ORSHIP Psalm 139

Pastor: Lord, you know everything there is to know about me. All: You perceive every movement of my heart and soul, and you understand my every thought before it even enters my mind.

Pastor: You’ve gone into my future to prepare the way, and in kindness you follow behind me to spare me from the harm of my past.

All: With your hand of love upon my life, you impart a blessing to me.

Pastor: This is just too wonderful, deep, and incomprehensible! Your understanding of me brings me wonder and strength.

All: Where could I go from your Spirit? Where could I run and hide from your face? Pastor: If I go up to heaven, you’re there!

All: If I fly with wings into the shining dawn, you’re there! If I fly into the radiant sunset, you’re there waiting! Pastor: Wherever I go, your hand will guide me;

your strength will empower me.

All: You formed my innermost being, shaping my delicate inside and my intricate outside, and wove them all

together in my mother’s womb.

Pastor: I thank you, God, for making me so mysteriously complex! Everything you do is marvelously breathtaking.

All: It simply amazes me to think about it! How thoroughly you know me, Lord!

EADING 1 Samuel 3:8-20

GOD called again, “Samuel!”—the third time! Yet again Samuel

got up and went to Eli, “Yes? I heard you call me. Here I am.” That’s when it dawned on Eli that GOD was calling the boy. So Eli

directed Samuel, “Go back and lie down. If the voice calls again, say, ‘Speak, GOD. I’m your servant, ready to listen.’” Samuel

returned to his bed. Then GOD came and stood before him

exactly as before, calling out, “Samuel! Samuel!” Samuel answered, “Speak. I’m your servant, ready to listen.” GOD said

to Samuel, “Listen carefully. I’m getting ready to do something in Israel that is going to shake everyone up and get their attention. The time has come for me to bring down on Eli’s

(5)

family everything I warned him of, every last word of it. I’m letting him know that the time’s up. I’m bringing judgment on his family for good. He knew what was going on, that his sons were desecrating God’s name and God’s place, and he did nothing to stop them. This is my sentence on the family of Eli: The evil of Eli’s family can never be wiped out by sacrifice or offering.” Samuel stayed in bed until morning, then rose early and went about his duties, opening the doors of the sanctuary, but he dreaded having to tell the vision to Eli. But then Eli summoned Samuel: “Samuel, my son!” Samuel came running: “Yes? What can I do for you?” “What did he say? Tell it to me, all of it. Don’t suppress or soften one word, as God is your judge! I want it all, word for word as he said it to you.” So Samuel told him, word for word. He held back nothing. Eli said, “He is GOD. Let him do whatever he thinks best.” Samuel grew

up. GOD was with him, and Samuel’s prophetic record was

flawless. Everyone in Israel, from Dan in the north to Beersheba in the south, recognized that Samuel was the real thing—a true prophet of GOD. GOD continued to show up at Shiloh, revealed

through his word to Samuel at Shiloh. Reader: Word of God, word of life. All: Thanks be to God.

EADING 1 Corinthians 6:11-17

And this is what some of you used to be. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and in the Spirit of our God. “All things are lawful for me,” but not all things are beneficial. “All things are lawful for me,” but I will not be dominated by anything. “Food is meant for the stomach and the stomach for food,” and God will destroy both one and the other. The body is meant not for fornication but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body. And God raised the Lord and will also raise us by his power. Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ? Should I therefore take the members of Christ and make them members of a prostitute? Never! Do you not know that whoever is united to a prostitute becomes one body with her? For it is said, “The two shall be one

(6)

6

flesh.” But anyone united to the Lord becomes one spirit with him.

Reader: Word of God, word of life. All: Thanks be to God.

CCLAMATION Yours, Lord is the Glory (Verse 4) (pg.11)

G

OSPEL John 1:43-51

For John, there needs to be no miraculous birth to indicate Jesus’ divine identity, because he is the God-sent teacher. He is the one who has come from God to replace human kings, the ultimate fulfillment of religious hopes, and the divine judge glorified by angels at the end of time. Today’s reading exemplifies why Christians need to know the Old Testament: the God who called Philip and Nathanael is the God whom ancient Samuel followed.

Pastor: The holy gospel according to Matthew. All: Glory to you, O Lord.

The next day Jesus decided to go to Galilee. He found Philip and said to him, “Come, follow me.” Philip was from Bethsaida, Andrew and Peter’s hometown. Philip went to look for

Nathanael and told him, “We have found the very person Moses and the prophets wrote about! His name is Jesus, the son of Joseph from Nazareth.” “Nazareth!” exclaimed Nathanael. “Can anything good come from Nazareth?” “Come and see for yourself,” Philip replied. As they approached, Jesus said, “Now here is a genuine son of Israel—a man of complete integrity.” “How do you know about me?” Nathanael asked. Jesus replied, “I could see you under the fig tree before Philip found you.” Then Nathanael exclaimed, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God—the King of Israel!” Jesus asked him, “Do you believe this just because I told you I had seen you under the fig tree? You will see greater things than this.” Then he said, “I tell you the truth, you will all see heaven open and the angels of God going up and down on the Son of Man, the one who is the stairway between heaven and earth.”

Pastor: The gospel of the Lord. All: Praise to you, O Christ.

Pastor: Blessed be the holy Trinity,  one God, who was in the beginning, who makes a dwelling among us, who covers us with justice and mercy.

All: Amen.

Pastor: Let us confess our sin in the presence of God and of one another…….God of goodness and lovingkindness,

All: we confess that we have sinned against you and our neighbors. We have turned away from your

invitation to new life. We have turned away from the lowly and downtrodden. In your abundant mercy, forgive us our sins, those we know and those known only to you, for the sake of the one who came to live among us, Jesus Christ, our Savior. Amen.

Pastor: Let us pray,

ALL: I am loved by God. I am marvelously and wonderfully made! The world may not always recognize the good in me, but you continually call me to bring out my best. You go out ahead to open up my future; you follow behind to spare me the harm of my past. I praise you, God, for new life through the forgiveness  of Jesus, the Son of God and a path between earth and heaven. Amen.

Pastor: We proclaim what we believe as the people of God! All: I believe in God the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right

As we celebrate a new year, we are excited to enter the Year of Generosity!

What does it mean to be generous with your time?

What does it mean to be generous with your gifts and talents? What does it mean to be generous with your resources?

This year we are exploring generosity in its many forms, and we invite you to join us!

We are kicking off this year by embarking on a Daily Bible Reading Guide!

We will be reading the New Testament in chronological order.

Invite your friends and family, your Bible Study group, and your Church Council and join us as we journey into the New

“Follow Me”

We live in a culture of invitation. Television invites us to

join complicated story arcs so that we feel connected to

the characters. Commercials invite us to see their

product as a new movement and invite us to join it. We

are invited to join groups on Facebook and invited into

chat rooms and blog responses. The number of social

networks is exploding as we are invited into ever

expanding ways to connect.

Invitation is an essential

part of our walk of faith,

but here we frequently

see ourselves not as the

invited but rather the one

who is supposed to be

doing the inviting. We can

misuse invitation, maybe

using the phrase “invite

Jesus into your heart,”

which often results in the misunderstanding that we are

carrying a little bit of Jesus wherever we go. But today’s

gospel (John 1:43-51) emphasizes not invitation as

our call to others to join the walk of faith but rather

Jesus’ invitation to us to follow him. Jesus’ invitation

is not that we carry him with us but rather that we

follow where he would lead. When Christ invites Philip

to “follow me,” may we hear that invitation in our own

ears.
