people can relax and share good times together. For those reasons, The Summer School this year will be leaded by an architect and an artist chosen by GAMeC – GAMeC - Galleria d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea di Bergamo.

SUMMER SCHOOL

The Summer School addresses the theme of the design of contemporary urban landscape with a multidisciplinary and international approach. Students from all over the world and from diverse disciplines (architects, designers, artists, landscape architects, agronomists, botanists, photographers, film-makers) are called upon to collaborate in the development of ideas, in the construction of strategies of a project, in the presentation of work, and in the study of the techniques to be applied, following a hands-on system of learning. The design of contemporary public space can only be a result of teamwork; each individual’s expertise contributes towards solving specific problems. This is a different approach from that of an issue that is addressed at different levels with different methodologies.

In keeping with this logic, the Summer School team will study the complexity of the design of public space together with two international personalities. These two personalities – a landscape architect and an environmental artist – will be visiting professors, chosen with the aim of maintaining an all-round vision of the project in hand. Each year, the Summer School will choose a fresh pair of visiting professors. The professors will work together with the students to design the landscaping of Piazza Vecchia as Piazza Verde, a transformation that takes place every September, following the yearly tradition I Maestri del Paesaggio.

SUMMER SCHOOL _ special edition 2014-2015

There will be a special, inaugural edition of the Summer School this year. The outcome of this special edition will be visible at the Expo 2015 “Feeding the Planet. Energy for life” in Bergamo and in Milan.

invited the Summer School to design and create, for summer 2015, two landscapes that will combine with each other thematically:

The first will be in Piazza Vecchia, Bergamo (home of the Summer School, with a new group every year),

The second will be at the EXPO, at the Piazza Città di Lombardia in Milan (at the entrance to the Lombardy Region headquarters skyscraper), a public area that represents Milan’s contemporary culture.

Both projects will be worked on and developed in the Summer School of 2014, from the 8thto the 21st of September, in Bergamo, but will be constructed in the summer of 2015, and will form part of the events of Expo 2015.

These two projects, with their intertwining themes, will nonetheless contrast each other: two city squares in places very different from each other – different in terms of history, culture, space and materials; one, Piazza Vecchia, cultural centre of Bergamo Alta, a historical place rich with memories; the other, Piazza Città di Lombardia, at the heart of the Lombardy Region’s skyscraper, created out of modern, man-made materials.
