This document is part of three volumes prepared for the evaluation of

FOM-Rijnhuizen during September 2011. The fi rst volume contains the Self Evaluation report, including an introduction to the research at Rijnhuizen. The second volume contains the strategic plan (in which the introduction is not repeated). The scientifi c output, a glossary and other background information can be found in this third volume. All acronyms and specialist technical terms used are explained in the glossary.

This document of the FOM-Institute for Plasma Physics Rijnhuizen is the last of three volumes prepared for the evaluation of Rijnhuizen September 2011. It contains the scientifi c output, background information, a chapter detailing recommendations from and responses to the previous evaluation panel, and a glossary explaining all acronyms and specialist technical terms used.

In Chapter 1, a brief overview of the scientifi c output is given. This has been reproduced in part in the Self Evaluation report. In the following chapters, information is given on the individual groups or divisions. The precise information given may differ slightly per group due to differences in the nature of the groups. Because the PSI division was formed in 2010 out of the existing PSI-E group and part of the CPP-group, information for this division is not separated into individual groups.

Per group, the following information is provided:

A list of all project funding obtained. Budgets and number of FTEs involved are not given, because the funding is provided in various ways. The total funding obtained is fully accounted for in the fi nancial information in the self evaluation document. The programme funding listed in Table 1.2 of the Self Evaluation document is not listed here.

An overview of all national and international collaborations. The number of invited talks at conferences. The actual

information concerning the presentations is listed in the annual reports of Rijnhuizen.

An overview of memberships of committees and other professional activities 2005-2010 by group members.

Memberships and activities of the institute director are listed in Chapter 4.

A list of the scientifi c output, grouped in categories and listed by year of publication, and subsequently alphabetically by fi rst author.

Chapter 6 describes the 2008 evaluation panel recommendations and follow up.

The fi nal Chapter 7 is a glossary.

1.1 Reviewed scientifi c output, books and

patents

The scientifi c output is listed by research group for the Fusion Physics (chapter 2), nSI (chapter 4) and GUTHz division (chapter 5). The separation into individual research groups is not made for the groups in the PSI division in chapter 3. These groups were recently established and it is very diffi cult to assign papers from the past to a specifi c group.

Table 1 gives the scientifi c output as presented in chapters 2 to 5. Patents, patents pending or patents in the process of fi ling are listed under patents.

1.2 Contributions to conference proceedings

and magazines

The contributions to in most cases non-reviewed conference proceedings and magazines will not be listed but are reproduced in the annual reports of Rijnhuizen. In table 2 below, only those contributions are listed that involve a paper that is signifi cantly larger in size than a typical conferen ce abstract, which is not counted. For certain conferences, in particular in the fi eld of Fusion Physics, signifi cant proceedings are always prepared and the papers in these proceedings can be considered in many respects as a research publication. We therefore give a numeric overview of these papers in table 2. In the case of GUTHz, not all contributions by external users of FELIX could be retrieved. Only for Fusion Physics the output of the individual groups is listed.

1.3 Total scientifi c output

The total scientifi c output of the Institute is obtained by simply adding all information listed above, and is reproduced in table 3. The output of the IR User facility FELIX consists of the papers mentioned under FELIX group, almost all papers of the Molecular Dynamics group, and papers with no co-author from the GUTHz division, labeled External FELIX users only. From the numbers it is clear that in many cases GUTHz staff provide a signifi cant contribution to the research of external FELIX users.

1.4 Frequently used Journals

Over the six year evaluation period, a total of 724 papers have been published in a wide variety of Journals. Table 4 lists the most frequently used Journals, in which has been published four or more times. These represent 628 out of 724 Rijnhuizen publications.

In table 4, high impact journals are listed in bold. These are defi ned as all journals with an impact factor of 4 or more in the 2009 impact factor analysis by ISI, in addition to the leading journal in applied physics, Applied Physics Letters. In total, 223 papers were published in high impact journals, almost 31% of all papers. A graphical representation of Journals with more than 20 publications is given in Figure 5; almost 60% of all papers were published in these 12 Journals.
