About the 2015
Schools Program
This booklet is an invitation to explore the range of live arts experiences coming to your school in 2015. Between these pages sit ten unique performances and workshops that will entertain, educate and empower your students to create, change and question; experiences that will transform the everyday by creating pop-up worlds of imagination and inquiry.
Akin to a vibrant and colourful festival, the range of experiences on offer in this program are diverse. In 2015, you can witness exquisite puppetry, demanding physical theatre, explosive dance and delightful music. Sometimes they draw from published scripts or children’s literature. Sometimes they deal purely in imagination. But all are carefully selected to provide inspiring arts experiences from trusted theatre makers. Combine all of this with the skills of respected education experts, and you have a program that draws on themes and issues not only relevant to the curriculum, but to your students’ lives and interests.
And just like that festival, there are a range of opportunities to build upon your live performance to make the most of this pop-up opportunity. Each of the performances are accompanied by useful and relevant Teacher Resources developed by esteemed educators. Why not make the most of a visit by the touring artists and further supplement your students’ learning with a masterclass?
Experiences in the arts, while they might only pop up once or twice a term, can have incredible effects in developing critical thinking and empathy. They enable exploration, challenging perceptions and opening up worlds other than our own. They build communication and collaboration skills, while strengthening perseverance.
So, explore the program and open up the possibilities of a pop-up world of creative learning in your school.
Welcome to a pop-up world of creative learning.

We’ve made selecting creative learning experiences for your students quick and easy. As many of the productions are relevant across multiple year levels, you will find offerings for both primary and secondary students within this booklet. Here are some tips about how this program works:
1. All of the productions are inspiring, creative experiences that connect to the curriculum, ensuring their relevance in your students’ learning. Curriculum connections are clearly communicated for each production.
2. All of the performances are the same price. $8 + GST per student with a minimum of $800 + GST per performance.
3. All of the masterclasses are the same price. $350 + GST for a maximum of 30 students (90 minutes).

• Which year levels will gain the most from this experience. (This is more guideline than restriction. You might be studying Children’s Theatre in Year 10, for example).
• Whether there is a masterclass that can accompany the performance.

An Experiment with
Waiting for Godot
by Samuel Beckett
The team behind An Experiment with The Caucasian Chalk Circle shift their witty, engaging approach to another great and ‘difficult’ dramatist - Samuel Beckett.
Waiting for Godot is one of the great plays of the twentieth century. But what’s it all about? Who are Vladimir and Estragon? Why are they waiting? And where? The rewards of the play can be great, but understanding it is challenging. Fortunately, two actors have just seen a production, and they can’t wait to describe it. If only they could agree on what they’ve really seen...
An Experiment with Waiting for Godot by Samuel Beckett puts the play’s challenge to the audience in perspective for students, examining Beckett’s playful and profound approach to our expectations, and the nature of theatre itself. Drawing clear lines to those Beckett has influenced, from David Bowie to Seinfeld, An Experiment with Waiting for Godot by Samuel Beckett is a careful illumination of exactly how great an impact the play had from the moment of its first performance to the present day, and how Beckett changed Western theatre forever.
Two actors come onto the stage, and wait.
What for, and why, remains one of the great
theatrical riddles in history.

Wombat Sing?
You’re invited to go on a journey with two singer song-writers who are passionate about music — music to dance to, music to work to, music that can express what you believe and what you feel. Along the way, discover secrets of the natural world, of being one with the land, and how to respect and look after Mother Earth and her creatures.
In this lively and original show, two passionate young musicians draw on their Indigenous heritage to combine stories about the environment with a range of musical styles including acoustic, hip-hop, rap and reggae.
As the audience become involved in simple music-making and song-writing, cultural history and contemporary awareness fuse in a powerful affirmation of the imagination and the ability everyone has to express themselves through music.

ARTSLINK QUEENSLAND AND DEAD PUPPET SOCIETY PRESENT
Last Tree in the City
Edward lives in a city; a busy, grey city. Colour disappears into the concrete walls and there are only hard, grey paving stones to play on. But at the end of the street stands the last tree in the city! The tree is beautiful and Edward swings on its branches and gets lost in its leaves. Until one day, the tree is gone. Edward is devastated and lonely; everything is grey once more. But wait! There just might be some hidden beauty peeking out from behind the concrete walls.
Brought to life using astonishing table-top puppetry, Edward and his pet duck will explore an immersive world built from projected picture book illustrations, text and animations. This whimsical production will inspire students’ creative thinking and encourage them to find ways to beautify their own communities.
A poignant story about the environment and the way children relate to its beauty, Last Tree in the City explores themes of sustainability, the environment and active citizenship.
Adapted from the pages of Peter Carnavas’s
adored picture book, the Dead Puppet Society
brings Edward and his city to life using their

ARTSLINK QUEENSLAND AND LIESEL ZINK PRESENT
Shift
Drawing from the experiences of young people, Shift explores identity, human connection and conflict in this interactive dance and physical theatre production.
Award winning choreographer Liesel Zink and sound artist Mike Willmett have interviewed over 60 young people who have shared their perspectives on social issues including the peer pressure, social networking, sexting, power, authority and the worth of simple acts of kindness. Their thoughts, voices and perspectives have been collated into a unique soundtrack that drives the Dance Theatre work.
Two performers will invite three of your students to join them up on stage for the duration of the performance. Directed through headphones, the students help build the scenes as they explore the complexities of human relationships through the use of everyday pedestrian movement, stylised gesture, and highly physical contemporary dance. This dynamic production will enlighten students’ awareness of social patterns and instil within them the power to make change.

ARTSLINK QUEENSLAND AND ZEAL THEATRE PRESENT
The Apology
Zeal Theatre is charging back into schools with a high-octane reworking of their award-winning production, The Apology.
Inspired by true events, The Apology is a searingly honest look at the repercussions of taking revenge and the long term effects that bullying can have.
Ray is being bullied by ‘the Eneme’. When a year-nine excursion to the Boggo Road Gaol goes awry, Ray’s dad encourages him to pick his moment and fight back. The Apology ricochets through a five year period where the bruises of bullying refuse to heal. Told from an unbiased perspective, this powerful production forces students to decide if the punishment fits the crime.
Fuelled with intensity, The Apology fuses physical theatre techniques, multiple role-sharing and live music into visceral and dynamic Theatre for Young People. The Apology is an example of Zeal Theatre’s signature style of doing as much as possible with as little as possible.
There is no revenge so complete as forgiveness.

Animating Spaces is a multi-arts project produced by Artslink Queensland that revitalises and celebrates significant and unusual spaces in Queensland. Through locally driven arts activities and events, fifteen regional communities have the opportunity to re-imagine their town, employing local artists and producers to develop creative management skills through mentor-support and funding assistance.
Since 2013, Animating Spaces has seen spaces in Cleveland, Hervey Bay, Toowoomba, Eudlo, Charters Towers, Yeppoon, Roma, Samford, Cooktown and Gladstone invigorated through the arts, reflecting the residents’ talents and aspirations. “One of the things that is a big trend around the world now is … animating spaces in the form of place making and that happens best when the community makes their own place something special; where they bring to life [through the arts] the things they value and they give the ordinary a feeling of something extraordinary, and Animating Spaces certainly did that.”
- Cr. Paul Bishop of Redlands City Council. For more information, visit us online at:

Local Arts Councils (LACs) are volunteer-run community arts organisations located in metropolitan, regional and remote Queensland. They collectively manage an extensive membership of local arts lovers, providing them with unique and responsive services and support. Some LACs have previously sponsored students to attend MAD Camp, or assisted schools in facilitating workshops and performances. Join your Local Arts Council and be part of the growth of regionally driven arts.
