2 | The Golf Wagon – Philosophy

The Volkswagen Philosophy.

Innovation. Responsibility. Value. At Volkswagen we pride ourselves on this set of beliefs. So when you make the Volkswagen choice you can be assured that you have chosen a car with this creed at the very core of its inception, its development, and its realisation.

At Volkswagen we have combined the power of innovation with exceptional design to deliver a superior driving experience. Superb technologies such as our new low emission TSI petrol and TDI diesel engines not only offer an enhanced driving experience, but signifi cantly reduce both carbon emissions and fuel consumption.

Responsible, effi cient environmental considerations such as this not only save you money, but ultimately the planet’s precious resources, and is just one example of the many commitments that Volkswagen has made to reduce its carbon footprint.

We are proud of the reputation we have earned for value. A Volkswagen vehicle offers safety, reliability and comfort, making it outstanding value for money. With trusted and timeless German engineering our models are the perfect vehicles for you and your family.

Golf Wagon.

The Golf Wagon expands the Golf family, offering all the quality, reliability, safety and style of a Golf - with the added space and versatility of a wagon. It is the perfect companion for those who just need more Golf. It’s also fl exible enough to fulfi ll your practical needs whilst delivering German engineering with stylish design. The Golf Wagon is a fl exible companion for holidays, business trips or everyday use.

Design.

The Golf Wagon’s exceptional design is conveyed through powerful lines that accentuate its athletic character. Exuding quality and charisma, the front end design is unmistakably Golf. The broad, sleek lower air intake and upward angled headlights that fl ow seamlessly into the slim-line radiator grille convey a clearly defi ned, sophisticated design. The rear design is both sporty and elegant, with the rear light clusters and fully body-coloured bumper blending into the body, giving the Golf Wagon its distinctive appearance, while the integrated rear tailgate spoiler optimises aerodynamics.

O Optional extras. Please refer to the specifications section for details on availability of optional equipment by model variant.

New Technology.

Park Assist with front and rear parking sensors

O

Park Assist is able to manoeuvre the vehicle into parking spaces for you. If there’s enough room to park, Park Assist automatically takes charge of the steering when you select reverse gear. The accelerator, clutch and brake are all you need to control as the Golf Wagon is expertly parked for you. Ultrasonic sensors compare the available space with the length of the vehicle, when driving past a parking space at up to 30 km/h.

Rear View Camera (RVC)

O

The Rear View Camera (RVC) provides another dimension of rear ground visibility and safety. Even the trickiest parking spot becomes a breeze. When reverse gear is engaged, the driver is provided with a clear view of what’s behind the vehicle. On-screen guidance lines assist entry into diffi cult parking spaces.

Direct Shift Gearbox (DSG)

O

DSG is a new and advanced 6 or 7-speed transmission in which the clutch and gearshift are controlled electronically. What makes DSG unique is that the next gear is already pre-selected and awaiting power to be transferred, resulting in a gear change that takes only 3-4 hundredths of a second. The benefi ts are virtually no interruption to power, traction or acceleration, and additional fl exibility. Furthermore, because it ensures optimum transmission of the engine power, DSG provides excellent fuel consumption and driving satisfaction.

Optical Parking System (OPS)

O

The Optical Parking System takes the parking aid/parking sensor concept to a new level. A silhouette of the Golf Wagon is displayed on the radio or navigation system screen during parking, showing the Golf Wagon’s position and distance from obstacles. The location of any obstacle within range of the ultrasonic sensors is highlighted on screen.

Volkswagen’s constant aspiration for excellence means

that a

ordable innovative technology is at your

fi

ngertips in any model within our product range.

With technical expertise and the power of innovation,

Volkswagen brings moving ideas to the road.

TSI Technology. A miracle of performance.

TSI describes Volkswagen’s twin or single-charged petrol engines with direct injection. This innovative engineering has created high tech engines boasting excellent torque and power output at low revolutions, combined with lower fuel consumption and emissions.

The Golf Wagon TSI engine is an innovative 1.4 litre unit that saves petrol while delivering impressive power and performance thanks to the turbocharger and direct

petrol injection. A turbocharger compresses the air required for combustion. Compared with a naturally aspirated engine with the same displacement, a turbocharged engine can produce higher power and torque, as well as being highly effi cient.

TDI Technology.

Volkswagen’s cutting-edge TDI engines with Diesel

Particulate Filters feature Common Rail technology – injecting precise amounts of fuel at exceedingly high pressure.

The result is a cleaner burning engine with exceptional fuel economy, impressive torque and compelling performance.

Media Device Interface (MDI)

This sophisticated interface facilitates connection to USB audio devices, data storage devices and Apple iPod®*. The MDI allows audio

fi les to be operated via the in-dash audio system without the need to input controls via the media device itself. The MDI system also provides a charging function. It is standard on Comfortline models, while the glovebox mounted Media-In can be purchased as an accessory for Trendline models. * iPod® is a registered trademark of

ApplebInc.

RNS510 Satellite Navigation System

O

The RNS510 system has a user-friendly touch sensitive screen with a high resolution display that shows maps and video. This unique system calculates your travel route with incredible speed. It also features sophisticated voice recognition technology for increased convenience. With a generous 30GB hard drive and built-in DVD drive, your music library and navigation data is always at your fi ngertips. Your favourite music can also be accessed via an AUX-IN multimedia socket or an MP3 compatible SD memory card slot.

Daytime Driving Lights

Halogen headlights with daytime driving lights that have clear polycarbonate lenses and integrated turn signals provide clear illumination and improved driving safety.

Electro-mechanical Power Steering

Electro-mechanical power steering is a speed-sensitive electrical power assisted steering system which is only activated when needed and does without any hydraulic components. Compared to hydraulic power steering, vehicles fi tted with electro-mechanical power steering benefi t from lower fuel consumption and new convenience and safety functions.

Hill Start Assist (HSA)

Hill Start Assist holds the vehicle stationary for 1.5 seconds on hills with an incline greater than 5 percent, when the foot brake is released, by temporarily locking the brake pressure. This intelligent feature provides a comfortable hill start, which importantly avoids any rolling back.

Bluetooth

®

Phone Connectivity

Volkswagen’s Bluetooth® Phone Connectivity allows you to make hands free phone

calls to stay connected with your friends while your hands stay connected to the wheel. Bluetooth® Audio Streaming enables you to play music directly from your

phone without cables. The system can be operated via the Multi-function Display (MFD Plus) and when equipped, RCD510 or RNS510 touch screens. The system also displays your personalised phone book.

8 | The Golf Wagon – Safety

Safety.

Safety is of the highest priority to Volkswagen and is therefore an overriding theme in the design and engineering of the Golf Wagon. With a full suite of active and passive safety systems, you can rest assured that your safety has been thoroughly considered.

The Golf Wagon’s safety credentials include its rigid body structure which creates a solid passenger cell. Its body panels are designed to crumple in the event of an accident, absorbing the energy of the impact. The Golf Wagon’s lightweight construction is reinforced with hardened, high strength steel to give occupants maximum protection in an accident.

In an accident, depending on the severity of the impact, the Golf Wagon’s safety features work together to protect occupants by deploying the belt tensioners and airbags. The system also activates the hazard warning lights, the doors are unlocked, interior lights are switched on and the fuel pump is deactivated. Pedestrian safety has also been considered with a deformable bonnet to minimize injuries.

Active Safety - Everything designed to help prevent

accidents from happening.

Anti Slip Regulation (ASR)

ASR is a switchable traction control system that prevents the wheels from spinning under acceleration by intervening in the engine management system and reducing engine torque when necessary.

Anti-lock Braking System (ABS)

When braking, wheel speed sensors measure the road wheel speed and should one or more wheels start to lock the ABS system reduces brake pressure to that wheel. This prevents the wheels from locking during heavy or emergency braking, enabling the vehicle to remain steerable.

Brake Assist

During emergency braking, Brake Assist aids the driver by increasing the brake pressure automatically to a level exceeding the locking limit. The ABS is thus quickly brought into the operating range, which enables maximum vehicle deceleration to be achieved.

Electronic Brake-pressure Distribution (EBD)

Every vehicle’s centre of gravity shifts forwards when the brakes are applied. This presents a risk of the rear wheels tending to lock up due to the reduction in traction. Electronic Brake-pressure Distribution uses the solenoid valves in the ABS unit to regulate the braking power at the rear wheels, thereby ensuring maximum braking performance at both the front and rear wheels and preventing the rear end from swerving out due to over-braking in the rear wheels.

Electronic Di

erential Lock (EDL)

EDL improves driving and steering characteristics when accelerating on road surfaces where each wheel has a different degree of traction. The system operates automatically and is combined with the ABS system. Using the ABS wheel sensors, EDL monitors the speed of the individual driving wheels. When one wheel starts to spin due to differences in road surfaces, the system brakes the spinning wheel, transferring engine power to the wheel with the best traction.

Electronic Stabilisation Program (ESP)

ESP helps ensure that the vehicle goes where you steer it, even in extreme driving conditions. The ESP system constantly compares the actual movement of the vehicle with carefully pre-determined values. Should a situation arise in which the vehicle starts to skid, ESP will apply the brakes to individual wheels and automatically adjust the engine’s power output to correct the problem. It also minimises the likelihood of spinning off on a curve due to understeering or oversteering.

(9)

Safety – The Golf Wagon | 9

Passive Safety - Design measures taken to protect

the occupants of vehicles from injury, or to reduce

the risk of injury.

Crumple Zones

Front and rear crumple zones absorb the energy of an impact and divert the resulting forces away from the secure passenger safety cell.

Airbags

Six airbags (twin front, side and curtain) are standard features. Airbags combine with the seat belts to help reduce the risk of severe head and chest injuries in collisions. When infl ated, airbags cushion the head and upper body and distribute the resulting loads over as large an area as possible.

Safety Optimised Head Restraints

Safety optimised head restraints on the front seats are optimally positioned and specially contoured to help reduce whiplash injuries. In the event of an accident, excellent protection is achieved via the seatback controlling upper body movements, and this is balanced with head movements being controlled via the head restraints.

Seatbelts

Front seat passenger seatbelts are equipped with belt pre-tensioners and belt force limiters. Belt tensioners tighten the seatbelt on impact, pulling it closer to the occupant’s body, ideally positioning them for airbag infl ation. Belt force limiters reduce seat belt forces on front seat occupants and, in conjunction with belt tensioners and airbags, lessen the risk of upper body injuries. Three-point seatbelts are fi tted to all seats, and three child seat anchor points are fi tted in the rear.

10 | The Golf Wagon – Interior

Interior.

The Golf Wagon’s impressive interior consists of high quality materials and German engineering for superior ergonomics and aesthetics. The sculptural 3-spoke steering wheel gives your hands an intimate connection to the impeccable electro-mechanical power steering. Discover an array of creature comforts that make every drive pleasurable. The sophisticated interior is impressive for its particularly well thought out design. In the choice of material quality and surface design, great attention was paid to the tactile quality – after all, good design should also feel good.

The Golf Wagon’s large tailgate ensures the luggage compartment is easily accessible and, thanks to the 60/40 split folding rear seat, can be converted to a fl exible storage area. A low loading sill enables you to manoeuvre bulky items with ease. Not only do you experience a generous sense of spaciousness with the Golf Wagon, you also benefi t from a host of fl exible storage solutions, such as hidden storage compartments that are fl ush to the fl oor of the boot.

The superbly quiet cabin can be a tranquil place or the perfect venue for turning up the RCD310 audio system – creating a high quality audio experience in every seat. An auxiliary audio input socket for MP3 player adaptability can be found in the centre console.

The innovative luggage net comes standard with every Golf Wagon and provides the benefi ts of functionality as well as added safety by keeping luggage in place and away from passengers.

01. Take it easy and save

Drive the modern way and think ahead.

Drive smoothly and anticipate hazards. Hard braking and acceleration, sudden lane changes and unpredictable behaviour is fuel-ineffi cient.

04. Comfort high, fuel consumption low

Use auxiliary equipment in moderation.

Check the equipment you’re using – if you don’t need it, consider turning it off. De-misters, sound systems and air conditioning all use energy.

07. Well-oiled for impressive savings

Use Volkswagen approved engine oils.

A well-lubricated engine produces less emissions especially when the weather is cold or the trip is short. Change your oil at regular intervals.

05. Savings are in the air

Check your tyre pressures.

Check your tyre pressures to cut fuel consumption. Under-infl ated tyres force your car to burn more fuel. Tyres in good order will help you save fuel.

08. Keep it sleek

Cut aerodynamic drag.

Remember to remove roof racks, bike racks or roof boxes off your car when they’re not in use. Keep windows up and sunroofs closed to reduce drag.

03. Just let it roll

Use overrun fuel cuto

.

With the right driving techniques, you can really save. Whilst in gear, coast down hills or towards traffi c lights to reduce feeding fuel to your engine.

06. A warm engine – a cool way to save

Avoid short trips.

Plan to minimise the number of trips you need to make. Frequent short trips mean higher fuel consumption as cold engines run less effi ciently.

09. Lightly does it

Avoid unnecessary weight.

Every kilogram you load into your car takes energy to move – energy that will be supplied by burning fuel. The lighter you drive, the more you save.

02. Change up early and

fi

ll up later

Drive in the highest gear possible.

Use a higher gear with a manual transmission. Low revs take far less energy. With an automatic, reduce acceleration and avoid a kick down.

Glossary – The Golf Wagon | 33

Glossary.

Anti-Slip Regulation (ASR)

ASR is a switchable traction control system that prevents the wheels from spinning under acceleration by reducing engine torque.

Brake Assist

During emergency braking, Brake Assist aids the driver by increasing the brake pressure automatically to a level exceeding the locking limit. The ABS is thus quickly brought into the operating range, which enables maximum vehicle deceleration to be achieved.

Direct Shift Gearbox (DSG)

DSG is a manual gearbox in which the gearshifts are controlled electronically. What makes the DSG unique is that it has 2 separate gear sets operated by 2 multi-plate clutches. The benefi t of 2 gear sets and 2 multi-plate clutches is that one gear set and clutch is engaged driving the vehicle with the second clutch having already pre-selected the next gear awaiting for power to be transferred. As the next gear has already been pre-selected prior to power being applied, the gear change only takes 3-4 100ths of a second. There is virtually no interruption to power, traction or acceleration. The DSG also offers Tiptronic gear selection and sports mode.

Electronic Brake-pressure Distribution (EBD)

Electronic, more sophisticated means of regulating the ratio of front/rear brake pressure. Settings are varied according to driving and load conditions to ensure each wheel is braked to the optimum extent.

When a difference in driving wheel speed is detected (i.e. when one wheel starts to spin due to differences in road surfaces, e.g. due to water or dirt) the system brakes the spinning wheel, transferring engine power to the wheel with the best traction.

Electronic Stabilisation Program (ESP)

ABS and ASR traction control systems are integrated into the Electronic Stabilisation Program (ESP). In short, ESP helps ensure that the vehicle goes where you steer it even in extreme driving conditions. The ESP system constantly compares the actual movement of the vehicle with pre-determined values and should a situation arise where the vehicle starts to skid, ESP will apply the brakes to individual wheels and automatically adjust the engine’s power output to correct the problem. ESP prevents the vehicle from losing control when trying to avoid an accident, for example. It also prevents spinning off on a curve due to either understeer or oversteer.

Hill Start Assist (HSA)

Hill Start Assist (HSA) holds the vehicle when the foot brake is released by temporarily locking the brake pressure (for a maximum of 1.5 seconds) to provide comfortable starting-off without rolling back. Hill Start Assist (HSA) operates on inclines greater than 5% and is fi tted in combination with both the manual transmission and the Direct Shift Gearbox (DSG).

Park Assist*

Park Assist actively helps the driver when reversing into parallel parking spaces. The system works by using sensors mounted either side of the front bumper together with parking distance sensors front and rear. To parallel park the driver needs to press the Park Assist button and use the appropriate indicator before the car passes the potential parking space. Sensors in the front bumper then scan the size of the parking space as the car is driven slowly past and the driver is alerted if the parking space is big enough. If there is suffi cient space, the driver stops the car, selects reverse and let’s go of the steering wheel.

Park Assist will alert the driver of the intended reverse path in the Multi-Function Display, within the driver’s fi eld of vision. Park Assist then actively supports the driver by taking over the steering control and parks the vehicle in the available space using the ideal course, if necessary with several moves. The driver can however take over the control of the steering at any time and end the automatic parking procedure. The system can reverse into parking spaces on both the left hand and right hand side of the road, for example on one way streets.

Park Assist cannot replace the driver’s attentiveness. The driver is still legally responsible for the vehicle. If the driver notices a risk that pedestrians, other vehicles or objects could be damaged or if they are uncertain of the risk, they will need to react accordingly and stop the vehicle, ending the function.
