The Port of Gothenburg has an ideal position, with only 1½ hours from open sea to quay. 70% of Nordic industry and population can be found within a radius of six hours. 65% of the container traffic in Sweden is handled by us. We are the only Nordic port with transoceanic direct calls from the Far East, India, Central America and North America. In cooperation with you and other

customers, our ambition is to develop constantly in order to streamline logistics between sea and land still further. Naturally we also offer Scandinavia’s widest range of port services:

RO/RO – 100 departures a week.

CONTAINER – Scandinavia’s largest container terminal with

about 900 000 TEUs.

(5)

RAILWAY – 23 daily rail shuttles and 70 trains per day.

CARS – One of Scandinavia’s largest car ports, 200 000 new cars per year.

OIL – Scandinavia’s main port for refining, storing and transhipping, 22 million tons of oil per year. PASSENGERS – Over 1.5 million passengers per year in international traffic.

LOGISTICS – CFS (Container Freight Station), Scandinavian Distripoint. STORAGE – Safe, efficient storage of empty and loaded load carriers. RPG – Logistics Terminal specialising in the forestry industry.

OUR INTERMODAL SHUTTLE SYSTEM

RAILPORT SCANDINAVIA

The Port of Gothenburg has the best conditions in Sweden for rail traffic and a highly efficient ”on-dock rail terminal” for rapid transhipping. Sweden’s most important consumption and produc-tion centres are served every day by more than 70 trains. 23 daily rail shuttles link the most interesting junctions in Scandinavia to the port – and more are on the way. In addition to rail shuttles,

customer adapted whole train systems contribute further both to improved service and reduced environmental impact. All to generate competitive, environmentally friendly transport solutions to and from Scandinavia’s largest port, the natural goods hub in northern Europe.

RAILPORT Scandinavia is a coherent network of rail shuttle terminals. They are located on important logistic centers all around Scandinavia and have daily rail connections with the Port of Gothenburg. Upon arrival transshipping is taken care of and goods are handled on the spot in the terminal. In addition, Customs clearance and other administration become much simpler and more efficient. With RAILPORT Scandinavia you do not only

have access to Scandinavia’s widest range of routs. You also have shorter lead times and greater flexibility. RAILPORT Scandinavia creates simpler and more environmentally friendly transport solutions with the largest port in Scandinavia as a hub. Thanks to the RAILPORT concept’s unique benefits the Port of Gothenburg has been awarded with the Future Transport Award and the Pegasus Prize in 2009.

CUSTOMER ADAPTED RAIL SYSTEMS

Customer adapted whole train systems leaving from the Port of Gothenburg are an important cog in our vision of efficient, sustainable transports. Steel, paper, oil, cars or consumables

– there are many good examples and each solution is entirely tailored to our customers’ needs.

(7)

RAIL VOLUME DEVELOPMENT

The railway is for our customers an increasingly important link in the transport chain. Since 2002 alone, rail transports to and from the Port of Gothenburg have increased from 6 to 23 daily

shuttles. About half of the container transports now go to and from the port by rail.

Moving goods from lorries to trains has significant environmental benefits. Each year, our daily rail shuttles save 50 000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions. That would equal the emissions from

a passenger car that runs fully 10 000 times around the globe (or about a thousandth of Sweden’s total emissions).

RAIL SHUTTLES REDUCE ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT

ENVIRONMENTAL

IMPACT FACTOR

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN

TRAIN AND LORRY*

Fuel, diesel 21 000 cubic meters

Carbon dioxide (CO2) 50 000 tons**

Nitric oxide (NOx) 450 tons

Hydrocarbons (HC) 18 tons

Particles/dust (PM) 10 tons

* Calculations made by Sebastian Bäckström, WSP Analys & Strategi. The estimate is based on emission data for Swedish intermodal goods trains presented in the report: Environmental Estimates for Intermodal Transport Chains – Detailed Methods of Calculation and Relevant Standard Values, WSP report no. 2009:6. In 2009, 215 500 container units were transported by rail to and from the Port of Gothenburg. The calculation is based on transported volumes registered during 2010. ** Corresponds to emissions from a passenger car that runs fully 10 000 times around the globe. Reduces Sweden’s total emissions with about a thousandth.

Our rail shuttle system is based on well-developed cooperation between the Port of Gothenburg, the RAILPORT terminals, several rail operators, goods owners and the National Rail Administration. This cooperation means that we can link together the logistics of sea and land efficiently and environmentally soundly. Below and

on the following pages you will find more detailed information on our current shuttle routes and the operators we cooperate with. The Port of Gothenburg has company specific rail solutions, but the purpose of the shuttles is to attract unitised flows from cargo intense regions by offering a standardised solution for the inland transit.

RATING

The Port of Gothenburg currently has 20 terminals and 23 shuttles and the port is now reinforcing this network by highlighting the significance of the terminals to logistivs flows. This is achieved by using a rating system, on a five-point scale. Making it possible to measure and evaluate operations in the terminal.

The principle is the same as awarding hotel stars. As a hotel customer you choose your accomodation according to your wallet

and needs. The number of stars tells you what you can expect and our customers will receive the same type of information.

Four parameters are used in the rating system: conditons and geographical location, range of services, safety and security and physical layout. In the long term the aim is for the terminals to provide the same level of service as the Port of Gothenburg.

The terminal’s rating is not a fixed figure, but changes in relation to its progress and range of services.

PORT OF GOTHENBURG RAIL SERVICE CENTRE

CONTACTS PORT OF GOTHENBURG:

CONTACTS TERMINAL OPERATORS:

Port of Gothenburg Rail Service Centre is responsible for rail handling in the Port of Gothenburg. The rail shuttles that currently serve the most important junctions in Scandinavia have been established in cooperation with several rail operators. The goal is to grow by two shuttles per year and to develop the existing ones

by increasing capacity. This means that we can extend our catchment area and thereby the service to our customers. Further-more, we reduce unnecessary and environmentally harmful transports to and from the port, an important part of the Port of Gothenburg’s environment policy.
