Set amongst the modern shops, bars, restaurants, waterside centre and market is the medieval centre of Lincoln City which has an abundance of original 14th and 15th century buildings and half timbered Tudor houses.

A marina is located at Brayford Pool and surrounded by the University of Lincoln campus and a variety of bars and restaurants along with the Odeon multi-screen cinema. Climb up the challenging and rather aptly named Steep Hill to take a look around Lincoln’s historic Cathedral Quarter and visit the city’s fine Cathedral and Castle.

This area, known as Bailgate, has many fine specialist shops including boutiques, antique, craft, book and gift shops which line the cobbled streets. This is also the location for the famous Lincoln Christmas market which takes place at the beginning of December.

A circular walk of 13km (8 miles)

The villages of Dunholme, Nettleham and Scothern sit on the Lincolnshire Edge, the limestone backbone of the county, north of the city of Lincoln. In the west is the Limestone Heath and in the east the Lincoln Clay Vale. It may be difficult to see the transition but you may notice the drier stonier soils of the Heath and wetter clayey soils of the Vale! The landscape is open and arable with Lincoln Cathedral visible on the skyline. This walk links the three villages and their Early English village churches of St Chad’s, All Saints’ and St Germain’s.

There are many fine old houses and cottages built of the local limestone in each village. The name Dunholme originates from ‘Dunna’s homestead’, Nettleham from ‘the homestead where nettles grow’ and Scothern from ‘ Scot’s or Scots’ thorn tree’. All three villages have a beck running through their centre, the one in Nettleham being particularly popular with ducks! Both Dunholme and Nettleham are also lucky enough to have ponds which provide a great opportunity to see a variety of wildlife.
