Manual del instructor

This manual has four sections, as follows :

1. Access to the platform

2. Access to the guides

3. Structure of the guides

4. Evidence management

1. Access to the platform

Likewise the other SENA virtual courses,

English (dot) works A1 Level 2

is

hosted in the Blackboard platform. To access the course, you can either

follow the corresponding link in Sofia Plus or go directly to the Blackboard

homepage, as shown below:

(3)

Manual del instructor

It is important to check that the course you are about to access is the one identified as 201309052: english(dot)works 2.0 A1 Level 2. Once you have accessed, you can see an interface like the one presented below:

2. Access to the guides

In SENA face-to-face sessions, both instructors and apprentices work based on learning guides whose information is organized in a standardized institutional form. In the case of virtual learning, that information appears in the guides in a multimedia format, that is, in a digital interactive version.

To access the guides, just click on the button Learning Guides, located on the left column of the course interface.

Once you click on that button, a set of folders will be shown. Each folder corresponds to the different multimedia guides of the A1-Level 2 course: Diagnosis Activity, Learning Activity 1, Learning Activity 2, Learning Activity 3, and Consolidation Activity. The interface must look like this:

3. Structure of the guides

The course consists of three kinds of guides: Diagnosis, Learning, and Consolidation which, in turn, correspond to three different kinds of activities.

Diagnosis Guide

The Diagnosis Guide is intended to help the apprentice to have an introductory approach to the course. In this regard, this guide includes some lexical review materials and two exams: an introductory test and a final test. None of these tests is hosted is Blackboard, but inside the guide itself. It means that both the questions and the answers are managed in a multimedia format. However, the results of the last one of these tests will be linked to the Score Center (Centro de Calificaciones). To access the Diagnosis Guide, click on the corresponding button, next to the folder icon:

(6)

Once you access the folder, you will see a label identifying the Diagnosis Guide and a title button. By clicking on such button, you can open the multimedia guide, as shown below:

This multimedia guide has, basically, four components from top to bottom: a section title, a main visualization screen, a navigation panel, and a help button. Such components are illustrated below:

The section title indicates what section of the guide you are currently in; the

main visualization screen shows the contents of the guide; the navigation panel allows you to browse throughout the guide by means of the three section buttons, a pointer arrow or simply using the keyboard arrows; and the help button will show you two options: a video help about the guides, and a downloadable version of the guide. This downloadable version corresponds to the classical SENA form for learning guides.

To start browsing throughout the Diagnosis Guide, just click on the Start-up button. This button will take you to a brief introductory situation before working on the guide. Then, when clicking on the central button, you will find, on the one hand, a self-assessment test to check understanding of some lexical and grammatical aspects; on the other hand, apprentices will find a set of links to learning materials to reinforce their knowledge before taking a second interactive test. This second test is not for self-evaluation and will be linked to the Score Center (Centro de Calificaciones). Finally, the third navigation button (Further) will take you to a set of external links to some support materials on the web.

Learning Guide

In A1-Level 2, there are three learning guides that share the same structure. These guides are intended to provide apprentices with learning materials and ask them for evidences of their knowledge, performance or product development. To access any of the Learning Guides, click on the corresponding button, next to the folder icon:

Once you access the folder, you will see a label identifying the Learning Guide and a title button. By clicking on such button, you can open the multimedia guide, as shown below:

(9)

Manual del instructor

This type of multimedia guide has the same five components of the diagnosis guide: a section title, a main visualization screen, a navigation panel, and a help button. Such components are illustrated below:

(10)

Manual del instructor

To start browsing throughout any of the Learning Guides, just click on the Start-up button. This button will take you to a brief introductory video about how to work on the guide. When clicking in the central button, you can see an intro sub-button and several other sub-buttons that take you to the stages that the apprentices have to go through in order to complete the learning activity. The way to manage the content of the stages will be described in more detail in the Evidence management section of this manual. Finally, by clicking on the “Further” button, you will access a set of external links to some support materials on the web.

Consolidation guide

The Consolidation Guide is intended to help the apprentices to improve their previous work in the learning guides. To access the Consolidation Guide, click on the corresponding button, next to the folder icon:

(11)

Manual del instructor

This type of multimedia guide has the same five components of the diagnosis and learning guides: a section title, a main visualization screen, a navigation panel, and a help button. Such components are illustrated below:

Once you access the folder, you will see a label identifying the Consolidation Guide and a title button. By clicking on such button, you can open the multimedia guide, as shown below:

(12)

However, this type of multimedia guide only has two navigation buttons: Start-up and Stages. The Start-up button will take you to a brief welcome and video tutorial about what apprentices have to do. The Stages button will show you a set of steps that the apprentice has to go through in order to complete the activity.

4. Evidence management

Based on the methodological approach of SENA, the training process includes the work on different learning activities to develop three types of evidences: product, performance and knowledge. In every virtual guide (diagnosis, learning and consolidation), the instructions to hand in or fulfill the tasks are located after the introductory video.

(14)

Manual del instructor

When selecting each stage, you will find a slide with the components of every task the apprentices have to fulfill.

The apprentices need to identify the things they have to do in every stage. This information is located in the button “What to do?”

(15)

Manual del instructor

Every stage has three parts:

(16)

(17)

Manual del instructor

• What to study? It allows the apprentices to access the established learning material to fulfill the tasks of the activity.

(18)

Manual del instructor

The learning material is intended to provide what apprentices need to know in order to fulfill the goals of each learning guide.

(19)

Manual del instructor

• How to check it? Through this option, it is possible to download the different checklists to assess the products or performance evidences in every stage.

Every assessment instrument will allow the apprentices determine if their products fulfill the requirements of the stage. In order to approve the course, every guide must have the letter “A” which stands for Approved. However, the evidence can be approved with a minimum score of 70 points out of 100.

For this course, A1- Level 2, the product evidences have to be uploaded in a journal. This tool is provided by Blackboard® and the instructor has to create one journal per apprentice. The different links or products must be uploaded to the personal journal.

To create the journal, the instructor has to locate the “journal tool” on the left panel. Then, the journal can be created by following the procedure to do so.

(20)

Manual del instructor

To hand in the written performance evidences (written participation in forums),

the apprentice must press the button “Forums” on the left panel. Here, he/she needs to identify the correspondent forums and do the activity.

(21)

In the case of the speaking performance (oral participation in web-conferences), the instructor and apprentice need to use the Blackboard Collaborate tool. In order to use this option, the instructor has to select the “Control Panel” option on the left part of the platform and select the button options. Then, press on “Course tools” and click on “Blackboard Collaborate”. After this, the instructor has to fill in some information in order to create the oral meeting with the apprentice to assess the speaking performance.

Finally, knowledge evidences are tests which are intended to assess the apprentices’ knowledge throughout the learning process. In the diagnosis learning activity, the test is included in the guide interface. The apprentices have to follow the instructions and check their process.

(22)

In the learning activities, there is a button that links the guide to the test. The instructor can enable different options of the test if it is required
