After School Procedures
1. Be on time. After school begins at 3:10 p.m., unless otherwise stated.
2. Sign in when you enter the room. There will be a sign-in sheet there for you to write your name, and “why you are there”. Whether it’s to get extra help, make up an absence, make up a zero (or zeros), or whatever, be specific.
3. Required Extra Help Sessions with me after school (vs. a writing assignment … see “note” at the end of this paper):
a) All required extra help sessions begin at 3:10. Don’t come late or leave early. If you arrive after 3:10, then you’ve missed your make-up time.
b) To make up a homework zero, it’s 20 minutes plus the assignment. Remember, simply staying after school does NOT remove a homework zero, you must turn in the missed work in order to remove the zero.
c) To make up any other class participation zero, it’s 20 minutes as well.
d) To make up a tardy, you must serve 20 minutes to avoid a courtesy cut. More on tardies later in this document.
e) For an extra credit notebook, it’s 20 minutes plus the extra credit notebook. f) To make up an NTI notebook, it’s 30 min. plus the original notebook.
g) Misbehavior sessions are 30 minutes or a courtesy cut. On your fifth red mark in the grade book, you’ll receive a 1 in courtesy for the nine weeks, regardless of any previous after school time served, unless your parent comes in for a parent conference.
h) Class participation sessions are 20 minutes per “mark”. For every 20 minutes you serve, I will erase one mark against your class participation grade. More on absences later in this document.
i) Class cuts are a required 40-minute session (to avoid a 1 in courtesy and a possible referral), plus whatever additional time you choose to serve.
ALL work MUST be turned in at the end of the session or else (a) the class participation “mark” will remain, (b) the zero will not be removed, (c) the NTI will remain in the grade book, or (d) the extra credit will not be awarded. All work must be complete for credit, and there is NO extension of time. I suggest that if you owe me work, that you have it done before you come after school, to be certain that it is complete by the end of the session when it is due.
4. Be sure to have your math book with you after school, especially for make-up exams.
5. While in the room, I expect you to work, NOT socialize. Come to my desk to ask me questions, work together at your seats, or work at the board, but make it a productive math time.
6. Sign out. If you are making up class participation time for instance, and don’t sign out, I won’t know how much time you served, and therefore how much credit to award you. Even if you’re just there for tutoring, check with me first, sign out, and then you may leave. DO NOT leave the room without checking with me first.
7. When you sign out, do NOT place a check in the final column. That column is for ME to check, after I go to my grade book and remove your zero or fix whatever you came in for. If you place a check in that column, I’ll think I already fixed my grade book, and removing your zero (or whatever I need to do) will likely be overlooked.
8. Make sure your ride knows when to pick you up, so you don’t have to wait for him or her. Make sure you have a cell phone to communicate with whoever is picking you up.

FOURTH UNSATISFACTORY TARDY: an F in class participation and a 1 in
courtesy for the nine weeks IF you don’t serve a mandatory 40-minute session of required time with me after school.
FIFTH UNSATISFACTORY TARDY: an automatic F in class participation and a 1 in courtesy for the nine weeks, regardless of any previous time served after school.
SIXTH TARDY AND EVERY TARDY THEREAFTER: A REFERRAL to the administration.
Unsatisfactory Tardies of 45 or more minutes:
45 – 59:59 min yes 4 marks 20 min/mark
60 – 74:59 min yes 5 marks 20 min/mark
Why are there zeros in the “Correctional Session” column? Because, you are not required to serve most sessions after school if you don’t want to or if you are unable to; most after school sessions are optional, with the exception of: your fourth tardy, truancy, and misbehavior. I make myself available after school in order to help you. If you choose not to serve any time to raise your grade, that’s up to you.
If you serve any of the listed sessions (other than the 0-minute one), the “courtesy cut” is automatically removed. However, the number of “marks” that are removed depends on the amount of time you serve.
Note: after your fourth unsatisfactory tardy, you must serve 40-minutes to avoid an F in class participation and a 1 in courtesy. The result of a fifth tardy is an automatic F in class participation and a 1 in courtesy for the nine weeks, regardless of any previous time served. On your sixth tardy and every tardy thereafter, I will be forced to notify the administration.
Also: If you miss more than half of the class, the class participation marks increase from three to six depending how late you arrive.
Missing the Entire First Block:
Missing the entire first block because you were late to school, for whatever reason, is considered TRUANCY. Missing first block because you woke up late, you missed the bus, your ride didn’t pick you up, or whatever, is SKIPPING. Unless you can produce a satisfactory admit from the attendance office, that missed class is considered a CLASS CUT, which is automatically six marks against your class participation grade, a 1 in courtesy, and a possible referral, if you don’t serve a mandatory 40-minute session after school.
A Few Examples:
Example 1: Let’s say you have two unsatisfactory absences and one satisfactory absence, with no time made up. That would equal four marks for each unsatisfactory absence and two marks for one satisfactory absence. 4+4+2=10. Ten marks = a 50% F for class participation.
What if you serve a 40-minute session on the first available after school day? Since every 20-minute session erases one mark, this would leave you with eight marks. Eight marks is a 60% D-.
Note: Any combination of 20 or more marks against your class participation grade is an NTI.
Example 2: What if you are a few seconds tardy on Monday and you have an unsatisfactory absence on Wednesday? You will receive a courtesy cut for the tardy, and if the four marks for having an unsatisfactory absence are your only marks, your class participation grade will drop from an A+ to a B-. If you serve 20 minutes after school, your class participation grade will go up to a B. If you serve 40 minutes, you’ll go back up to an A-. If you serve 60 minutes (40+20), that will raise the unsatisfactory absence up to an A- and erase the tardy, raising your courtesy grade back up as well. Yes, you would have to serve two consecutive after school days of 40 and 20 minutes respectively.
Remember what it says in your Class Policies: “Zeros and/or missed class participation time may be made up after school, but must be made up within one week of the original infraction date.” That is true unless you stay, and there’s still MORE time to be made up. Then your time after school must continue on the next after school day, and the next, and the next, until everything is made up. It also says, “everything must be made up by the end of the nine weeks (i.e. there’s no ‘rolling over’ to the next nine weeks).” This is true. The only time you cannot continue your after school time the following week is when we’re switching from one nine weeks to another. You would just have to suffer the consequences and accept the lower grade(s), or whatever the case may be. How could you avoid this whole situation? Don’t commit multiple infractions in the last week or last couple weeks of a nine week grading period.
Also, if you have anything to make up: zeros, NTI notebooks, extra credit notebooks, class participation, tardies, misbehavior, or truancies, and you don’t stay at all within one week of the original infraction date, then you’ve missed your opportunity to clear your record. However, if you have a legitimate excuse for missing your session, I would need a signed note from either your parent or doctor explaining the situation. Then, after I call home to verify the note, we will reschedule your after school stay for the following week (unless it was the end of a nine weeks marking period).
To reiterate: You must begin making up time for whatever infraction you commit within one week. You cannot make up time for an infraction any time you please; making up time MUST begin within one week or you’ve missed the opportunity to make it up.
Additionally, if you owe me multiple sessions after school, they must all be consecutive after school dates. Once you begin making up time, you must make up all time (that may be made up) on consecutive after school days.
Note: If it is impossible for you to serve an extra help session with me after school, I may give you a writing assignment instead of serving time. Make your request to write instead of serve time, and then we’ll discuss exactly what it is that you would have to write.
Be sure to communicate any concerns or confusion you may have about any of the above policies with me, and I’ll be happy to help you.
