Crimping Tools for Solderless

Electrical Terminals and Ferrules

Professional crimping tools for solderless terminals must compress the whole length of the terminal’s “barrel” without damaging the individual strands of the conductor and without breaking the terminal itself. The conductor shall be secured that it shall not be pulled out of the crimped terminal. Some terminals require a double crimping operation.

The crimp shape produced by quality tools can vary from a simple indent to a single or double flat mark, or a concentric hexagonal shape.

The tool used must match the type of solderless terminal which must be crimped, both in type and in wire gauge. With regards to type, different tools are required for each of the following styles of terminals:

 insulated solderless terminals;

 miniature solderless terminals (smaller than 22AWG);

 power solderless terminals larger than 8AWG (in most cases, uninsulated);

 “Flag” solderless insulated terminals;

 Closed-end connectors;

 “open-barrel” uninsulated terminals;

All ITC tools are covered by a 12-month parts and labour warranty.

Tools for UNINSULATED TERMINALS

Ratcheting Industrial-grade crimping tools 22-6AWG

Three industrial-grade ratcheting crimping tools covering a wide range of wire gauges. These tools crimp uninsulated terminals from 0.5 to 16 mm2 (22 to 6AWG) with side entry. Crimp shape is indent.

Material: Hardened steel. Plastic-coated handles.

How to Order (Order by Part No.):

Manual crimping tools for uninsulated power terminals (>8AWG)

Two manual ratchet-action tool, with long handles to minimize operator’s effort, for crimping uninsulated terminals from 6 to 25 mm2 (10 to 4AWG). Material: steel, hardened die, plastic coated handles. Imprint shape on terminals is indent for model HD-25L (p/n 500.065) and hexagonal for model HD-25X (p/n 500.055).

ITC’s manual, rotating-die crimp tool type CT38 (Part No. 500.038) (non-ratcheting) is very practical and economical, as the female die can be selected by simple rotation among the values: 10mm2 (8AWG) – 16mm2 (6AWG) – 25mm2 (4AWG) – 35mm2 (2AWG). Long handles minimize operator effort.

(3)

Finally, the heavy-duty single-die crimp tool type HD120 (part No. 500.620) is a non-ratcheting single-die heavy-duty tool, designed for crimping uninsulated terminals from 16 to 120 mm2 (approx. 6 to 4/0AWG). It requires no separate or rotating dies: adjustment is made by turning a knurled screw on the tool’s head. Among its features:

 appropriate for most types of solderless power terminals. No risk of losing any dies.

 single indent crimp.

 long handles make operation extremely easy even for the largest wire size.

 die made of tempered steel. Handles of high tensile strength aluminum tubing with plastic grip.

Crimping range for HD-120: (AWG values are approximate - Tool is rated in mm2 and not in AWG):

mm2 1 6 25 35 50 70 95 120

AWG 6 4 2 1 00 000 0000

Crimping Tools for FERRULES (Cord End Terminals)

Crimping tools for ferrules (cord end terminals) must provide adequate pressure along the whole length of the ferrule, and result in a crimped profile which is suitable for the specific application. Serration along the profile of the crimp attains the double result of lessening the possibility of conductor pull-out from the crimped ferrule, and of improving contact between the ferrule and most models of existing wire clamps.

ITC can provide a variety of ferrule crimping tools, from simple plier-type hand crimpers to heavy-duty and automatic stripping/crimping machines. All tools are covered by a 12-month parts and labour warranty.

Economy Plier-type Ferrule Crimping Tools

Model PE7 (part No. 500.047) Precision Ferrule Plier-type Crimper is a precision non-ratchet tool for limited production, for quality crimping single ferrules – uninsulated and insulated – from 0.25 to 2.5 mm2 (24 to 14AWG) or twin ferrules 0.14 to 1.5mm2 (26 to 16AWG) with different crimp indents. Crimp shape is trapezoidal (see picture), ideal for inserting in terminal blocks, contactors, circuit breakers.

Professional, Ratcheting Ferrule Crimping Tools

Type AE professional, patented ratchet-action ferrule crimping tools feature parallel-action crimping, meaning that the same pressure is applied along the whole length of the ferrule. Front loading makes access to reduced space easier. Single-die operation means that there is no possibility of choosing the wrong slot for crimping a ferrule – the tool self-adjusts to the proper section, without variation in crimping pressure.

Crimp shape: trapezoidal. Material: tempered steel, burnished. Ergonomic grips in polyurethane compound.

Type PEW 8.85 and 8.86 ratchet-action ferrule crimping tools feature square or hexagonal crimping shape, obtained by means of synchronous driven crimp jaws. As a result, the same pressure is applied along the whole length of the ferrule and the shape is ideal for installation in wire clamps (square crimp) or in screw-pressure wire terminals (hexagonal crimp). Side loading on both models, single-die operation (the tool self-adjusts to the proper section, without variation in crimping pressure).

Type PEW 8.88 (part No. 500.049) is a ratchet-action ferrule crimping tool with front access and square crimp shape. A 2-position lever extends the maximum crimping range (from 28AWG) to a maximum of either 7AWG or 5AWG: the widest crimp range of all our tools!

Crimp shapes: see illustrations below. Material: tempered steel, burnished. Ergonomic grips in polyurethane compound.

“QUADRO” Manual Multifunction ferrule tool

“QUADRO” is a manual tool designed to significantly increase productivity in the termination of control wiring with insulated ferrules. QUADRO (part No. 500.090) performs 4 functions on stranded wires 0.5 to 2.5mm2 (22-14AWG):

 Cuts the wire;

 Strips the insulation;

 Twists the strands;

 Crimps the ferrule.

This tool can cut wires up to 2.5mm2 (~14AWG) (with most common types of insulation). It then strips them precisely and safely, and prepares the stripped end by twisting the bare strands: this enables easy insertion in the ferrule. For the final operation, no adjustment is necessary: ferrules are supplied in strips within quick-change magazines (refillable): one last pressure on the handles performs a quality crimp, and the tool is ready for another cycle. Operation is effortless, and the tool weighs less than 1/2lb. Quadro is approved by TÜV-GS (Germany) and carries the CE mark.

90 – 120 PSI (6-8 kg.).

Crimping “jaws” are easily replaced on the air cylinder by loosening the assembling pin. Two models of air cylinder are in stock: Standard and High Power (the latter for up to 12-10 AWG and nylon insulated terminals).

[NOTE: Standard model to be discontinued]

Jaws for crimp terminals are equipped with the exclusive ITC positioning device, which holds the terminal in position for precise, quick and safe crimping. This positioning device can be easily adjusted to fit terminals of various diameters, lengths, and thicknesses.

Available accessories include:

 Bench mounting attachment.

 Pneumatic foot switch and approx. 5’ of flex air hose, for hands-free operation.
