Kelly Ashton- Fussy and Fabulous:

Let the Fabric Work for You

January 20, 2021--9:30 a.m. on Zoom

Kelly Ashton loves making quilts. The creative process of block design, setting options, planning and sewing fulfill her love for quilting. Kelly’s midlife realization that she truly might not live long enough to use all of her fabric stash has led her on her quilting journey. Her designs range from quick and easy to challenging•. In this lecture Kelly will teach us how to use those special fabrics, large scale prints, strips, repetitive pattern and more, to create blocks with visual and textual depth. You will never look at fabric in the same way again. Note: Jan. 20th is Inauguration Day. The ceremony is scheduled, as of this writing, to start at noon so you can still make the meeting!

The Zoom meeting invitation will be emailed to members by January 18th

There will be a mandatory Board meeting on the 20th at 8:30 am. Please submit agenda items to Tricia Glaister [email protected].

Dear Quilters,

By the time you read this, the holidays will be over. I, myself, will be glad. It just wasn't the same without family. I'm sure a lot of you feel that same difference, perhaps for other reasons.

This new year brings us a new start, with a new hope. It won't change right away, but I am seeing a light at the end of the proverbial tunnel. It has a way to go until it’s really bright, but it’s a start. And I will take it.

I so look forward to our meetings and seeing you all in person! I am ever so grateful for our zoom meetings. Thank goodness for the

technology. And I am so grateful to Takako, Diane and Lucille for all that they have done in re adjusting our entire program schedule to fit zoom meetings. And without Evelyn, we wouldn't have the zoom

meetings. A thank you also goes out to Marlene, our newsletter editor. She is ever so willing to send out all the additional emails that are

necessary for our zooming. I don't know where, we as a guild, would be without all their time and efforts. I thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Now we just have to be patient a while longer. I am looking forward to in person gatherings!

I am just starting to feel that creative urge, which has been

conspicuously absent these last many months. We have a show coming up!!! I better get busy!

Take care of yourselves,

Tricia Glaister, NSQG President

PS Please begin to think of signing up for one of our many board positions as a number of terms will be up in March. The available positions will be posted in the next newsletter.

Love and Comfort Update

Needed: We are running low on fabric for quilt backs. If you have extra fabric in your stack, donations would be much appreciated. We need fabric pieces at least

38” square for each back.

Also needed: Members who will finish some of the many tops that that others have already created.

They are ready to go, bundled with backs and batting awaiting your machine quilting skills (from beginner to expert and everyone in between). Don’t forget to sign the backs with NSQG!

Contact Evelyn Burdick, [email protected], for drop off of fabric donations or pick up of tops to finish.

Consignment Items Wanted for The Wisconsin Museum of Quilts and Fiber Arts

More than 60% of the gift shop items at The Quilt Museum are handmade by artists, like you! Guests can find unique, high-quality, beautifully designed gifts not offered anywhere else.

The Museum is now welcoming submissions for new items from fiber artists who are interested in consigning their pieces in the WMQFA gift shop. We are looking for gift items that would retail in the $40 or less price range. If you are interested in submitting your pieces for consideration, send

information and images to [email protected].

Selvages for Free!

Does anyone want a small paper bag FULL of cut selvages for sewing projects?? If so let Linn Woodard ([email protected]) know. She’d love to move them from her sewing room to yours!

Mark your calendars for the 2021 Quilt Show!

Harvest of Quilts at the Ozaukee County Fairgrounds

October 15 & 16, 2021/Set up - Thursday, October 14

9:00am - 4:00pm

Quilt Show Update

We are sure that we are all happy to welcome the New Year! Here are a few ideas for 2021 Quilting Resolutions:

Resolution #1-Complete your UFO's. Visitors to our quilt show will be able to enjoy your efforts during this "opportunity" to spent time on your quilting. Personally, quilting has helped us to get through the challenges of 2020. Resolution #2-Sew two Quilt Stand "Frocks". Thank you, Sonja Pavlik for organizing the project.

Resolution #3-Spend time scanning your quilting books, Pinterest, magazines for ideas for Silent Auction ideas. Then make a few! Shout out to the Silent Auction Chairs (Diane Goldschmidt, Pat Goeden, & Tricia Glaister)

Resolution #4-Start designing and completing a Challenge Quilt entry. Marlene Deutsch and Cynthia Mohsenian have come up with a fun "Say Cheese!" theme.

Resolution #5-Stay healthy!!! Wear your masks and social distance. We will get through this.

We wish you all a Happy & Healthy New Year!

The Quilt Show Challenge for October 2021!!

Wisconsin has long been identified with cheese; in the words of a 2006 New York Times article, "Cheese is the state’s history, its pride, and its self-deprecating, sometimes goofy, cheesehead approach to life." Wisconsin has claimed the title of the largest cheese-producing state in the United States since 1910.

So when you “say cheese” you may think of having your picture taken, cheeseheads, our Dairy State, or maybe a cheesy movie or idea. Whatever “Say Cheese” says to you, the challenge for the 2021 quilt show is to showcase it in a quilt! Your quilt may be pieced or appliqued, finished or unfinished and can be a 12” square, at 18” equilateral triangle, or a circle with a 14” diameter. AND you must include some fabric of course!

If you have any questions, please contact Cynthia Mohsenian at [email protected] or Marlene Deutsch at [email protected]. For our talented guild members, this challenge will be a piece of….cheese!

HELP US FABRICATE 40 FANTASTIC FROCKS (SKIRTS)

When was the last time you wore a skirt? Maybe it’s been a while, but our quilt

stands need 40 of them! We would like to cover the base of the quilt stands with a tree skirt style covering that is made in fall colors. These will last us for years to come, add texture and color to our stands, and provide a measure of safety so people won’t trip over them.

They are very simple and quick to make:

1. Cut out two 30” circles. (I used a 15” string, pivoting out from the center of the fabric to make the circle)

2. Sew them right sides together, 3. Cut a slit from side to center,

4. Turn, turn in the raw edges and sew raw edges together and press. 5. Voila!

These are only lined - no batting or quilting stitches. How easy is that?

Make each one with one fabric or do patch work to make it fancy. I did some with wedges by cutting my pattern into 8ths and sewing the wedges together. We will pin the sides together so there is no need for zippers, buttons, or Velcro. Just have fun. There are no quilt police at this party, so let your imagination go. No skirt will be turned away. Let your kids make some too.

Any questions or to schedule drop offs contact Sonja Pavlik, 115 W Green Tree Rd, or
