About 2010
The Senators went 39-19 in their final 58 games to earn
a playoff spot for the first time since 2002. Three players (Stephen
Strasburg, Drew Storen, Danny Espinosa) started the season with
Harrisburg and eventually made their way to Washington making their
major league debuts. Last week, another former Senator (Michael
Martinez) made his major league debut with the Philadelphia Phillies.
Tonight’s Game
The Senators and the Bowie Baysox open the
2011 season tonight at Metro Bank Park. These two teams are the
minor league rendition of the Battle of the Beltway between the
Nationals and Orioles. The two teams first met in the season opener
back April 5, 2001 with the Sens winning 2-0. Subsequently, they’ve
met three times. Overall, the team has split their four season opening
games. Last year, Bowie won the season series winning 13 of the 17
games played between the two teams.
2010 Manager
Tony Beasley returns to managing after being the 3rd
base coach for the Pittsburgh Pirates the last three years. He last
managed the Altoona Curve in 2005. Overall in his five-year minor
league managerial career he is 372-258 and made the playoffs all five
years including winning the
Baseball America
manager of the year
award at two different levels.
Familiar Faces...
The Senators start the season with 15 players that
spent time in Harrisburg last season with one other player, Luis Atilano,
a former Senator that didn’t spend any time on the Island last season.
All told, 20 of the 24 active players on the roster were with the Nats
organization in 2010.
Prospects...
The Senators have six of the top 30 prospects according
to
Baseball America
on their opening day roster. They are C Derek
Norris (2), RHP Brad Peacock (10), 2B Steve Lombardozzi (13), 1B
Tyler Moore (24), RHP Ryan Tatusko (26), and RHP Hassan Pena
(30). Norris is listed among all of minor league baseball’s top 50
prospects according to Will Lingo and John Manuel.
Attendance Records
The Senators set several attendance records
in 2010. They set an all-time single season record drawing 294,325
fans. It was the first time the Sens had drawn over 290,000 fans in a
season. The top four single-game attendance records were all set last
season too. The Sens drew an all-time high 7,907 on 8/28 against
Trenton. They drew 7,887 for Stephen Strasburg’s Harrisburg debut on
4/16. On 5/2 against Altoona, Strasburg’s final Sens start, the team
drew 7,619.
