BRITAIN’S FASTEST-GROWING PRIVATE COMPANIES REVEALED

Published today, the 19

th

annual

Sunday Times Virgin Fast Track 100

league table ranks Britain’s private

companies with the fastest-growing sales.

The 100 companies, which include well-known names such as restaurant group

Bill’s

, fashion retailer

Missguided

, premium cycling brand

Rapha

, brewery

BrewDog

, and retailer

Oak Furniture Land

, grew their

sales over the last three years by an average of 65% a year to a total of £3.7bn. Together they employ 19,500

staff, having added 13,500 jobs over the period.

One fifth of the companies on the league table were founded by serial entrepreneurs, who have started at

least one other business. They include No 1 company

Greentech Distribution

, a mobile phone recycler and

distributor which has ridden the boom in smartphones to grow sales by an average of 248% a year to £48.9m

in 2015.

A fifth are thriving under family leadership, including gourmet sausage producer

Heck! Food

, founded by

husband-and-wife team, Andrew and Debbie Keeble, who run the business with three of their children.

The league table and awards programme is sponsored by

Virgin

,

Barclays

,

BDO

and

BGF

, and is

compiled by

Fast Track

, the Oxford-based research and networking events company.

Sir Richard Branson of Virgin, the title sponsor for all 19 years, commented:

“This year’s Fast Track 100 is packed full of entrepreneurs and family businesses tackling many different

challenges head-on and thriving thanks to their team spirit and togetherness. Entrepreneurship and family

values are at the heart of everything we do at Virgin. Like many on the Fast Track 100, we’ve turned a family

business into a business family. Working with family works."

KEY FINDINGS OF THIS YEAR’S LEAGUE TABLE

Serial entrepreneurs:

The 20 companies on the league table founded by serial entrepreneurs include

gourmet burger group

Byron

, which Tom Byng started in 2007 after founding London restaurant Zucca.

Andrew Malcher and Jim Coleman founded and sold two businesses before investing £250,000 to start

shopping channel

High Street TV

in 2008.

Founders and their families:

Despite the challenges of parents, siblings and couples working together, 18

companies have thrived under family leadership. Footwear designer

Butterfly Twists

was set up by

brothers Emmanuel and Frank Eribo, together with two friends, and fruit snack manufacturer

Bear & Urban

Fruit

was founded by husband-and-wife team Andrew and Hayley Gait-Golding.

Profitability:

Combined operating profits of the 100 companies were £342m in 2014/15, up from £38m in

2011/12. Over half of the companies (53) increased their profit margins over the last three years to a healthy

average of 11%. Customer services provider

Huntswood

had the highest operating profits at £44m in 2014.

External capital:

Thirty-six companies have raised external capital, whether from private equity/venture

capital firms, business angels, or corporate investors. Twenty of these have sold minority stakes to external

investors. For example ATM maintenance services provider

Cennox

raised £5m growth capital from BGF.

International activity:

Almost half (48) of the companies have expanded overseas to boost revenue

growth, including

Tangle Teezer

, which ships its de-tangling hairbrushes to customers in 110 countries, and

homeware manufacturer

Designer Habitat

, which generates a third of its £21.4m sales overseas from

markets including America.

Manufacturing:

Twenty-five companies are engaged in manufacturing, either directly or indirectly (by

outsourcing to third parties). Examples include

Gtech

, which designs cordless vacuums, taking on

established brands like Dyson, Vax and Hoover, and

Vegware

, which makes compostable products from

plant-based materials such as sugar cane.

Food and drink innovation:

There are 18 food and drink companies, and many have developed distinct

products and services to stand out in this highly competitive sector. Gourmet burger group

Byron

has

differentiated itself through its individually styled branches, and online food retailer

Graze.com

has

developed more than 1,000 snack recipes since launch in 2007.

(3)

Regions:

The majority of companies are headquartered in London (39) and the southeast (18). Of the

remainder, 11 are in the northeast and Yorkshire, eight in the northwest, seven in the Midlands, six in the

southwest, five in Scotland, four in the East, and two in Wales.

The full league table will be published as an 8-page broadsheet supplement with the business section of

The Sunday Times

on 6 December, both in print and in the digital edition, and on

www.fasttrack.co.uk

.

See notes for editors for the full league table

THE FAST TRACK ONES TO WATCH

The Fast Track ‘Ones to Watch’ features 10 promising companies that did not meet the criteria of the league

table but have achieved strong sales growth and merit special recognition.

This year’s Ones to Watch companies include gluten-free food manufacturer

Genius

, whose sales rose

41% to £42m last year after it acquired the Free From bakery brand for £21.7m in 2013. The list also

includes

Bounce

, which runs two London venues combining table tennis with cocktail bars and food.

Co-founded by serial entrepreneur Adam Breedon in 2012, the firm generated £5m sales in its first year, and

now plans to launch in the US.

Notes for editors

Fast Track

has published league tables of top-performing private companies with

The Sunday Times

for

the past 19 years. Its invitation-only dinners provide a valuable opportunity for entrepreneurs to network and

meet its sponsors. The company was founded and is run by Dr Hamish Stevenson, who also holds an

associate fellowship at Green Templeton College, Oxford University.

Previous Fast Track 100 success stories include chip designer

ARM

, which featured on the first league table

19 years ago with sales of £17m, floated in 1998 and is now valued at £15.8bn. Discount retailer

B&M

Retail

, which featured in 2009 with sales of £256m, floated in June 2014 and is now worth £3.2bn.

League table criteria:

Companies had to be registered in the UK and be independent, unquoted and ultimate holding companies.

Sales growth was measured by compound annual growth rate (CAGR) over the latest three financial years.

A minimum of 25 weeks’ trading in their base and latest years was required. For accounting periods not

equal to a year, financials have been presented on an annual basis.

Annualised sales had to exceed £250,000 in the base year and not show a drop from the penultimate to the

latest year, where total sales had to exceed £5m. Firms had to have 10 or more employees, and make

operating profit of at least £500,000 in their latest available accounts. Recruitment firms and media agencies

are required to have gross profits of at least £5m in their latest available accounts. Sales for recruitment

(4)

firms are the total amount invoiced to clients; media agencies’ sales are net of advertising spend on behalf

of clients.

Excluded companies include technology firms (covered by our sister league table, Tech Track 100), LLPs,

pure property and financial trading companies, and companies with turnover of £500m or greater.

The research was carried out by Fast Track between August and November. The majority of companies

were interviewed by telephone or in person by the Fast Track team.
