SAINTS AND SPECIAL OBSERVANCES

Sunday: Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time Monday: The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Tuesday: St. Stephen of Hungary Friday: St. John Eudes

Saturday: St. Bernard

The weather outside is beautiful, and one of the best places to play is the park. However, parents should start every visit to the park with a discussion with their kids about safety plan. Kids should know what to do if a stranger were to approach them, and who to go to if they feel uncomfortable or threatened. Public parks are a great place to play, but they are exposed to the public. Hav-ing a safety plan in place can help parents and kids feel secure and play safely this summer. For a copy of the TODAY.com article, email jvienna@la-archdiocese.org or call (213) 637-7227.

Brooke Quintanar, bquintanar@stemail.org TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Long ago, a signet ring was an essential part of the wardrobe of influential people. A letter

or document would be sealed with hot wax, and a signet ring pressed into the wax would affirm the origin of the document. In the case of the pope, at least from the thir-teenth century, the ring was used to seal public docu-ments with hot lead, saving the red wax for private let-ters. The public documents were called bullae after the Latin name for the lead stamp, and we still call them

"papal bulls."

It is not surprising, therefore, that a signet ring has long been bestowed as part of the inauguration of a pope. The ring is called the Pescatorio, or "Ring of the Fisher-man." It reminds the wearer of his link with Peter, and his responsibility to continue the apostolic ministry of "fishing for human beings." Until 1842 it actually functioned as a signet ring. Now, each pope receives a new gold ring at the beginning of his ministry. It goes on the fourth finger of his right hand and bears some fisherman design, usu-ally St. Peter casting nets from a boat, as well as the pope's name in Latin. A custom that endures for the pope, but not so much for bishops, is for people being introduced to him to kiss the Pescatorio as a sign of re-spect for his teaching authority. Another enduring custom is for the ring to be smashed and defaced at the pope's death, originally a way of preventing counterfeit deathbed documents.

Fr. Jim is turning another year older on Sept. 6th Please join us as we celebrate Fr. Jim’s birthday on Sunday, Sept. 4th. We will celebrate

af-ter the morning Masses in the hall with a reception. All are invited to this special day. If you would like to contribute a donation to help offset food, please make check payable to St. Euphrasia

Church attn.: BIRTHDAY. Please drop off in the col-lection basket or at the Parish Office. Mark your calendars.

Why we offer the Communion cup at Mass All parishes of the Archdiocese are asked to offer the Communion cup to the faithful at Mass, especially at Sunday and feast day Masses. This policy follows the directive of the General Instruction of the roman Missal (GIRM), which has been in place since 1970:

Holy Communion has a fuller form as a sign when its distributed under both kinds. For in this form the sign of the Eucharistic banquet is more clearly evi-dent and clear expression is given to the divine will be which the new and eternal Covenant is ratified in the Blood of the Lord… (281)

We become what we eat – and drink

If Mass were only about receiving grace, then partaking only of the Body of Christ would surely be sufficient. But Eucharist is about much more than that. It is also about the reason we receive grace – to go in peace to love and serve the Lord. Service includes sacrifice. The cup of salvation teaches us, and those around us, what sacri-fice ultimately demands. It demands that we proclaim the death of the Lord by becoming one with Christ’s body – and his Blood.

GIVING BACK

The Virgin received salvation so that she may give it back to the centuries.

Respecting and protecting our unborn broth-ers and sistbroth-ers is foundational to respecting and protecting anyone else. The pro-life movement’s message to care for an unwant-ed, unexpected or inconvenient baby is pre-cisely the kind of message that teaches our society to accept people where they are and to care for other marginalized or stigmatized groups. That’s why this is so important for all Americans from every walk of life. David Bereit, the founder of the multi-national 40 Days for Life prayer vigil group, said that “the exposé videos, which caught Planned Parenthood red-handed harvesting and trafficking in aborted baby body parts, have had an unprecedented effect on awakening and mobilizing pro-life Americans.” Taxpayers should not be on the hook for Planned Parenthood’s activities, “especially when much better and more comprehensive health alternatives for women and families outnumber Planned Parenthood facilities 20 to 1 throughout the country.” One taxpayer dollar is too much for an abortion giant that rips the limbs from babies, never mind $500 million. Human life is priceless.

BOOK SUNDAY

Sister Judith's Book Ministry will resume in the month of September 2016. Anyone who would like to help carry out Sister's promise to spread GOOD spiritual and reli-gious reading to our Parish community is asked to con-tact Linda Stearns e-mail address: lin-dastearns@aol.com. This Ministry will be under the new title of Sister Judith Fogassy Book Fund for Adult Religious Education. This is a great way to honor Sis-ter Judith's passion for books, reading and religious education.

THE COSTS OF DISCIPLESHIP

Today's responsorial psalm, Psalm 40, is more famil-iar to us with the refrain "Here am I, Lord." This "Here am I" is Jeremiah's great prophetic response to God's call. But today's story of Jeremiah and the refrain "Lord, come to my aid!" remind us that there are always two sides to following the call of God. The author of the Letter to the Hebrews knew this, too. He reminded his readers that even weighted down with burdens and sins, we can still persevere by keeping our eyes fixed on Jesus, who himself knew the shame and pain of the cross, but saw be-yond it to the joy of sitting at the right of the throne of God.

Jesus himself gave the disciples a "sneak preview" of a baptism that would not be as wondrous as the one in the Jordan that inaugurated his ministry, but would be one of fire and anguish. Today's words from scripture may not be terribly soothing, but in their honesty and strength we can acknowledge the difficulties of daily discipleship, and take com-fort in the assurance of our own salvation in Christ.
