PERFORMANCE OF SMALL GRAIN VARIETIES IN NORTH CAROLINA John C. Rice, E. L. Jones, G. C. Oliver, Ray Adams

l /

INTRODUCTION

The Official Variety Test on Small Grain varieties in North Carolina is conducted annually by locating evaluation trials throughout the small grain producing area of the state. These tests are conducted to determine the value and suitability of commercially available and prospective varieties of wheat, oats and barley for planting in North Carolina. The results of these tests are intended to aid the growers and agricultural workers in the selection of a variety best suited for their particular area of the state or region.

In North Carolina the wheat production for the 1969-70 season is expected to be 8,316,000 bushels. This production will be harvested from 227,000 acres estimated to be approximately the same as the previous season's acreage. The North Carolina production for the current season is expected to be the same as the 1968-69 production. For 1970, the state average yield for wheat is estimated to be 42 bushels per acre

equal to the previous yield of 1969.

(4)

4

The North Carolina acreage of oats planted for 1969-70 and spring planted oats in 1970 totaled 265,000 acres. This acreage was five percent above the 257,000 acres planted for the 1969 crop.

Barley production for 1969 was 2,989,000 bushels and the 1969-70 crop was planted on 73,000 acres.

Information on varietal performance is presented from six test locations in the state, three in the Piedmo'nt and three in the Coastal Plain Area. In comparing the performance of varieties, data from the area which most nearly represents the growers' conditions should be used. Seasonal conditions differ from year to year; therefore, a variety which looks superior for one year may not be consistently good, hence, varie-ties should be evaluated on the basis of performance over several years. Depending upon the release date of the entry, data are presented for performance from one to five years. All available

Cultural Practices

Cultural practices, such as seed bed preparation, date of planting, fertilization and topdressing were in accord with good farming practices and were uniform for all entries at a given location, Table 1. Several months prior to planting each test location, soil samples were obtained for the test field and fertilizer requirements made in accordance with the soil analysis report. Lime was applied, if needed, to adjust the pH to a desirable level for small grain production.

Starting in 1969 all tests were planted with cone-type, tractor-mounted, spring-loaded disc equipment. The disc allowed for more accurate seeding in areas with stubble or organic matter on the soil surface. The seeding rate was one gram per foot of row. The rows were spaced one foot apart. Each plot consisted of seven rows, 15 feet long with the two out-side rows used as borders. The border rows were removed prior to harvest and only the five center rows were harvested. The date of planting and fertilization at planting is shown in Table 1 for each test location.

(8)

8

was used to more nearly simulate the conditions under which these varieties would be harvested on farms and it appears to give very satisfactory results.

Seasonal Conditions

With six locations for the 1969-70 Small Grain Official Variety Test, the seasonal conditions were generally conducive for good growth and high yields. October, usually one of the driest months in North Carolina, was drier than average. There was general rain the first two or three days of October and very little thereafter. The average temperatures for the month of October were close to normal but there was considerable range from the warmest to the coolest recorded. Wilmington reached 870 on the 20th, a new record high for so late in the season and four days later Raleigh-Durham dropped to a 260, a new

record low for so early in the Fall. In general, the temperature the first half of the month was normal while the last half was often colder than normal.

December 1969 averaged reasonably close to normal with the average temperature for the month ranging from one to four degrees below normal at the various weather stations. A good example of the steady but not severe cold was at Wilmington where freezing weather occurred on sixteen of the thirty-one days but the lowest of the month was only 230

• On the

(9)

as Raleigh and Oxford. In February the temperatures averaged below normal but they were less severe than in January. Precipitation in February was average for both the Piedmont and Coastal Plain Areas. The whole winter season of 1969-70 was consistently cold having average temperature among the lowest on record for a similar period.

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

The performance of the 1970 tests along with the previous four years are presented by crop and area in a tabular form in this report. Since the genetic expression of a variety is influenced greatly by the environment, it is best to have several years' data from which to draw conclusions. For example, if a variety appeared in the two-year average but not in the three-year average, then it must be compared only within the two years and not with the data in the three-year average since it is possible that the third year could have been extremely good or poor and not comparable.

The 1970 data presented in this report have been analyzed statis-tically and the least significant difference (L.S.D.), in terms of bushels per acre and pounds per bushel is given. Unless the difference between two varieties is greater than the L.S.D., the varieties should not be considered as being any different statistically.

Barley

Table 5 shows the performance of barley in the Piedmont. The yields varied from a high of 102.3 bushels per acre for the variety Harrison to 76.0 bushels for the variety, Colonial 2, for the 1970 season. A five-year average also showed the variety, Keowee, to have the highest yield at 82.2 bushels per acre.

(11)

Keowee was very close with a 47.8 average for five years. All test weights were higher for the 1970 season than for the 1969 season.

In the Coastal Plain Area, Table 6, shows the difference in yield between varieties. The varieties, Keowee and Colonial 2, yielded higher than other entries with an average of 74.4 and 73.6 bushels per acre, respectively for the 1970 season. The Harrison variety had the highest test weight with an average of 52.2 pounds per bushel. Most test weight data was higher than for the 1969 season.

Over the five-year average, the variety Keowee had the highest yield at 79.3 bushels per acre and the highest test weight with an average of 47.6 pounds per bushel.

Oats

The data from the oat trials in the Piedmont are presented in Table 7. The yields for 1970 were somewhat higher than in 1969 with only one variety yielding less than 100 bushels per acre. Va. 65-32-21 was the highest yielding with an average of 139.1 bushels per acre. The test weights were much higher with Va. 65-32-21 having a top of

39.1 pounds per bushel.

Coker 242 had the highest five-year yield with 108.9 bushels per acre while Roanoke and Coker 242 had the highest test weights of 36.3

and 36.2 pounds per bushel, respectively.

(12)

12

of 39.6 pounds per bushel. Over a five-year average, Carolee and Coker 242 had the highest yield of 98.9 and Coker 242 had the highest test weight

of 37.1.

Wheat

Table 9 shows the data on the wheat trials in the Piedmont. The experimental line, NC 7, had the highest yield with 87.5 bushels per acre. Coker 68-15, with an average of 59.8 pounds per bushel, had the highest test weight.

Over a five-year period, Blueboy had the highest yield of 69.6 and Knox 62 had the highest test weight of 59.5 pounds per bushel.

The Coastal Plain data are presented in Table 10. NC 7 led the test with an average of 51.0 bushels per acre and was the only line to exceed 50 bushels per acre. Coker 68-15 had the best test weight with 63.4 and all test weight data were above the 1969 season.

Blueboy and Coker 65-20 were the only two varieties tested for five years. Blueboy had an average of 61.0 bushels per acre and Coker 65-20 had an average test weight of 57.2 pounds per bushel.

Milling Tests

Grain from the wheat entries at all locations was obtained for

milling tests. In 1969 samples of seed for each entry from the three

Piedmont locations were composited and thoroughly mixed. Subsamples

were secured, coded and submitted to individual commercial wheat

labor-atories for analyses. The same procedure was followed for wheat entries

from the three Coastal Plain Locations. Results of these milling tests

are given in Tables 12 and 13 for wheat analysis for percent protein,

test weight, percent flour yield and percent moisture. Flour analysis

data includes percent moisture, percent protein and ash for all entries.

This method used in milling the entries was the American Association

of Cereal Chemists Method 26-20; and the data was supplied by two
