I had everything to live for—a great husband, wonderful children, a successful business—but it seemed as if there was nothing that could save me from the road I was on. I was dead inside, waiting to die outside. I was giving in to the disease and giving up on life. Through ‘divine’ intervention, I found Schick Shadel Hospital, and knew it was the right place for me. My arrival at Schick was the end of my addiction and the beginning of my new life. ~ Former Patient, toronto, ontario

While playing football at the University of Texas, I was always training and preparing to win. Performance is everything in sports. I quickly discovered the same holds true in the world of business. When I found that drinking had started to affect my edge, my research led me to Schick Shadel Hospital. Not only did they take away my cravings for alcohol, they did it in just 10 days and I was able to conduct business from the privacy of my room. My life was uninterrupted—and improved—by the Schick Shadel treatment method.

Counter Conditioning

This treatment is the cornerstone of Schick Shadel Hospital’s treatment program. Because cravings often lead to relapses, Schick Shadel’s treatment program specializes in eliminating relapse-inducing cravings with counter conditioning therapy. Medical research has demonstrated that counter conditioning is highly effective in retraining the memories associated with the sight, smell, and taste of alcohol or drugs and significantly reduces the cravings for these substances.

Counter conditioning therapy is fast and effective. It allows patients to begin recovery without having to struggle against that intense and immediate craving to drink or use drugs. The typical treatment program, following a period of medical detox if needed, includes 10 days of inpatient medical treatment and two two-day reinforcement visits at 30 days and 90 days post-discharge. During the 10-day stay, patients receive alternate days of counter conditioning treatment, under medical supervision, and relaxing sleep therapy.

Treatment Overview

Minimal Sedation Interview

To better understand why a patient uses alcohol or drugs, we induce a drowsy state under the supervision of a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA). This relaxed state “opens the patient up” and helps expose some of the issues that underlie their alcohol or drug abuse. We seek to learn what triggers the abuse. What are the stress factors? Are they developing an aversion to the addictive substance? The goal of exploring a patient’s subconscious functioning is to craft a custom plan to treat their cravings. We repeat the sedations every other day and, based on what is revealed and the level of their progress, weave the information we learn into their counseling sessions and continuing care plan.

Hypnotherapy

For patients who have a strong equilibrium and resistance to nausea—such as pilots, fishermen, or people who work in high places, among others—hypnotherapy can be an effective tool in helping to eliminate the craving for alcohol, opiates, heroin, and other drugs. Overall, the goal is to enhance the aversion process.

It was hard to admit to my union representative

that I needed help. But once we started talking, I realized he was in my corner all the way. He made it clear that my technical skills, work ethic, and leadership abilities were valuable to the organization and worth saving. In no time at all, he was able to arrange with our insurance for me to take a two-week absence and a stay at Schick Shadel. It was completely confidential. Ten days later, I was back at work with a new and better life.

Substance Treatment Programs

Reinforcement Sessions at 30-Day and 90-Day Intervals

Patients return to Schick Shadel Hospital at 30 days and 90 days after the initial 10-day inpatient counter conditioning treatment for a two-day reinforcement session. During these follow-up sessions, the patient receives one counter conditioning treatment, one rehabilitation interview and his or her continuing care plan is updated. These reinforcement sessions have proven significant to continuing sobriety and a clean and sober lifestyle.

Schick Shadel’s treatment program offers medical care in an atmosphere of compassion, understanding, and acceptance. We address the medical causes of addiction because willpower, counseling, and social support alone aren’t always enough. Our treatment program recognizes that:

V Addiction is both physiological and psychological

V Genetic predisposition and repeated exposure to alcohol and drugs can lead to addiction

V Addiction is an illness that requires medical treatment

Our counter conditioning programs provide researched medical treatment in tandem with psychological counseling to address the physiological craving for alcohol and drugs. Cravings are banished and replaced with an aversion to these substances.

V Alcohol V Cocaine V Marijuana V Amphetamines V Opioids V Heroin (smoked/snorted)

I had reached a place in life where my greatest hope was not hurting anyone else when I ended up in a drunk-driving wreck. I believed that no treatment program would work for me or, that if it did work, life would be boring and not worth living without getting buzzed every night. When my best friend Fred, whom I considered to be the worst drunk I knew, told me he was going to go through aversion therapy in a 10-day program, I knew it was time to follow his example. I checked in for treatment and it gave me my life back. I thank Fred and SSH for giving me back my life.

FAQs

Schick Shadel Hospital claims a #1 Success Rate*

for alcohol abuse treatment. How do you back up

that statement?

We’re proud of our success in helping thousands of men and women, or approximately seven out of 10 former patients, recover from addiction and restart their lives. Our #1 Success Rate* claim is based on the verified findings of an independent survey of former patients compared to published success rates from verified, comparable studies of other medical institutions. Success is measured as total abstinence for one year based on a self-evaluation from the former patient.

Is the counter conditioning approach supported by research?

Absolutely. Counter conditioning has been studied and documented by medical and psychology researchers for more than 75 years. It has its origins in an organic brain process called “accidental aversion.” Consider an everyday example of this brain process: You love cherries, but one day you eat too many and become nauseated. From that moment forward, you no longer crave cherries. In fact, you are turned off by them entirely. This aversion may last a lifetime. Schick Shadel applies this natural process in an organized, scientific way, providing a medically supervised counter-conditioned aversion to addictive

substances. For more detailed information and articles about medical research, visit the Medical Research section on our web site at www.schickshadel.com.

How long is the treatment program?

Ten days. That’s all you need, if detox is not required. The length of a stay at Schick Shadel Hospital is shorter than many programs due to our unique treatment, which, because of the nature of the treatment program and its intensity, is administered in a hospital setting under medical supervision. Ten days allows graduates to return home more quickly, with fewer days away from their families, fewer days off of work, and less time away from other commitments.

*Based on results of a verified, independent survey of former patients (success being measured as total abstinence for one year and assessed by self-evaluation), as against published success rates from verified, comparable studies of other medical institutions.

I’ve tried 12-step programs before. Is Schick Shadel’s program based on the 12-step concept?

Schick Shadel Hospital provides a medical alternative treatment approach to addiction. We are not a 12-step program; but we recognize the need for “sober support” once patients leave our facility and restart their lives. To help patients maintain an effective continuing care plan, Schick Shadel refers program graduates to appropriate sober support resources, which may include Alcoholics Anonymous, Rational Recovery, Women for Sobriety, S.O.S., church-sponsored groups, and other sober support groups. Schick Shadel also offers onsite weekly support groups for both patients and graduates. Program graduates who live outside of the Seattle area and would like to connect with a hospital group may participate by phone, using a toll-free conference line.

Do you accept insurance?

Schick Shadel Hospital’s treatment program is covered by many insurance plans and financing is available to assist private pay patients. Our admission counselors will work with you to verify your benefits prior to admission and are available seven days a week to answer questions.

Can I maintain contact with family and work while at Schick Shadel Hospital?

Absolutely! As with most hospitals, family and friends are free to visit any time during daily visiting hours of 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., except when patients are in treatment or detox.

Each room has a telephone and patients are free to make and receive telephone calls throughout their stay. Cell phones, tablets, laptops and similar devices are generally welcome and patients can use them when not in treatment. We have Wi-Fi, too, so there’s really no reason for you not to stay in touch.
