Hello everyone!

Welcome to the start of another school year! I hope you all had an enjoyable and relaxing summer and are excited about what this new year holds. I am thrilled and honored to be the Graduate Student Representative again this year. The movie outing, happy hours, study sessions, lectures, exhibition receptions, Third Thursdays and Art in Bloom at Mia were all a lot of fun last year. Please let me know if you have any ideas or come across something that you think would make a good program event, I am always open to suggestions. The events that I plan are a great opportunity to make new connections with your colleagues and break up the monotony of the week. We had a great turnout at the happy hour last week, so let’s keep that momentum up!

Images and Codes: The Problem of Reading Art

Both text and image can be seen; the process of interpreting what is seen is often described as “reading.” Written language is a learned code, and thus it requires the knowledge of a specific set of grammar, syntax, and vocabulary. In the field of art history, the method of “reading art” emerged out of the study of semiotics during the late eighties and continues to the present. By blurring the boundaries between text and image, “reading art” assumes that art objects, like texts, can be decoded and thus read. Moreover, “reading” presupposes that there are those who can read, those who cannot read, and those who determine how to read. Do images, however, require their own code of grammar, syntax, and vocabulary? This symposium aims to explore the intersections between reading and seeing, images and codes in East Asian art history.

Sample topics include, but are not limited to:

• Do art historians decode art, encode art, or both? • How does “reading” art differ from reading a language? • What are the limits to “reading art”?

• What is the value of viewing apart from any coding or conventionality it might contain? • With a work that mixes both text and art object, how are the two codes reconciled?

• How does the reproducibility of a work (such as a woodblock print) affect its “readability”? • How does one read an art object, text, or otherwise, in which the meaning is intentionally

obfuscated?

Stage Door and Front Lobby Attendant Part-time position (8-20 hours/week depending)

The Stage Door and Front Lobby Attendant is responsible for providing a safe and secure environment for employees, performers, patrons, vendors, renters, and contractors. Advancement Intern

Internship, unpaid

The Advancement Intern is responsible for assisting the Advancement Department in both daily and long-term operations, activities, and initiatives. A successful candidate will be curious to learn about fundraising and donor relations in arts or non-profits, is able to work independently as part of a team while multi-tasking projects, and excels in fast paced environments.

Education Intern Internship, unpaid

The Education Intern is responsible for assisting the successful sales and marketing of education programs to support work that is presented onstage through the World Music and Dance series, Performing Arts Classroom series, and Flint Hill International Children’s Festival (FHICF). A successful candidate will be curious to learn about educational programming in arts or non-profits, is able to work independently as part of a team, and excels in fast paced environments.

Community Engagement Intern Internship, unpaid

The Engagement Communications Intern is responsible for assisting the in the successful communication and implementation of programs to support work that is presented onstage and provide administrative assistance for projects developed for Education and Community Engagement Events. A successful candidate will be curious to learn about community Engagement in arts or non-profits, is able to work independently as part of a team, and excels in fast paced environments. Mia Internships

The Minneapolis Institute of Art offers unpaid volunteer internships for individuals considering or pursuing careers in museum work. Candidates who have completed at least two years of college coursework and have relevant skills, interests, or experiences are eligible to apply. As a prerequisite for curatorial or education internships, candidates must have completed a minimum of three art history courses. Undergraduate, graduate, and post-graduate students or candidates who meet these minimum requirements may apply. Candidates need not be a current student.

Internships may last from one to 12 months, with a minimum time commitment of 20 hours per week. Intern positions are typically project-oriented within a specific department. The program acquaints interns with various functions, programs, and departments of the museum. Students often arrange academic credit for their experience through the college or university.

Internship availability is determined by staff need and by the number of challenging intern projects. Past interns have worked in many museum departments, including Curatorial, Learning &

Innovation, External Affairs, and Development.

Interns may indicate particular areas of interest on the application form. Each department considers candidates for internships.

The application deadlines are:

October 1 (winter/spring internships beginning in January) March 1 (summer internships beginning in May or June) June 1 (fall/winter internships beginning in September)

The application materials required are: the completed application form (PDF) and essay, a recent résumé, academic transcripts, and two letters of recommendation. Student copies of college transcripts are acceptable. Academic letters of recommendation are preferred.

All application materials should be submitted via e-mail. All materials must be received by the appropriate deadline. Please include your name and the application period to which you are applying in the e-mail message’s subject line. Letters of recommendation should be sent directly to
