SHAUGHNESSY PARK SCHOOL

FEBRUARY 2017 NEWSLETTER

ADMINISTRATION MESSAGE

It seems incredible that we are already heading into our second term! It has been a

wonderfully busy and successful term.

We would like to thank our parents for ensuring that our students are properly dressed for

the cold weather that is now fully upon us. Please contact the school if you need assistance

if obtaining winter attire.

I would encourage you in the next few weeks to review your child’s/children’s’ medical

information and to confirm that all information necessary to ensuring their safety and care

has been shared with our School. If a medical circumstance has arisen since the beginning of

the year, or if there has been a change in a medication taken for a chronic condition, please

contact Vice Principal Perez, so that your child’s records and health care plans can be

updated. Please feel free to contact us, if you have any questions or concerns about these

requests or about how medical information is recorded or shared at school. Thank you for

your attention to these matters. February is I Love To Read Month. We would like to

remind families the importance of reading together as a family. Even older students should

still be read to on a regular basis. As a parent of a preteen, I know this can be a

challenge. Picking a day to visit the library once a week is a perfect activity to spend time

with your child and teens and also gives you some time to find books for yourself. It is

important for your child to see you reading as well, in order to foster the love of reading in

your child/teen.

Angela Perez

Vice Principal

The Daycare parking spots is only for parents who

DROP OFF and PICK UP their Child(ren) from

Shaughnessy Park Daycare.

STUDENT ABSENCES

CALL BACK SYSTEM

The call back system is for students in Nursery to Grade 8 (morning calls only for grade 7 & 8). A staff member will be calling the child’s home in the morning and in the afternoon if parents/guardians have not notified the office of their child’s absence.

It is the responsibility of parents to please call the office at 204-586-8376 before 9 a.m. and before

1:00 p.m. to inform us if your child will not be coming to school. This is for all grades.

After a 2 day absence, the classroom teacher will make contact with the parents/guardianAfter 3 days it is school policy to contact the

attendance officer

In order for this system to be an effective way of tracking attendance, it is really important for the office to have a phone number at which to reach you.

It is important that students attend every day and to make this a habit. Student

learning is impacted by attendance.

Be THERE and please be on TIME for school!

Many classrooms are taking me to breathe - ask your student about the Shark Fin - perhaps they can share how to have a mindful moment with you!

THE TIMBER TEAM is up and running! These awesome students can be seen helping students during the school day – be it at recess or during school ac vi es. Their help was really appreciated during the Santa Breakfast last Decem-ber. The Timber Team volunteers their me to a end training sessions and provide extra academic help; be a good role model; be someone who cares and listens. They conflict mediators and great an -bullying role models.

We will learn about advocacy and social change. A group of Grade 7 and 8 students will be a ending a Winnipeg School Division Forum “OUT” on February 21, 2017

The WALKING SCHOOL BUS

SHAUGHNESSY PARK SCHOOL NEEDS MORE WALKING SCHOOL BUSES! A walking school bus entails a group of children walking to school with one or more adults. The purpose is to provide a safe walk to school and assist families in having their children a end school on a regular basis without being tardy.

Our bus is so popular, we have a student wait list!

We intend to create 3 more routes to accommodate the interest from families and are seeking volunteer parents or members of the community to lead the way. If you are interested in becoming a part of this great community project – we’d love to have you onboard! Please contact the school and talk to Mrs Tingskou.

We would like to encourage parents/guardians to administer medication to their children after school hours. Should your child require medication during school hours, the school will need a health care plan signed by parents and a note from the doctor

indicating the name of the drug to be taken, the dosage and any other important information. An adult must bring the medication to the school in a clearly labeled container.

The medication is kept in the office and is administered by school personnel. A chart is kept for each child indicating the time administered. All precautions are taken to ensure the safety of all children. We appreciate your cooperation.

A child must be kept at home (or taken home) when he/she:

• Has fever, sore throat, infected skin or eyes,

• Is not well enough to take part in their regular school program; or

• Is requiring a greater need for care than the staff can provide without compromising the safety of the student or other

students (i.e. during a pandemic). Resources:

STREET SAFETY

Parents please think about the safety when crossing the street. Children learn from adults let’s set a good example.

When bringing or picking up your children please be aware of where you are crossing the street other small children are following you so

if you cross in the middle of the street younger children think they can do the same.

Please do not bring children through the parking lot it is a very dangerous and busy area and drivers may not see small children. Remember let’s be good role models.

STUDENT PHONE USE

(EMERGENCIES ONLY)

Please be advised that the school

telephone is not to be used by students for personal use. Plans should be made from home the night before or in the morning before leaving for school.

PARKING LOT SAFETY

We are encouraging all students to keep away from the parking lot, they are to use the sidewalk on Chudley and walk along the sidewalk of the school building. There are many cars that pull into the

parking lot and cars leaving the parking lot at the time that the students are arriving or leaving school. Please speak to your child/children about safety and they are not to cross the parking lot, there have been many close incidents that have been

reported.

Thank you for thinking about safety over convenience. All students leaving the school property are to cross at the designated crossings that have patrol crossings.

TRAFFIC SAFETY

PARENTS PLEASE HELP KEEP YOUR CHILDREN SAFE!

Would you please reinforce this safety message with your children?

Children should be reminded that at this time of the year, vehicles often have a difficult time stopping suddenly on slippery streets. When walking to school or leaving school, children should cross at intersections with the school patrols.

Parents are also asked to obey traffic regulations and be extra careful at all times when in school zones.

Just a reminder to let you know that the breakfast program is open daily from 8:00 a.m. to 8:55 a.m. Please be on time.

Weather is changing and all children will be expected to go outside after breakfast. PLEASE DRESS ACCORDING TO THE WEATHER.

BREAKFAST PROGRAM

LUNCH PROGRAM

A lunch program is available for students who have parents/guardians working, attending school, for daily or occasional use such as parent appointments.

Applications are available in the school office and space is limited.

FIRE DRIL OR FIRE ALARM

When a fire alarm sounds, everyone in the school must leave immediately out the appropriate doors without stopping for coats, boots or for any other reason.

Children and adults should line up on the sidewalk and re-enter the building when the “all clear” (three

buzzers) signal is sounded.

Usually, the students are not outside for more than 5 minutes.

ENTRY AND EXIT LOCATIONS

• Nursery and Kindergarten students are to be

accompanied and supervised by an adult or older sibling until the bell rings for entry.
