State Bank of India: partner to enterprises worldwide
The State Bank of India (SBI), India’s largest financial services provider, supports the INVESTMENT LOUNGE at Global Business & Markets. SBI aims to play a key role in establishing and expanding business with India. Dr. Günter Schmittdiel, Director of the SBI in Frankfurt, outlines the objectives of his organization. What are your expectations with regard to HANNOVER MESSE 2015?
India is the Partner Country for this year’s HANNOVER MESSE, and we are the largest Indian bank with a wide international net-work spread over 35 countries and across all time zones. A large number of German and European companies are looking at India with renewed interest. We aspire to play a central role in facilitating business from/to India. The State Bank of India (SBI) has been active in Germany for 50 years. We aim to substantially increase our visibility in the German market.
What are the main reasons for investing in India?
India has got the unique advantage of the 3 Ds – i.e. Democracy, Demography and De-mand. India is the world’s largest democracy and has the largest population of young people. There is ever-growing demand from the second largest population in the world. The following facts confirm these state-ments:
■ In 1970 India’s GDP was only $ 63.5 billion. In 2013, the Indian GDP stood at $ 2.047 trillion. This is an increase of more than 2,900 %.
■ India is now the 10th largest economy in the world based on foreign trade. However, on the basis of purchasing power parity (PPP), India is the third largest economy in the world.
■ Demographics is one of the best pre-dictors of the long-term potential of a growing, market-based economy. More than 50 % of India’s population is below the age of 25.
How do you see the future potential for investment in India?
The International Monetary Fund has pre-dicted that India’s economy will overtake China’s in terms of its annual growth rate by 2016 and will grow at 6.3 and 6.5 percent respectively over the next two years. India remains an attractive target for foreign direct investment on account of its solid domestic market, educated workforce and competitive labour costs.
India’s largest financial services enterprise, the State Bank of India (SBI) has a dense network of 20,000 branches in India, plus 185 branch offices in 35 countries around the world. With a corporate history dating back more than 200 years, a market share of 25 percent and a bal-ance sheet total of $ 400 billion, SBI is a heavyweight in India’s financial sector. SBI Frankfurt (founded in 1965) serves German, European and Indian enterprises. Its portfolio encompass-es all forms of trade-related finance and corporate finance.
