DAY 1

US to Rome

Depart the US on independently arranged

flights to Rome, Italy.

D (IN FLIGHT)

DAY 2

Trastevere/Janiculum

We meet this afternoon at our hotel in the

heart of classic Rome. For our first taste of

the city, we ascend the Janiculum hill where

the fantastic view sweeps across the entire

dome-studded cityscape. Wealthy Renaissance

bankers built themselves suburban palaces,

and we’ll see one of the finest – Villa Farnesina

with its frescoes by Raphael. Then we head

to Trastevere. Once the rough and tumble

outskirts on the “wrong side” of the Tiber, the

neighborhood is now one of Rome’s liveliest

districts. At the church of Santa Maria in

Trastevere, we marvel at its mosaics that still

shimmer with gold. Our welcome dinner tonight

is at an osteria known for its seafood.

D

DAY 3

Ancient Rome/Jewish Ghetto

Today, we dedicate the morning to the grand

ruins of Imperial Rome. We pay a guided visit

to the Colosseum and walk the ancient streets

of the Forum, taking in sites including the

Arch of Constantine and Trajan’s Column. The

Capitoline Museums encapsulate the city’s

history with remarkable art treasures. We see

the circular Temple of Hercules Victor, test

the Bocca della Verità (Mouth of Truth) you

may recognize from the film Roman Holiday,

and visit the Ghetto of Rome, the walled

neighborhood created in 1555 to house the

city’s 2,000 Jews.

DAY 4

Appian Way/Catacombs

of San Callisto/San Giovanni

in Laterano

This morning, we become pedestrians on

the Via Appia Antica, arguably the world’s

Rome for the Ages

MAY 9 – 16, 2015

8 DAYS/7 NIGHTS | $5,700

Rome wears its remarkable age more gracefully than any city on earth. With

the luxury of an entire week, we take our time discovering the treasures of

the Roman Empire as well as the early Christian, Renaissance and Baroque

eras. We also include generous free time for you to explore on your own, shop

and dine your way through Rome. Throughout, Professor Patricia Reilly and

expert local guides share their insights on history, culture and everyday life

to give you an intimate understanding of the Eternal City.

most famous road since 312 B.C. The ancient

pavement leads us to the Catacombs of San

Callisto where 16 popes and thousands of

other Christians were buried. Midday, we stop

for pranzo at a restaurant situated amid the

ruins. Our day also includes Esquiline Hill, site

of Nero’s Golden House; the Basilica of San

Giovanni in Laterano; and the Scala Santa,

the holy staircase that pilgrims still climb on

their knees. Round out the day with time to

wander on your own, or join Professor Reilly to

discover art treasures hidden in several of the

city’s exceptional churches.

B, L

DAY 5

Pantheon/Piazza Navona/

Campo de’ Fiori

The domed Pantheon is perhaps the

best-preserved of all Roman buildings. We pay a

guided visit and then pause for an espresso at

one of our favorite cafes. The neighborhood

is also home to works by Michelangelo and

Caravaggio, which we discover on a leisurely

walk. After the tight network of streets, it’s a

wonderful surprise when Piazza Navona opens

before us – a broad Baroque square with a

Bernini fountain as its centerpiece. Just a few

minutes away, Campo de’ Fiori is one of the

city’s liveliest market squares. The afternoon

is yours, so you can wander the stalls or take

your time winding through the streets, getting

a feel for life in Rome.

B, L

DAY 6

Santa Maria della Vittoria/

Villa Borghese/Spanish Steps

Bernini’s Ecstasy of St. Teresa is a masterpiece

of Baroque art. We’ll see her bathed in eternal

rays of gold at the church of Santa Maria della

Vittoria. Nearby, Villa Borghese is Rome’s

greatest park. Like the modern Romans who

love to stroll in the sculpted gardens, we pay

a leisurely visit. At the end, we wind our way

to the top of the Spanish Steps, one of the

city’s most iconic sites. The afternoon is yours,

and you are perfectly positioned to browse

the exclusive shops on Via Condotti and

Via Veneto. You are also just a few minutes

away from the Trevi Fountain, tucked into a

surprisingly small square not far from the hotel.

B, L

DAY 7

Vatican Museums/Sistine

Chapel/St. Peter’s Basilica

All week, the dome of St. Peter’s has appeared

as a soaring backdrop. This morning, we

enjoy a private tour that reveals the treasures

of the Vatican, including the Sistine Chapel.

Even if you’ve visited St. Peter’s before,

you will appreciate how our expert guides

help you absorb the history, the art and the

iconography. On your last Roman afternoon,

take in Castel Sant’Angelo, the Ara Pacis

Museum with the altar of peace built to honor

Augustus Caesar, or claim a sunny table on a

city square and watch the world go by. We all

come back together this evening for a farewell

dinner.

B, D

DAY 8

Rome/US

After breakfast, you transfer independently to

the Rome airport for flights back to the U.S.

College, and a B.A. in History of Art at University of California, Santa Cruz.
