One of North Carolina’s greatest resources is its libraries. Libraries in our communities, in our schools, in our institutions of higher education and as needed for special information needs in business, research and industry. And one of the greatest resources that each library in North Carolina has is its people; the librarians, paraprofessionals and support staff, student helpers, volunteers and citizens that support their institutions. The Libraries of North Carolina are also instrumental in the development and

economic well-being or our state and the work that is done in each and every library is significant to our society’s prosperity.

The North Carolina Library Association becomes the forum for speaking and collaboration of its membership to strengthen the collective missions of our libraries. NCLA is the conduit that connects librarians and library staff to their communities through a set of shared values representing intellectual freedom and information literacy standards that define the profession. I believe that this is the

association that makes up stronger together, in the face of economic hardships or professional challenges.

If elected as vice-president/president, I will work hard to be inclusive of all members of the library community as we collectively address issues and proactively seek insights to emerging trends and changing needs of our constituents. I will advocate for all libraries and their staffs to grow in this

profession in order to fulfill our mission to North Carolina and I will work with all of you to provide the opportunities that our members need to foster their own growth and development.

“Stronger Together,” the 2013 NCLA Conference theme, sums up the reason I believe the North Carolina Library Association is such an important organization. Libraries and librarians working together make our state a better place. Our collaboration, our sharing of ideas, and our diversity of perspectives and

institutions strengthen us all.

I believe libraries and librarians are most effective when they cooperate—working beyond their

institutional boundaries to create systems and services that benefit their greater communities. NC-LIVE and GALILEO are examples of library cooperation that have vastly extended the capacity and impact of libraries in North Carolina and Georgia. I have worked with both of those projects and have seen the importance of transcending institutional boundaries. The librarians who led those projects came together to work because of connections built through professional associations—not because they were assigned a task by their institution. Professional library associations, particularly at the state level, foster the personal connections and create the collaborative environment that makes such projects possible.

If elected as Vice President/President Elect, I will work to foster cross-institutional collaboration and, building on the already excellent work of the sections, roundtables, and committees of NCLA, to bring together librarians and library staff across the state. I will work to empower NCLA members to create the next NC LIVE. Through NCLA, together we will strengthen North Carolina.
