Application of Number Portfolio

(If you structure your portfolio in the following way it can be used for one of your

IT tasks

).

Section 1

Plan for investigation Section 2

Draft copy of Investigation report

Section 3

Final copy of investigation report Section 4

Your evaluation of your investigation, including a copy of the feedback you have received Section 5

 A screenshot of an internet search (google) for an article about Eco Footprints.

 Printouts of at least 2 internet sites (use a highlighter pen to highlight what information you will use in your investigation) – you should say why you chose these IT sources, and whether you think they are reliable

 A printout of your Eco Footprint quiz results.  A copy of the table of data you have chosen.  A copy of the chart of data that you have chosen.

Section 6

You need to include screenshots as below

1. You sending and receiving emails with attachments about your investigation 2. You formatting a word document

3. You using formula in a spreadsheet Section 7

You need to include your candidate log – this should be completed as you go along

(2)

Your Plan

You should make sure that you take some time to plan your investigation and talk about what you are going to do. You should also say why you are going to do each thing.

For example

I am going to calculate the mean average Eco Footprint for developing countries and compare it with the developed countries.

I am going to do this because this will show me which group of countries use the most carbon.

Your plan should talk about

1. What your investigation is about and what you think you might find out 2. Why you are carrying out the investigation

3. What calculations you are going to use and why 4. What level of accuracy you will use and why

5. Where you are going to get your information from and why

6. How you are going to make sure people can understand your results (which type of graph and which type of diagram you will use and why

7. Which IT software you will use and why

(3)

My Investigation Report – what is should contain

You should think of a title for your report Introduction

In this section you will write about:  what you are going to do

 why you are going to look at this particular area  what your report will contain

Background

In this section give some background to Sustainability and Carbon footprints

Findings

This is the main body of your report.

You will need to split this section into subsections with its own subheading. Each subheading will be about a different thing you did in your investigation e.g. calculating your own carbon footprint; calculating the mean; calculating percentages and so on.

Each subheading will contain the following sections  What you are going to do

 Why you are going to do it  How you are going to do it

 A description of how you performed your calculations  Details of how you checked your calculations

 Details of the results of your calculations

 A written description of what your calculations show

Conclusion

Example of a subsection

My Percentage Calculations

I will now look at the percentage of people in the developing countries who have an Eco Footprint over 2 planets and compare it with the percentage in developed countries who have an Eco footprint over 2 planets. I am doing this because the results will show me what percentage of the population in each category are high users.

The method of calculating percentages is to count the number of people with an Eco Footprint over 2 planets, and divide this number by the total number of people in the sample. Then the answer is multiplied by 100 and this gives a percentage. There is a formula to use. I am going to use this formula in an Excel spreadsheet.

percentage

2 planets=

Number of people withascore

2 planets Total number of peoplesample ×100

Developed Countries

percentage

2 planets= 5 22×100

percentage

2 planets=23 %

Developing Countries

percentage

2 planets= 10 36×100

percentage

2 planets=28 %

These results show me that there are a larger percentage of the people in Developing Countries who have a high Eco footprint, in fact 5% more than in Developed Countries. This surprises me as I thought it would be the other way around.

(5)

Your evaluation

You have to have feedback from someone on your final report.

You should write and evaluation of how the investigation went.

Whether you used the right calculations, whether you should have used others.

Did you use the correct graphs and charts, should you have used others?

Did you use the correct software or should you have used something else?

What did other people say about your investigation report, should you listen to their

comments and improve as they suggest, or ignore them.

(6)

Your Screenshots

In your “investigation report” you will have used the following software features. You should

screenshot what you have used.

Microsoft Word

Saving files into a file structure changing fonts

use of justification tabulation,

changing margins changing page layout

customizing bullet point using columns

changing line spacing

Inserting images (pictures, charts, etc.) cropping,

use of text wraps, framing,
