Lufthansa LEOS (short for Lufthansa Engineering and Operational Services GmbH) is the industry leader in all areas of aircraft ground support equipment (GSE). Founded in 1995 as the Lufthansa Group’s leading system partner for GSE and workshops, LEOS has developed an unmatched base of knowledge and experience in technical towing services and in the engineering and maintenance of tools and equipment.

The “architect” of GSE
This sounds much easier than it is. Tools and facilities are expensive; that’s why our aim is to develop them to be multi-functional. A maintenance dock, for example, should ideally be adaptable to all aircraft types operated by an airline without compromising staff safety or risking damage to the plane. Other examples of our portfolio are special wrenches or lifting equipment for parts or aircraft mechanics.
Certified to innovate
Forty engineers in our design department work full time to manage the entire process, from tracking to documentation and development. Special teams take care of projects such as the GSE for a new mega-airport, including construction and strength calculation using the finite elements method (FEM). LEOS is a DIN ISO 9001:2008-certified organization and regularly undergoes recertification audits by SGS. As an EASA Part-21-approved design organization, LEOS
is authorized to develop and modify aircraft maintenance tools and ground support equipment – a service we offer to the Lufthansa Group and other airlines, airports, and GSE organizations. We also design all kinds of facilities, from aircraft docking systems to complete maintenance bases, tailor-made to fit the customer’s individual needs and specifications all the way to C-checks.

In today’s world, the knowledge of how to do something can be worth more than the act itself. If, for example, your company operates a large number of catering trucks, we can help design a repair facility tailored to the needs of those trucks, and only those trucks – which saves you money on things you don’t need. And for additional savings, our design can be implemented by local contractors.
Ground support that meets your priorities
In some cases, the focus lies more on functionality than price. For example, composite materials are popular in today’s aircraft construction due to their strength-to-weight ratio. But working with these composites requires a special oven that must be calibrated in a very complex process. You can do that yourself by trial and error. Or you can call us.

This makes even more sense when you consider that all aircraft maintenance procedures and GSE must be integrated seamlessly into your existing process landscape. Investments in GSE and maintenance equipment can make or break your business – and that’s a good argument for expert consulting up front. LEOS can help you in many different ways. First, we analyze your situation and identify the equipment you really need. Second, we provide you with an objective and unbiased sourcing recommen-dation. And finally, if requested we can manage the whole process in a one-stop service that covers all the necessary documentation, transportation, staff training and maintenance of the equipment. Thereafter, regular inspections during manufacturing by our experts ensure that your orders will be followed precisely. And we only supply tested and certified material that meets defined quality standards.
Intelligent doesn’t always mean new
Sometimes, the most intelligent purchase isn’t new equipment. As the GSE industry leader, we’re familiar with most of the equipment in use at airports all over the world – not least because we maintain it for our customers. Take a tow truck, for example. When LEOS performs regular overhaul, we strip the whole machine down to the last screw, test it meticulously, replace worn parts and reassemble it. Afterward, it’s literally as good as new. Except that it costs less.

Places of excellence
Germans have a reputation for outstanding technical expertise. Maybe that’s why there’s actually more pressure on us as a GSE partner than on anybody else. But that’s good for LEOS’ customers: Since we’ve learned to repair virtually anything, anywhere and anytime, quickly and effectively, our customers can be sure we’ll reduce their downtime to an absolute minimum.
Not just certified
Our certified airside workshops in Frankfurt, Munich and Düsseldorf are all headed by master mechanics and qualified according to German industry standards, which we regularly exceed. Every day of the year, we can deliver the whole spectrum of GSE maintenance and overhaul services, including planning, performance, documentation and tracking.
Anything but aircraft
Lufthansa LEOS services, maintains, repairs, overhauls and calibrates anything, including pushback and towing tractors, de-icers, platforms, lifters, busses, trucks, cars, electrocars and all other ground support equipment. Also covered are aircraft maintenance tools, such as jacks, engine stands and whatever else could possibly need fixing or over-hauling. If need be, we’ll even fly to where the equipment is located, whether in Germany or elsewhere.
Certified calibration services
From the smallest item, such as an arc-protected torch, to huge engine stands, our 85 certified and experienced mechanics do any welding, fitting and bulging required. We can calibrate your torque and pressure measuring equipment in our proprietary laboratory. Lufthansa LEOS maintains traceability to the German national metrol-ogy institute (Physikalisch Technische Bundesanstalt, PTB) by means of calibration certificates issued by a laboratory accredited by the German calibration association (Deutscher Kalibrierdienst, DKD).
Focus on your core business
But it can be even easier: We’ll develop a complete solution for your entire vehicle fleet. Our “Gas & Drive” product, for example, means that your only responsibility for your vehicles is to drive and refuel them – we look after the rest.

Crew transportation is carried out with modern and comfortable coaches.
We have a long history of towing – we position aircraft reliably and safely, organize hangar and maneuver towing and execute all repositioning movements. In fact, we’ve been in this business for so long that we’re the industry leader – we even co-develop towing vehicles! It was our idea, for example, to build a tow-barless truck, in which a single operator controls the whole process without having to leave the driver cabin. We did the same thing for the towbar truck. Both developments save you time and money.
Industry leader in single-man towing
Lufthansa LEOS performs maintenance and maneuver towing without the need for a maintenance engineer in the aircraft cockpit. Our specially trained and qualified drivers can also carry out radio-controlled maintenance tows, eliminating the need for a mandatory maintenance tow follow-me. With LEOS, towing is faster and more cost-effective.
Saving time and money in towing
For single-operator tows at night, we illuminate the aircraft with strobe lights installed on our towbarless towing tractors instead of using the aircraft navigation lights. This saves operators valuable APU operating time and even increases visibility. We also perform single-man towbar push-backs without walkout assistance. Upon request, we can even offer special training for your own staff, comprising an introduction of several days to towbar and towbarless tractor driving as well as safety awareness training.
Optimum planning and control
We equip our single-operator tow tractors with GPS-supported IT tools for optimum planning, control, punctuality and trans-parency. Furthermore, we train our staff thoroughly and keep up standards with an advanced safety management system. Our engineers’ expertise is the source of continuous improve-ments to Lufthansa LEOS’ towing tractor fleet.

Together with GSE industry partners, Lufthansa LEOS spearheaded the development of a TaxiBot demons-trator, a fully pilot-controlled tow vehicle designed to perform dispatch towing with all engines off.
