N ALL
timesand
in all lands, stucco hasbeen
a favored building material.The
fact that,properly made,
it isdurable
tothe
pointof permanence, combines
readilywith such
other building materials as brick, stoneand
concrete,and
iscomparatively inexpensive to obtain
and
apply, gives stucco avery
practical building value.The
further fact that stuccomay be
colored to suit the builder's taste or requirements, and
thatwhile
plastic itmay be worked up
inany
texture toharmonize with
either period design or original style gives it rare possibilities for theachievement of
architectural beauty.The
chieflimitationof
stuccoup
tothistime hasbeen
the difficultyofobtaining exactly the texture that characterizes a certain period or
style,and,
even
more,of
producing the desired colorwhen
that colormay be mixed on
the job, orof matching
a certain colorwhen
the batches aremixed
at different times orunder
different conditions.Now
theUnited
StatesGypsum Company
has perfected a scientific callycompounded
stucco, readymixed
in the desired shadeof
mineralcolor. It is waterproof, non-staining, plastic, easy to apply,
and
per<manently
durable.Through
extensive researchand
investigation in co-operationwith members
of theChicago Art
Institute, therehave been
developed in Oriental Stucco the characteristic texturesand
colors associatedwith
each of the principal architectural periods. Severalof
these periodsmuch
favored in buildingtoday
are dealtwith
in pictures, platesand
text of this book.Oriental Stucco
comes
ready preparedfrom
the factory,and
allthat is
needed
is the additionof
cleanwater and proper
manipulationby
theworkman
toproduce
in Oriental Stucco the beautiful textureand
color effects thatmark
the finestof both Old World and Modern
stucco
work.

broad, irregular trowel marks, in combinations of half-timberedwork,

the characteristicworking and
the distinctive coloring of English design, Oriental Stucco has a perfect adaptability. The

as for the texture, a broad,heavy-handed
