JOB TITLE: Principal Lecturer in Mental Health Nursing

Context

The University of Lincoln is an ambitious institution with high aspirations and a rapidly improving profile that seeks to be a leading UK University by 2015. Its strategy is to combine outstanding research with research-engaged teaching and learning, and practice useful to the wider community.

The Principal Lecturer in Mental Health Nursing post is located within the School of Health and Social Care, one of six Schools and one Centre within the College of Social Science. The School is one of the largest in the University and offers a portfolio of qualifying and post-qualifying programmes in the fields of Nursing, Social Work, Health and Social Care, Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine. Current

developments include the establishment of a College-wide Professional Development Centre, an Integrated Masters programme and a firm commitment to

inter-professional learning. The School has a flourishing Health and Social Care research group, with current projects including research into mental health issues, a number of funded primary care studies, the experiences of children and young people in public care and the development of social work in Russia.

The Principal Lecturer in Mental Health Nursing post is a key position within the School, the College and the University that will offer the right person the opportunity to be the designated programme leader for the BSc (Hons) Nursing (Mental Health) programme, with a projected growth of up to 120 students by September 2014. The Principal Lecturer will be responsible for leading and managing the programme in partnership with service organisations and will work as part of a core management team with the Deputy Head of School, the Senior Academic in Nursing and the Principal Lecturer in Adult Nursing to assure the quality of undergraduate and postgraduate nursing and health-related educational provision within the University.

Purpose and Objectives of the Post

The post holder will be expected to contribute to the School and the University and will:

• Play a significant leadership and management role in the ongoing development of the BSc Nursing (Mental Health) programme. This includes further improving its reputation locally, regionally and nationally.

• Make a contribution to developing and growing the post-registration and post graduate health related programmes and short courses.

• Support the Senior Academic in Nursing in developing and sustaining strong partnership relationships with a range of external bodies including: the East Midlands Strategic Health Authority, the local Health Communities and Trusts, and other Higher Education Institutions in the region.

• Contribute to the strategic management and development of the School as a member of the School Leadership Group.

• Represent the School in one area of College level activity, such as quality assurance, learning and teaching, international development, enterprise, research or research ethics.

• Provide leadership in fostering synergies across disciplines and supporting the growth in inter-professional learning.

• Contribute to and support research and scholarly activity across the School and College.

• Work collaboratively to develop income generating opportunities for the School and College within health care and the related sectors.

Key Duties and Responsibilities Research and scholarly activity

• Maintain a personal scholarly profile of at least national quality and reputation that enhances the reputation and standing of the Nursing programmes, the School and University.

• Work with the Senior Academic in Nursing to support the development of scholarly activity and research within the nursing team and School, informed by the research strategy, assessment exercises such as the REF, and the

aspirations and capabilities of staff.

• Seek funding to support and develop scholarly activity, and support/supervise others who seek to attract funding.

• Provide supervision and mentorship to the nursing team, supporting them in the development of their personal research track records and research impact. Teaching and Learning

• Co - lead on the ‘research-engaged teaching’ and the ‘student as producer’ University initiatives in nursing and health-related areas.

• Undertake teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels and carry out all related activities.

• Co - lead on the development of innovative and improved approaches to teaching and learning, informed by research and engagement with practice, within their own subject area(s) and across the School.

• Contribute to the development and implementation of learning and teaching strategies and enhancement plans within the School and across the

College/University.

in developing enhanced models of research-engaged and practice-informed teaching.

• Contribute to wider thinking and practice within the University on teaching and learning.

External Engagement, Enterprise and Knowledge Exchange

• Support the Senior Academic in Nursing in seeking external funding from various sources, including research funding councils, local and regional health

commissioners, including applied practice and policy- related evaluations, consultancy and knowledge transfer to enable both income diversification and improved academic reputation.

• Engage with external employers and other stakeholders to consistently assure and enhance the quality of pre registration Mental Health Nurse training. • Support and provide leadership on academic practices to improve student

employability.

• Represent the School and University on nursing and health-related external practitioner, employer, and policy bodies and networks such that the interests and strategies of the School and College are advanced.

External Academic Engagement and Relations

• Support the Senior Academic in Nursing in developing leadership and national/international profile and reputation in leading and relevant academic networks and associations, focusing but not limited to cognate subject bodies and associations, e.g. Council of Deans of Health, Nursing and Midwifery Council, Royal College of Nursing.

• Create opportunities for colleagues to develop and build external academic and associated networks and relationships.

• Support and enable the development of academic and related (e.g. policy) partnerships and linkages that further the academic development of the School and the University’s strategic plan.

Academic and Departmental/School Leadership

• Support the Head and Deputy Head of School in its management and direction, as appropriate and agreed with the Head. This may include: workload planning and work allocation for designated staff, staff appraisal, participating on

recruitment and promotion panels, contributing to validation and monitoring events.

• Contribute to the direction and development of the College, as appropriate and agreed with the Pro Vice Chancellor.

• Contribute to and support the University’s strategy and strategic plan. • Coach, Support and Mentor early career academics
