job placement rates and average GPA of 3.18 after transfer to the university system.
As we enter our 50th Anniversary year and begin the application process to initiate bachelor’s degree programs at LSCC, we are indeed ―appreciating the past while anticipating the future‖.
Thanks for your support and Go Lakers!
Beginning his 15th year as the Athletic Director, Mike Matulia has guided the LSCC Athletic Programs during the ―New Era‖ for Lake-Sumter Community College. During his tenure, Matulia has built the athletic teams, facilities and program into one of the best in the state. Matulia has served as the FCSAA State baseball chair, the Suncoast Conference Baseball Commissioner, the vice chair on the Lake County Children’s Services Council and currently the Chair-Elect with the FCSAA Council for Athletic Affairs.
This year the Lady Lakers will be led by first year coach, Greg Mooneyham. Greg has an excellent athletic background and the administrative experience to lead the 2012 squad. Dur-ing the 2010-2011 year, the LSCC athletic teams continued their success both on and off the field. The athletic program posted two student-athletes on the NJCAA Academic All-American Team, while nineteen received All-State Academic honors. Twenty six student-athletes received All-Conference Academic honors in their respective sports and eleven re-ceived All-Conference Team honors, while two baseball players were named to the All-State Team. All-Conference Team players in softball included: Kayla Chandler, Sarah Pettigrew, Danielle Wayt, and Brittany Wagner.
Coach Mooneyham is looking forward to the 2012 season and will have leadership from this year’s sophomore class, which in-cludes: Ashley Cumbie, Samantha Davis, Mandi Fraleigh, Shelbie Pope, Cassandra Ridge, Jordan Ridge, Hannah Sibley, Danielle Wilson; and transfer, Jessica Johnson.
―We look forward to seeing the Lakers compete, under Coach Mooneyham and look forward to great things this spring‖. Mr. Matulia devotes his time and energy to marketing and fundraising for the athletic program, watching his son’s play baseball, and spending more time with his wife, Betsy. Matulia resides in Eustis with wife Betsy and their youngest son, Jake (13); Matulia has two other sons: Matt and John; and his first granddaughter: Emma.
