Eating for Weight Loss

Presented by Office of Nutrition Services

The Eating for Weight Loss presentation will include an interactive cooking demonstration on how to make healthy and delicious meals that may assist in weight loss without compromising taste. We will discuss many tips and tricks to use in cooking that will help load up on nutrients while keeping dishes healthy and lean.

Supermarket Shopping for Health

The Supermarket Shopping for Health presentation will provide participants with knowledge on how to navigate the grocery store while making healthy choices and avoiding marketing traps. We will discuss how to create a shopping list and what tools are available to grocery shop efficiently.

Presenter: Lauren Soli

Providing effective performance feedback is an important part of a manager’s role. This session actively engages participants in “hands on” activities to help them develop the necessary skills to effectively conduct performance discussions. The class will also cover the principles and components of performance feedback, as well as strategies for managing performance discussions.

Presenter: Dr. Chiara Hensley

This session is designed especially for faculty, administrators, and support staff to inform them about the role of the University Ombuds and the services provided by the Office of the Ombuds. Topics

explored include a quick review of EMU policies and procedures, creating policy supported course syllabi and consistent operational practice, addressing student grade grievances at the informal level, student notification processes, and communication protocol, using the Student Handbook & Policy Guide, and effective communication and resolution of student complaints. This session promises to be an informative and interactive lunch hour!

*Lominger Card Sort

Tuesday, January 13 • 9:00 a.m.-11:00 a.m. 100 McKenny Hall

Participants will take a self-assessment using the Lominger Leadership Architect Suite. The Leadership Architect is a career success profile that helps identify competencies of strength and weakness that are likely contributing to the success or struggles in a current position. Attendees will learn what competencies they will need to develop to be successful in the next step of their career or what career stallers may be blocking them from moving up the ranks. This is a must attend session for supervisors moving into a new role.

*Performance Management

Wednesday, January 21 • 10:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. 100 McKenny Hall

This interactive program educates supervisors on the full performance management lifecycle, including goal setting, ongoing performance management, coaching and developing employees, providing feedback, as well as supervisory responsibilities during the

performance evaluation process. Using video scenarios, examples and case studies participents will learn a model to use to provide feedback in performance related discussions.

*Understanding FMLA, ADA, and Workers Compensation and Your Responsibilities as a Supervisor

Thursday, February 19 • 1:00 p.m.-3:00 p.m. 100 McKenny Hall

In this interactive workshop, those with supervisory responsibilities will learn more about the interplay between three important workplace laws: Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) and Workers’ Compensation (WC). Get your questions answered and better understand your role in assisting EMU to comply with the provisions of ADA, FMLA and WC.

2014-15 SUPERVISORY TRAINING SERIES

The Supervisory Training Series consists of seven required and two optional courses that are highly recommended for any new or seasoned manager/ supervisor. You will be exposed to an overview of “need to know” topics to help you become a more effective supervisor as well learn about specific EMU policies, procedures, and compliance requirements that are essential in your role. In order to receive certificate of completion for the program, you must attend all required courses.

Gain techniques and strategies for handling crucial conversations and confrontations as well as methods and ideas to deal with situations involving difficult people and/or circumstances.

*Employee/Labor Relations - An Overview of the Supervisor’s Role

Tuesday, March 3 • 9:00 a.m.-11:00 a.m. 100 McKenny Hall

This session provides basic information related to the supervisor’s role in correcting poor performance, conducting investigations and disciplinary conferences and ensuring the due process rights of employees.

*Supervisory Compliance Bootcamp

Wednesday, March 11 • 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. 100 McKenny Hall

This course develops an understanding for supervisors of legislation, policy and compliance issues affecting today’s workplace, as well as the importance of supervisor responsibilities to avoid litigation landmines. Key legal scenarios cover topics such as Sexual Harassment, Title IX, Americans with Disabilities Act, Family and Medical Leave Act, as well as pertinent laws concerning discrimination and relevant EMU policies and resources.

*Compensation & Employment

Thursday, March 26 • 9:00 a.m.-11:00 a.m. 100 McKenny Hall

This module will cover compensation philosophy and key processes, job classification specifications, employment selection methods, employment processing and supervisor roles and responsibilities. At the end of this session, participants will be able to demonstrate how to determine a salary, explain the importance of FLSA, understand the importance of classification specifications, identify different selection methods and construct a hiring proposal.

ELECTIVES

MBTI and Leadership

Tuesday, February 3 • 10:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. 100 McKenny Hall

Using the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, participants will explore personality preferences and discuss the implications of various types of supervisory effectiveness. The MBTI is a research driven effective tool to help people understand and adapt to the strengths, weaknesses, and unique contributions of one another. As a participant, this workshop will provide you with an understanding of your personal leadership preferences and the preferences of the people around you to help gain insight on how to improve working relationships. Participants will be asked to take an online Myers-Briggs type inventory prior to participating in this workshop.

The Five Dysfunctions of a Team

Thursday, February 12 • 1:00 p.m.-3:00 p.m. 100 McKenny Hall

Understand the five critical causes of dysfunctions in a team and strategies to overcome these dysfunctions. This seminar will introduce participants to an overview of Patrick Lencioni’s 5 Dysfunctions Model and provide tools and exercises to deal with team issues.

Lab sessions are offered weekly to provide convenient, individual assistance to Concur users. Attend for as long or as little as you would like, as many times as you would like!
