Advanced Techniques
in Coaching and
Mentoring
A Masterclass with Professor David Clutterbuck
Friday, January the 18
th, 2013 – Athens, Greece
One of the key competences of effective coaches and mentors, at any level, is their commitment to their own continuous learning in the role. Attending a masters level course at a university is not an option for most managers and professionals. They require instead short, focused and highly practical opportunities to add to their personal portfolio of skills and techniques.
This unique masterclass draws together a vast range of experience in the delivery of coaching and mentoring, current research into both roles from across the world, and the continuing project by Clutterbuck Associates and the Mentoring and Coaching Research Unit at Sheffield Hallam University to gather appropriate techniques from a wide range of related disciplines and approaches. Many of these techniques have been published in the book Techniques in Coaching and Mentoring in its just published sequel, Further Techniques in Coaching and Mentoring.
How does the Masterclass work?
The starting point for the masterclass is the existing experience of the participants. What works for them already?
Next, the masterclass explores the importance of having a wide portfolio of technique and presents guidelines for acquiring and experimenting with them.
Participants review their own practice and discuss occasions, when they have struggled to find the right approach to help their clients and, based on these experiences, the masterclass focuses on techniques relevant to those situations.
Typically, each masterclass presents at least 15-‐20 techniques and provides an opportunity to practice a proportion of these.
Typical topics include:
·∙ Creating rapid rapport
·∙ Helping people to access their values
·∙ Advanced questioning and listening processes
·∙ Working with emergent goals
·∙ Exploring diversity issues
·∙ Creating and using MDQs (Massively Difficult Questions)
·∙ How to build mutual challenge into the learning dialogue
Who should attend
CXO’s, HR Managers & Directors, Team Leaders, Project Leaders, Managers, Directors, Coaches & Mentors.
What participants learn
The outcomes for participants include:
·∙ A stronger sense of confidence in their competence as a coach or mentor and in their
ability to respond to learner needs
·∙ A more substantial toolbox of approaches
·∙ Clarity about how and when to experiment with innovative approaches
·∙ Deeper understanding of how knowledge from other helping disciplines can enrich
their coaching/ mentoring practice

What is CCE?
Continuing Coaching Education (CCE) refers to formal courses and seminars that teach skills or tools directly related to ICF Core Competencies, the personal development of the coach, the development of the coach's practice or other skills or tools that are directly applicable to coaching. CCE is generally for coaches who already have a credential.
What is a CCEU?
A Continuing Coaching Education Unit (CCEU) is 60 minutes of direct educational contact with an instructor. Self-‐study shall not count toward the awarding of CCEUs, nor will non-‐ educational time such as lunch breaks.
How do coaches use CCEUs?
The ICF offers credentials to individual coaches at three (3) levels: ACC, PCC, and MCC. Credentials must be renewed every three (3) years. The CCE requirement for certification renewal is 40 CCEUs over the three-‐year period. A minimum of 24 of the required 40 CCEUs must directly relate to the ICF Core Competencies.
This program has been approved for Core Competencies with 5 CCEUs.
