Emerald
Emerald or fine green jade is recommended for strengthening a weak Mercury. It increases the powers of communication. Obviously this is important and necessary for business people and those in the various fields of communication, be they writers, speakers or entertainers.
Emeralds and jade are said to strengthen the nerves and on the physical side, to purify the blood. It increases the flow of positive life energy and so has been used by healers to further increase their ability to mend the body and mind.
It is very important that to be most effective, the emerald has a minimum of flaws and a depth and intensity of color. It is much better to use a very clear, flawless emerald of light color, than to use one with many imperfections. Emeralds generally are flawed. In any case, the flaws interfere with the transmission of Mercury's cosmic energy and should be avoided.
"Oiling" of emeralds is also a common procedure; cedar oil is used to make
imperfections invisible. This is a commonly accepted practice in the trade, so emeralds must be carefully studied to make sure of their quality. Another practice is to put green dye into the oil to deepen the color of stone.
Sources of emerald are South America, most notably Colombia (the best in the world) and Brazil. There are also several countries in Africa (Zambian and Tanzanian are the best) which together with India, Iran, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Egypt and Russia are also sources.
Jade is of two types, jadeite jade and nephrite jade. "Precious" jade is jadeite, which is costly and comes in different shades of green, as well as lavender, white, red, blue and black. Only the green jadeite is used for strengthening Mercury. Nephrite generally comes in green, is common and not expensive. Jadeite is most effective, and should be of even color, translucent (not opaque) and at least of 5 carats. It can be dyed; other materials, such as chalcedony, may look like it and therefore passed off as jade.
Sources for jadeite are Burma and China; for nephrite China, the United States and New Zealand.
Peridot and green tourmaline may be used as substitutes for emerald or fine green jade, as well as lesser qualities of green jade, although their potencies are lesser than the primary stones.
Propitiation Details
Instructions for installation of Emerald or Green Jade
Emeralds or green jade would best be purchased as well as set, on a Wednesday and when Mercury is in its own sign or nakshatra (if possible), as previously delineated, or a friendly sign or nakshatra. The weight of emerald should be no less than 1 carat, but 2 carats is better. Jade should be 5 carats in weight. It may be set in yellow or white gold, silver, or platinum, but yellow gold is optimum. If worm as a ring it is placed on the smallest finger, preferably on the right hand. Whether a ring or pendant, it must be open-backed while set so that the stone comes into contact with the skin. For more

1. Rinse emerald or jade ring / pendant in water. 2. Rinse in cow's milk.
3. Rinse again in water.
4. Place on altar/shrine, or in a sacred place before a picture of the presiding deity of Mercury or a Mercury Yantra.
