Background to Sigma Theta Tau (STTI)

• Sigma Theta Tau is an International Nursing Honor Society.

• A global community of nurse leaders

– members in 475 chapters distributed throughout 90

countries world wide.

• Facilitates the sharing of knowledge, scholarship, community

service and learning.

Founded in 1922 by six nurses at the Indiana University Training

School for Nurses, now the Indiana School of Nursing,

Indianapolis, USA.

– RCSI Bahrain would be the first School of Nursing &

Midwifery in the Middle East to form a Chapter

– RCSI Bahrain, could through Sigma form meaningful

collaborative links with existing Schools of Nursing in the

Middle East

Criteria for Membership -3

categories

a. Students in Basic Program:

Baccalaureate or equivalent

nursing degree which leads to

the first professional nursing

degree.

Students should have

completed at least one-half of

the required nursing

curriculum.

b. Graduate Program:

• An accredited program of

graduate study in nursing

including: master, post-master,

doctoral, and post doctoral.

• Students should have

completed a minimum of

one-quarter of the required graduate

curriculum.

• With a minimum baccalaureate or the equivalent in any field

who has demonstrated achievement in nursing.
