Friendship Centre Prime time is a bi-monthly publication that includes details about Town of St. Marys Senior Services programs and events. It also highlights the accomplishments of our team members and volunteers. Anyone can pick-up a copy at the Friendship Centre or read it online at

Who we are

Senior Services is a department of the Town of St. Marys which offers two programs: The Friendship Centre and Home Support Services. The Home Support Services program strives to promote wellness and quality of life among seniors, people recovering from illness or injury and people with varying abilities. The Friendship Centre embraces a holistic approach in serving the needs of adults through various social, education and recreational programs. These programs are funded in part by the Southwest LHIN, Ontario Seniors’ Secretariat, Town of St. Marys, client fees, membership fees, fundraising and donations.

Friendship Centre Memberships

Membership fees help to offset some of the costs of running the centre such as heat, hydro, equipment, and program supplies. A member of the Friendship Centre may benefit in the following ways:

• A place to feel like you belong

• A place to meet new people, see old friends • An opportunity to learn new skills, talents and

expand your leisure activity

• 25% savings on most programs and trips • Coupons to get you started at the Centre • Access to free or low fee programs

Who can become a Member

Individuals ages 50+ and or persons of varying abilities.

What does it cost? $45 per year

When does my membership expire?

Memberships expire one year from the date of purchase. Purchase membership ONLINE.

General Information

Access to the Friendship Centre

To support current gather restrictions and the need to keep our community safe, the Friendship Centre’s doors will remain shut for walk in traffic. Access for registered programs will be granted 10 minutes prior to the start of each program.

The Friendship Centre has installed a door bell at our main entrance of the facility (labelled C) for anyone looking to make a drop off or pick up. Please note that a drop box is available for anyone wishing to make a delivery, and a pick up box will be available Mon-Fri between 8:00a.m. and 4:30

Rzone and Inclusiveness

Respect and Responsibility

Rzone is a program requiring all persons wishing to visit or use any Town of St. Marys recreation facility or

program to respect others and take responsibility in help-ing the Town maintain a positive environment. The “R” in Rzone stands for Respect and Responsibility. Respect for yourself, Respect for others, and Responsibility for your actions. The Rzone is first and foremost a proactive education and awareness strategy to promote respectful and responsible behaviour at recreation facilities. The Rzone program applies to all community organizations and individuals using Town of St. Marys recreational facilities. The Rzone enforces a set of expectations around inappropriate behaviour, violence and vandalism for participants and the general public. To report an Rzone incident, speak with staff or the community organization involved. For more details see the Rzone brochure, or speak with Town of St. Marys staff.

Inclusiveness

The Senior Services department of the Town of

St. Marys is proactively working toward inclusiveness in all of our programs and services. Clients and participants recovering from injuries, chronic conditions and with varying mental or physical abilities have equal access to programs and services and are given the same

opportunities and resources, as all clients and participants.

Friendship Centre Code of Conduct

The Senior Services Department adheres to the Human Rights Code which states that “every person” has the right to equal treatment with respect to services, goods and facilities, without discrimination because of race, ancestry, place of origin, colour, ethnic origin, citizenship, creed, sex, sexual orientation, age, martial status, family status or varying ability.

Registration is now required for ALL programs hosted by the Friendship Centre and Home Support Services. Programs are being operated in accordance with current local and provincial COVID -19 guidelines. Participants must register in advance to ensure capacity limits are maintained, and screen for each program to facilitate contact tracing.

Registration is available online (www.townofstmarys.com) or by phone (519-284-3272). At present, programs that support physical distancing and support COVID -19 guidelines will return in the Friendship Centre ‘s first step in reopening. Currently, we are open for the programs, the facility will be closed for walk in traffic.

Registering Online: https://townofstmarys.maxgalaxycanada.net/Home.aspx. Create an account or login. Complete account details (select OPT in, to receive emails about future programs and services.) Add family members if you need too. Head to Registration Menu tab, activity registration, Seniors Programs, and browse programs. The green registration button indicates program is available to register. Select attending participant, accept terms of waiver and select fee if applicable, add to cart and proceed to check out if finished. If you are unable to attend a program that you are registered for, you must cancel by calling the Friendship Centre. Ample notice is much appreciated.

Volunteering is the best way to give back to your community. From staying connected over the telephone to people who are socially isolated, or making deliveries safely and directly to people in their homes, volunteering goes a long way with Senior Services in St. Marys. The Community Wellness Program is continuing for the forsee-able future. It offers resources and services to help people cope with the challenges of living through the COVID-19 (coronavi-rus) pandemic. One of the best things you can do to prevent the spread of COVID-19 is to stay home as much as possible. This means avoiding non-essential trips to places like the grocery store and pharmacy, and spending time away from other people. This program offers a range of services to help people cope with the challenges of living through this pandemic, including:

• Hot and frozen meal delivery • Food Hamper deliveries

• Subsidy support for food and meal delivery and masks • Delivery of groceries, medication and other essentials • Telephone reassurance and social connection calls • Virtual and Telephone recreation programming

• Christmas Connection Call program, see details on the back page!

Home Support Services strives to enhance the quality of life of seniors, people recovering from illness or injury, and people with varying abilities by providing services to assist them in living independently. Call 519-284-3272 to start any of these programs. No referral or membership needed. When you register, a Huron Perth Community Services Coordinator will phone you to complete the process. This service will allow you to call one phone number for multiple supports: 1-844-482-7800.

Community Dining at Home

We are excited to offer you the new Community Dining program. Hot take out meals made by a local restaurant, delivered right to your home. They will be

delivered on either Tuesday or Thursday evenings. Call the Friendship centre to register.

Footcare Clinics

Improper foot care can have many affects on your overall health. If nail care is a challenge for you—consider foot care provided by a registered professional. Clinics are offered on a weekly basis. You will need to register for this service.

Meals on Wheels

Hot and nutritious full course meals are delivered to your door by local volunteers five days a week. Meals consist of a main course, soup or salad and dessert. For convenience, frozen entrées, soups and desserts are available for pick up or delivery. The Friendship Centre has a wide of variety of frozen entrees in stock, however to ensure we can provide you with all of your favorite meals for the holiday season please be sure to place your frozen meal order by

December 9th.

Shopping Services

Staff and volunteers are available to help you complete your shopping and weekly errands. The Shopping program has been modified during COVID- 19 to help you stay safe from the comfort of your own home. Volunteers support by completing weekly grocery shops, staff support by offering online

ordering and arranging for grocery pick up and drop off. Staff work with each individual to determine the best service and arrange payment options.

Telephone Reassurance

Staying connected is extremely important to one’s health and wellbeing. Sign up for daily or weekly social or check in calls provided by Volunteers. Telephone Reassurance offers a great opportunity to make a new friend and stay connected with others when we are supposed to be staying apart.

Wellness Programs

Wellness programs consist of exercise and falls prevention classes, educational presentions and health screening. Falls prevention classes are a free program funded by the LHIN. All physical fitness programs should be approved by your doctor. Blood Pressure Clinics OPEN

Home Support Services will be offering free blood pressure checks on Monday Jan 18,and Jan 25. Blood Pressure Clinics will be offered by appointment only. Appointments will be scheduled between 10 am and 2 pm in the Friendship Centre. Call to book an appointment.

Support Services During the Holidays

The Friendship Centre office will be closed on December 24 at 12pm and will re-open on January 4th. Hot and

Frozen Meals on Wheels as well as shopping services will still be available for those in need. Please con-tact the office at 519-284-3272 and leave a message.

Messages will be retreived daily Monday to Friday between 9am and 4pm. Hot meals service will continue

as normal with no delivary on December 25. To set up service prior to the holiday season plesae contact Jenny or Kim at 519-284-3272.

Stressed and need to calm yourself? Come join us. This guided practice could increase a more calming outlook. This program is offered face to face or on ZOOM, you choose.

Leisure Programs

Virtual Scrapbooking FREE A scrapbooking space that fosters creativity, experiment, and shared ideas. Join like minded people as they work on their latest scrapbooking or card making creations. We will be meeting virtually on Zoom! You must register to get the zoom link.

Carpet Bowling Members: $8 Enjoy this variation on traditional lawn bowling, while visiting with others from a distance, wearing a mask. Sign up for our new session play.

Legend

(T)- Telephone programs are a great way for people to con-nect with others from the comfort of their home, similar to the old fashioned party line! Detailed telephone program instruc-tions are on the other side of the calendar. You can call in with a regular phone, or connect with your computer or tablet for these programs.

(Z)- Zoom programs do require registration in order for par-ticipants to recieve the correct zoom link. Zoom is a great way for groups to connect over video conferencing. To register please call the Friendship Centre at 519-284-3272, or email friends@town.stmarys.on.ca.

(T)- Telephone programs are a great way for people to con-nect with others from the comfort of their home, similar to the old fashioned party line! Detailed telephone program instruc-tions are on the other side of the calendar. You can call in with a regular phone, or connect with your computer or tablet for these programs.

(Z)- Zoom programs do require registration in order for par-ticipants to recieve the correct zoom link. Zoom is a great way for groups to connect over video conferencing. To register please call the Friendship Centre at 519-284-3272, or email friends@town.stmarys.on.ca.

(FC)- The Friendship Centre is open for limited registered programs as we start our safe and gradual reopening. Please find out what entrance to use when attending your program at the Friendship Centre.
