English I Honors Class Management Plan 2020-21 Mrs. Mancini - [email protected]

Mrs. Mancini’s English website: sites.google.com Ms. Erica Sciametta - [email protected]

Ms. Cabanilla-Alves - Supervisor of Instruction - [email protected]

“Cultivate an optimistic mind, use your imagination, always consider alternatives, and dare to believe that you can make possible what others think is impossible.”– Rodolfo Costa, author

Welcome to Bergen Tech H.S. and English I Honors. We have outlined some information that will acquaint you with the content and expectations of this class. Read all pages. Have a parent e-sign that they have read and agree to all the information provided here. Signature due: Wednesday, September 16, 2020.

English I Honors examines the human condition through world literary traditions. Selections may include but are not limited to the following: Fahrenheit 451, excerpts from The Iliad and The Odyssey, Romeo and Juliet, The Kite Runner, selected poems, and multicultural and rhetorical texts.

Students will also complete both a fiction and non-fiction independent reading with a focus on skills in analyzing texts and sources effectively.

Students will apply the writing process, encompassing drafting, revising, editing, and student reflection.

MATERIALS:

Three-subject spiral notebook for English ONLY with 3 pockets - This will keep you organized.

Journaling can be done with a traditional marble notebook or an attractive journal, as shown below. The physical act of writing is good for your brain. The brain engages differently when we write by hand. Studies based on brain scans show that writing things down prevents transcribing the

instructor’s lectures. When we write the information in our own words, we understand and remember it better. Read more about the benefits of writing at the link provided here.

(2)

A variety of post-it notes and flags for annotating - We will learn to annotate online, as well.

Package of highlighters – (yellow, orange, pink, blue, and green) - We will highlight online, as well.

Optional: Mini stapler with an extra box of staples; hole puncher, USB drive/flash drive

GRADING POLICY:

Grades are composed of the total points accumulated throughout the marking period. Each assignment will be given its own point value. Graded assignments include the following: classwork, homework, quizzes, tests, minor writing assignments (paragraphs, short answers), timed and untimed papers, and both individual and group projects and presentations.

DAILY AGENDA/PROCEDURES: When class begins, check the Agenda. When a writing exercise is posted, you will be instructed whether to write it in your journal or type it. These exercises may include but are not limited to the following: mindful writing, sentence exercises, vocabulary practice, preparation for group presentations, and writing reflections.

CLASS AND CONDUCT EXPECTATIONS

Peruse Virtual Protocol on my website under “Taking Care of Business.” VIRTUAL/HYBRID LEARNING EXPECTATIONS

 Throughout this year, teachers will be using a variety of online learning tools and

platforms including Zoom, G Suite for Education (Google Classroom, Google Meet, Google Drive, Google Docs, Google Slides, etc), Microsoft OneNote, EdPuzzle, Flip Grid, Pear Deck, and many others. These are extensions of the classroom and students are expected to follow all Board of Education Policies and expected behaviors as outlined in

theFamily/Student Handbook. Failure to follow these policies will result in appropriate disciplinary consequences.

 During virtual learning, students will adhere to the school’s “Zoom Prep Checklist” and “Zoom Etiquette” guidelines during each class period.

PERSONAL COMPUTER/IPAD HONOR SYSTEM

Keep your laptop closed during class, unless we are doing work that requires technology. Clearly, you may NOT scan the internet or do work for another class during English.

composition requirements outlined on pages 2 and 3.

LATE WORK POLICY: You are given one day to make up missed work for each day of an excused absence, beginning with the day you return to school. Any work not made up within the allotted time may result in a lowered grade (Student Handbook, 34; BOE Policy #R5200M).

If you do not hand in your work on time due to reasons other than an excused absence or agreed upon extension, it is considered late and will receive a 10% demerit for each day it is late.

MY ABSENCE: Under NO circumstances are you permitted to leave class when I am absent (unless your absence has been prearranged). A pass from another teacher will not be accepted. If you do not remain in class, your absence will be considered a cut.

ATTENDANCE POLICY: If you are absent for some or all of a class, find out what you missed. Check Google Classroom for the evening’s homework. Ask a reliable student for clarification. If you miss an assignment, make it up as soon as possible. If you need clarification, send me an email.
