A Portuguese fort overlooking the Sinquerim Beach and the Arabian Sea, Fort Aguada was constructed in 1613 and since then it has become a prominent landmark or a reference point for ships visiting the Goan shores from Europe.

Located in the capital city of Panjim, the Goa State Museum houses artifacts pertaining to its golden and bygone history. Soaring above the Chapora River in Bardez, the Chapora Fort though in ruins, is an intriguing place of visit. The stronghold has witnessed the passage of many hands from Portuguese to Marathas. In the recent years, it shot to prominence after the Bollywood movie Dil Chahta Hai was shot here.

The structure as it stands today belongs to the 18th Century. Mostly in shambles, you will find red laterite stone walls, a gate, bastions with cylinder-shaped turrets, some barracks and bushes. The Cabo de Rama Fort is one of the oldest in the state. Positioned in Canacona, it was formed before the arrival of British. Legend has it that this is the very place where Lord Rama along with Sita sought refuge at the time of his exile from Ayodhya. The drive to the fortress is a pictorial one. Once at the top, you can soak in the sight of crystal waters fringed by sandy charms and arching palm grooves. Inside the fort is the well-retained church of Santo Antonio, where devotees still come to.

One of the most famous and striking monuments in Goa, Dona Paula is a monument that has been erected to honour the great baroness Paula Amaral Antonio de Souto Maior, who was the daughter of the Portuguese Viceroy. As she arrived with her family to Goa, she made various changes and charities that brought about reforms in the town. The memorial was erected in her memory. The statue has various legends attached to it, while some say it represents young and old Mother India, the others say that it was a statue sculpted by Dona Paula herself.

The area is now amongst the most affluent in Goa and is truly charming and pleasant. The monument overlooks the sea, which makes up for its perfect location.

Located at about 21km from Panjai and 26km from Madgaon, The Mangueshi Temple is one of Goa’s oldest and most prominent landmarks. Highly revered by the locals, entering into this temple constitutes following a traditional dress code. The temple has an interesting history as it was here that the local Bramhins hid the Mangesh Linga after the Portuguese started forcible conversions in the village.

One of the most famous landmarks of Goa, Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception Church in Panjim was built by the Portuguese in 1541 as a chapel. A fine example of Baroque architecture combined with Indian sensibilities. The location of the church in Panaji, makes it even more beautiful and stunning as it is surrounded by the municipal gardens. It was built for the sailors who disembarked here, after a long sail from Lisbon, Portugal as it was the first port before goint inland into older Goa. Although the church spells grandeur from its façade, the interiors are fairly simple with optimal use of colour. During the Festival of Our Lady Of The Immaculate Conception, the church decks up in lights and decorations and looks even more beautiful! The festival is held on March 8 every year and is followed by a fair!
