ASTON MARTIN DB11 COUPE

The DB11, launched in 2016, was the first clean-sheet Aston in more than a decade and marked the start of a fresh chapter for the company. Replacing the popular DB9, the DB11 was initially available with a new twin-turbo 5.2-litre V12, to be joined a year later by an AMG-sourced twin-turbo 4.0-litre V8. Both offer the requisite level of performance to complement Aston Martin’s traditional GT refinements.

ASTON MARTIN DB5 VANTAGE COUPE, 1965

The DB5 is probably the most famous Aston Martin ever produced thanks to its role in several James Bond films, beginning with Goldfinger in 1964. The car used in that film was the original DB5 prototype, with another standard car taking over for the stunts. With sales exceeding 1,000 in just over 2 years of production the DB5 is also one of the most successful Astons in the company’s long history, even though it cost twice as much as the Jaguar E-Type when it first went on sale in 1963.

FERRARI SF90 STRADALE

The 211mph SF90 is the first Ferrari that can be driven on purely electric power. Officially classified as a PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle), the SF90 has 3 electric motors making 217bhp and enabling speeds of up to 84mph within a range of 16 miles.

The primary power source is a twin-turbo 3990cc V8 which adds another 769bhp for a total of almost 1000bhp!

FERRARI 512 TR, 1993

The 512 TR was a welcome update to the 1984 Testarossa and helped to keep Ferrari competitive against Lamborghini’s new Diablo. Introduced at the 1992 Los Angeles car show, it was a marked improvement over the earlier model. There were numerous interior updates to improve driver and passenger comfort and a modified front end which softened the original sharp lines but retained the striking appeal of the original Testarossa. Power was also increased by a useful 38bhp, enabling a top speed of 195mph.

BUGATTI CHIRON SUPER SPORT

Taking its name from 1930s gentleman racer Louis Chiron, the stunning £2.7 million, 1577bhp Chiron Super Sport has a limited top speed of 273mph and can accelerate from 0-124mph in 5.8 seconds. Production is limited to 60 examples and the car has much in common with the Bugatti Super Sport 300+, the first ever production car to exceed 300mph, but offers rather more in the way of interior accessories than the stripped-out 300+.

BUGATTI TYPE 55, 1932

By the early 1930s, Bugatti had established an unrivalled reputation for building cars with outstanding performance on road or track. The Type 55 was designed by Jean Bugatti with a two-seat roadster body which is universally acknowledged as one of the finest ever to grace a motor car. Aimed at only the wealthiest clientele (including a certain Louis Chiron), the Type 55 sold in appropriately limited numbers with just 38 being built between 1932 and 1935, making it far more exclusive than its closest rival, the Alfa Romeo 8C.

NOBLE M600

Lee Noble followed his M10 with the memorable M12 and M400 but left the company with his M15 still at the design stage.

The new owners redeveloped that concept to produce the M600, with a carbonfibre body replacing the planned fibreglass, a bespoke interior and a Volvo-sourced V8 engine instead of the intended Ford V6. Performance is startling, with a sub 3 second 0-60mph time and a maximum of 225mph.

NOBLE M10 V6, 1998

Introduced in the UK in 1998 and favourably received by the motoring press, the Noble M10 was a completely new, hand-built British sports car with an impressive pedigree. Lee Noble had been involved in the design and production of specialist cars since 1982, gaining an enviable reputation for engineering integrity and innovation. Noble assisted McLaren in the development of their amazing F1, with two of his Ultima Mark 3s being used as development vehicles.

BMW M3 COMPETITION

If you can see past the oversized, opinion- dividing grille, this is an M3 that continues the line of benchmark high-performance sports saloons from BMW. It’s the sixth generation M3, with the first dating back to 1986. The engine is a twin-turbo 3.0-litre V6, making over 500bhp for the first time in an M3. Despite its considerable weight, 0-62mph takes only 3.9 seconds while top speed is limited to 155mph.

BMW 2002 tiiL, 1975

A true classic in automobile design, the 02 series, first seen in 1966, saved the ailing BMW company and helped build it back up to its current position as one of the world’s leading manufacturers. Of compact design, neatly styled and beautifully built, the 02 was aimed at a slightly less affluent market than previous BMW models. Practical and affordable, the early 1600cc cars were a sellout, delaying the introduction of variations such as the 2002 ti which gave the baby BMW enough power to make it a lively performer.

LAMBORGHINI HURACÁN PERFORMANTE SPYDER

The outrageously styled (and raucous) Huracán Performante blends Italian passion and state of the art technology within an aluminium and carbonfibre body. Magneto- rheologic suspension contains magnetically controlled fluid which changes the damper response, while electronically controlled all- wheel drive targets power for precise control.

The Performante’s 5204cc 40-valve V10 develops 640bhp, a sub 3 second 0-60 time and a top speed of 202mph.

LAMBORGHINI COUNTACH LP500 S, 1982

The Countach was unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in 1971, replacing the legendary Miura. It became the definitive supercar for car-obsessed teenagers, with posters adorning bedroom walls across the world. The breathtaking styling was the work of Marcello Gandini, of Bertone fame, and the shape was a riot of creative genius that ignored all established rules of car design.

The original Bertone design evolved only slightly, gaining spoilers for downforce and vents for engine and brake cooling as power increased.

BENTLEY CONTINENTAL GT W12 COUPE

The Bentley marque has always been synonymous with speed, style and luxury - a touch of class built to the highest possible standards yet capable of supercar performance.

The Continental GT carries on that tradition with the unusual W12 engine producing 626bhp, a 0-60mph time of 3.5 seconds and a top speed of 208mph, all to be enjoyed from the hushed comfort of the traditional wood and hand-stitched leather cabin.

BENTLEY CONTINENTAL S2 SALOON, 1960

Introduced in 1959 and produced until 1962, the S2 Continental is considered the finest model in Bentley’s S-series. It was renowned for its unrivalled touring ability thanks to remarkably generous interior space for four passengers and their luggage. The majority of S2 bodies were by Bentley but a small number were created by the top coachbuilders of the day, including Hooper, Park Ward and Mulliner.

Power for the S2 came from an aluminium 6230cc V8 engine.

MASERATI MC20

The pretty MC20 marks the company’s return to the supercar market which it last entered in 2004 with the MC12. That car had much in common with Ferrari’s Enzo but the MC20 is 100% pure Maserati. From first sketch to launch in Modena took just 2 years, which is remarkable. Power comes from a new twin-turbo 3.0-litre V6, making over 600bhp, sub 3 second 0-60mph and a top speed of over 200mph.

MASERATI MERAK, 1981

The Giugiaro-designed Merak was introduced in 1972, essentially a junior version of the Bora. It substituted a new Maserati-designed V6 engine (shared with Citroen’s SM) for the Bora’s V8, resulting in better handling thanks to the reduction in weight and a more even front-rear weight distribution. There was also room for a small back seat which the Bora lacked. The lighter, more powerful SS arrived in 1975, increasing power from 187bhp to an impressive 210bhp.

PORSCHE 911 (992) CARRERA

No other sports car in the world has stayed in production as long as the Porsche 911.

The first was produced in 1963 and although there have been many stages in the car’s evolution the design formula remains the same to this day. Now in its eighth generation, the 911 remains one of the most practical and desirable of all supercars, being both stunningly fast but well-mannered.

PORSCHE 911 (964) CARRERA RS, 1992

RS is short for Rennsport, ‘racing’ in German, and denotes the most lightweight of the normally aspirated Porsche 911 models, with the weight saving obsession removing many creature comforts and even replacing the metal bonnet badge with a sticker. As is often the case, you end up paying more for less and all early RS-badged 911s are now extremely valuable. This 1992 964 would have cost £60,000 new.

Auction value for a tidy example now? £300,000 or more.

ALFA ROMEO GIULIA VELOCE

The Giulia is Alfa Romeo’s answer to the BMW 3-Series or the Mercedes C-Class, but where the German cars are best described as functional mid-sized saloons the Giulia is undeniably a very attractive option.

The 276bhp Veloce shares its good looks and overall design with the range-topping 503bhp Quadrifoglio, which is widely accepted to be Alfa’s best car for many years.

ALFA ROMEO 1750 GTV, 1971

The 1750 GTV, or GT Veloce, entered production in 1967 as a replacement for the Giulia Sprint GTV. Visual changes included a longer bonnet and four headlamps instead of two, while the cabin sides were more rounded to increase passenger space. The most important change was under the bonnet, with capacity increased to 1779cc (from 1600) creating one of Alfa’s sweetest running and sounding engines, practical for everyday use but potent enough to satisfy the enthusiastic driver.

MERCEDES

AMG GT-C ROADSTER

Entering a market sector already owned by Audi’s R8 Spider and Porsche’s 911 Turbo Cabriolet was always going to be a big ask but it would be difficult to argue against the GT-C Roadster deserving its place. There are echoes of the 1957 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Roadster in the powerful yet elegant design, while the twin-turbo 4.0-litre V8 complements those looks with genuine supercar performance.

MERCEDES-BENZ 190SL, 1957

As driven by Grace Kelly in the film High Society and Elvis Presley in GI Blues, this is a classic car with the emphasis firmly on style.

Motivated primarily by the desire for US dollars, Mercedes conceived the 190SL as a cut-price cousin to the legendary 300SL and went on to sell 25 times as many of them (25,881 in total). While lacking in outright performance, the 190SL was a relaxed cruiser, ideal for taking two people and plenty of luggage on transcontinental touring holidays.

LOTUS EVIJA

The Lotus Evija is the first all-electric British hypercar and looks set to be the world’s most powerful series production EV.
