(That’s more than 18 Libraries of Congress!) “Lack of appropriate datacenter infrastructure and existing silos in work practices are preventing UK enterprises from benefiting from big data analytics projects, according to a study by Vanson Bourne, commissioned by Hitachi Data Systems.

The study, Route to Real Time, found that 75% of UK organizations are currently investing in big data analytics, and 80% of these are deploying solutions. But as many as 60% of those investing in big data projects agreed that they do not have the datacenter infrastructure in place to analyze up-to-the-minute information across all their data sets.” – Computer

What services do we need from a data center in order to open the campus? 1. Domain Management, Identity Management, and Network Authentication:

• The university needs to be able to establish computing practices based off internal policies. A server environment that host an internal Active Directory system that FPU Staff will use for network access, applications and email, and internet should be configured and put in place.

• Since the need for these systems reside mostly at OPP it is recommended that the equipment be located in the OPP building.

2. File Storage and Retrieval:

• The university has an urgent need to store and share files locally. A file storage server should be installed at OPP.

3. Permanent Email Solution:

• The University leverages a cloud based email system from Elephant outlook. This worked fine as a temporary solution but lacks many of the features required by the university for business productivity.

4. Network Access and Permanent Internet:

• The current network is managed by University of Florida as are the computers that reside. The internet access circuits that connect OPP and the construction site are put in place and managed by UF.

• FPU will work with the selected vender from the Redundant Communications ITN to establish permanent communications, firewall protection, and internet.

5. Backup Systems:

• The university will need appropriate backup systems put in place to protect the systems in steps 1 – 4.

What do we have so far for space that can be used for a data center?

OPP: There isn’t an easy option for computing space at OPP at this time. There is a Small Closet on the first floor

and a small closet on the third. Neither is suitable for housing servers or backup systems; there could be an option to repurpose the tele-presence room on the first floor to house temporary equipment.

IST Building: There are two large computer/server rooms that will be suitable for hosting at least three full sized

server cabinets in each for a total of at least 6 cabinets. Each cabinet can support up to as many as a dozen servers depending on configuration. The rooms are interconnected with the campus and the other communication points via Single Mode Fiber Optics. This room is supported by battery backup and a power generator.

Campus Control Center: There is a large capacity computer room inside the building that is suitable for up to 14

server cabinets. This room is connected to the IST via Single Mode Fiber cabling. This room is supported by battery backup and a power generator. – Ready in October.

Polk State Facility: The space at the joint use facility at PSC has one large data room configured as a data center. It

has proper cooling, power, and redundancy on and off campus. There is also another room that has been configure to house additional server and network equipment. The legacy USF Polytechnic Network equipment resides in this space and could be potentially repurposed for FPU.

Other: The ITN for redundant communications has provisions for providing co-location services off campus that also

could be made available for server hosting and applications that can be used for data center purposes.

What are our options to fulfill the need of a data center?

Option 1 – The Data Center.

Build or rent a Tier 3 Data center and populate with appropriate cabinets and servers.

Option 2 – The Hybrid.

Institute a plan to establish small physical, private presence consisting of domain, security, and

Identity management services in Polytechnic owned and operated data center and outsource auxiliary

services such as: File Storage, Data Ware Housing, Media Storage, and Telecommunications off

Physical Data Center – The cost of a Tier III (The Uptime Institute standard):

Construction Costs: $900.00 - $1,100 Per Sq. Ft. (2,000 Sq. Ft. to Support 4 to 5,000 users) = $2,000,000 Time to Construct: 12 – 18 Months.

Lease Space: $343 per Square Foot per year. Based on 2,000 Sq. Ft. Location = $686,000 per year. Doesn’t Include Electricity, UPS, or Cooling.

Both Solutions require the support of at least 1 FTE for 130 Servers

Recommend Option 2 “The Hybrid”:

Take advantage of the fact that the University doesn’t have a large existing platform to migrate, and we are free to create a solution that leverages the best of both the Physical Data Center and Virtual server environments – a hybrid environment. Leveraging the cloud in harmony with University owned equipment to provide a flexible, scalable solution that can be adaptable to the changes the university will undergo over the next decade.

We recommend building a hybrid physical/virtual model within the FPU Polk State Data Room Facility. In other words, build only what we absolutely have to today, leverage Software as a Service Models and cloud storage for now. We control security, identity management, domain locally, and decide to expand at our leisure.

Benefits:

1. More Flexibility to expand the campus 2. Much Quicker timeline for Implementation 3. Much lower upfront and long term Costs 4. Less personnel

5. Does not prohibit option 1 somewhere down the road.

 Cloud – “an emerging compute model for delivering IT related capabilities as a service and ease of use, economies of scale and flexibility in

sourcing and adapting to change.” - IBM

 Data Center – “A data center (sometimes spelled datacenter) is a centralized repository, either physical or ‘virtual’ for the storage, management, and dissemination of data and information organized around a particular body of knowledge or pertaining to a particular business.”

 Florida Lambda Rail: A high performance fiber optic network linking Florida Universities together for the purpose of collaboration and further education.

 Fiber Optic Cabling: Fiber optics is a transport media made from glass and allows data to travel at the speed of light. There are two types of Fiber Optic Cabling on the Campus. Single Mode and Multimode. Single Mode is intended to only handle one signal at a time; however, it is a large capacity signal and can be carried over a long distance-several miles. Multimode is intended for shorter cable lengths and is usually inside a building and can support many signals, but for only a short distance. Both are the most powerful transport media available today.

 Passive Optical Networks (PONS): A low cost fiber optic network which allows for bandwidth expansion in smaller spaces such as laboratories and classrooms.

 SIS - Student Information System - The core software system that manages the student experience through out their relationship with the institution. Everything from Application to Graduation.

 ERP – Enterprise Resource Planning – The back office system that manages financial operations of the organization.  LMS – Learning Management System. The online Classroom.

 BYOD – Bring Your Own Device. Everyone has personal computing devices today that range from smart phones, tablets, to multiple Personal Computers.

 CRM – Constituent Resource Management. A software platform that tracks potential students and or donors and creates a communication trail of all interaction from and to that individual.
