June 2, 2019 ~ The Ascension of the Lord - Seventh Sunday of Easter

222 E. Fremont St. Appleton, WI 54915 920-739-3196 www.sacredheartappleton.com

MISSION STATEMENT

Sacred Heart Parish is a welcoming people, nourished by the Eucharist, inspired by the word of God, engaged in lifelong learning, with outreach to the poor.

NEW MASS SCHEDULE

Saturday 4:30 pm Sunday 9:00 am Mon. No Mass Tues. 6:30 pm Wed. Thurs. Fri. 8:00 am

As we await the celebration of Pentecost…

After Jesus ascended, the apostles, as instructed, returned to Jerusalem. As they

awaited the promise of the Father; “All these devoted themselves with one accord

to prayer, together with some women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and his

brothers.” Acts 1:14

Following in the example of the apostles and Mary, let us each day this week join them in prayer as we await the celebration

of Pentecost.

A Prayer for Pentecost

Come, Holy Spirit, come!

And from your celestial home Shed a ray of light divine!

Heal our wounds, our strength renew;

On our dryness pour your dew;

Wash the stains of guilt away.

Bend the stubborn heart and will;

Melt the frozen, warm the chill;

Guide the steps that go astray.

On the faithful, who adore And confess you, evermore In your sevenfold gift descend.

Give them virtue’s sure reward;

Give them your salvation, Lord;

Give them joys that never end.

Amen.

Alleluia.

(From the Sequence for the Mass of Pentecost)

7 Things Every High School Graduate Should Hear

1. Live with intention. College will be full of new opportunities. Think carefully about your priorities for your new start.

2. Make the right friends. There will be plenty of new people! Concentrate on the ones who motivate you to be a better person.

3. It's a big world! Look for new perspectives, new op- portunities, and new ideas that push you to grow.

4. Find a mentor. Building relationships with people who have "been there, done that" can be a great help.

5. Give yourself away. You may not need to volunteer anymore, but you'll surprised what you learn, how you grow, and who you meet when you serve.

6. Before you go, learn how to do your laundry, address an envelope, schedule a doctor's appointment, use pub- lic transportation, and cook basic meals

PARISH FEST 2019 August 17th & 18th

Our babies at 18 weeks in the womb:

By 18 weeks the babies now have finger- prints. They are the size of a sweet potato around 7 oz. in weight and 5 and 1/2 inches long.

Mom at 18 weeks, her heart is working 40 to 50%

harder than before becoming pregnant. She may experience feeling faint and lightheaded. Her blood has

double duty in nourishing baby as well as herself.

If feeling dizzy spells, moms are encouraged to eat a piece or two of fruit to support better blood sugar levels

and stabilize faint feelings.

Keep on praying, just shy of 1/2 way to baby`s birth!

THOUGHTS TO PONDER

WHAT IS IT TO BE A WITNESS?

Jesus tells the Apostles in our first reading from the Book of Acts that, “...you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, throughout Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” The Greek word for witness here is martyr. The New Testament makes frequent use of court imagery to speak of our salvation. The Holy Spirit is frequently called the Advocate; Satan is called the accuser. Do you see the parallel with defendant and prosecutor? A witness in the legal court setting, ideally, is someone who testifies to what is true. The role of a court witness is to answer truthfully, the questions posed by the prosecution and defense. The role of Christ’s martyrs is to provide an answer to the biggest questions of life.

Why am I here? What is my purpose? What will make me truly happy? The answer is found in the person of Jesus, Who is the Truth. It seems that in our present day, where a plethora of philosophies and ideologies abound, great confusion regarding these big questions persist. If we are to be Christ’s witnesses, we too must be clothed from on high, the power of the Holy Spirit. Let’s take this final week as an opportunity to prepare for the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost. If you like you can pray a novena like the one found here; https://www.ewtn.com/

devotionals/pentecost/seven.html God’s blessings.
