JUNE MEETING Thursday, June 6, 2019 Masonic Hall of Richmond 5050 El Portal Drive, Richmond
12:15 Luncheon followed by Program
Thanks to Sandy and Cyndie
All of us on the board and all of our members owe Sandy and Cyndie a
huge thank you for the great job they have done as Co-Presidents. Enjoy
being past Co-Presidents Sandy and Cyndie, and thanks for continuing to support the Division!
THE PRESIDENTS' CORNER
Cyndie Swainbank and Sandy Price, Co-Presidents
Rounding the corner and heading for home
This is our last submission as Division 58 Co-Presidents. We have held this position for the past four years. We will have fond memories of our years in service. Here are a few of the precious recollections: The many division meetings, luncheons, and the myriad of speakers, entertainers, story tellers, legislators, and memorable scholarship winners. The volunteers who faithfully show up at 10:00 am to set up Pearlice’s boutique, display the treasures, barter and sell the items, only to turn over the
proceeds to the Scholarship fund. How can we forget our two registrars who faithfully take reservations and check you in at the door? So diligent! How about our caterer and her family and staff who have prepared delicious, nutritious lunches that are something to look forward to every meeting! There are so many behind the scenes volunteers that make our meetings great
The very special Board monthly meetings and
hardworking, dedicated Board members who
planned the programs, recruited new members, kept the Treasury in balance, memorialized the minutes of our division and Board meetings, shared goodwill about the health and needs of our members, shared beautiful scrapbooks filled with memories, reported on latest legislative developments, shared plans of the upcoming student scholarship and teacher grant programs, along with yummy treats and well wishes shared among us. And then the creation and
distribution of the monthly newsletters. These things just don’t happen, like magic! These are faithful volunteers.

Precious Recollections, continued from page 1
Our adventures at CalRTA conventions, Area IV
meetings, and visitations to other Divisions
happenings. These meeting filled us with new ideas that encouraged new activities.
Our new friends, from Division 52 and Area IV, who were so kind to share ideas and welcome us.
The friendly staff at the CALRTA office in Sacramento who answered silly questions and offered ongoing support.
Not to forget the Division 58 members, the old friends and associates and the new recruits! Every month, there were new faces and friends. And a tear for those colleagues who have passed on but leave their legacies of their contributions in this
community.
These are only some of our memories. There are so many more, too numerous to mention. We are grateful for the chance to have served as your Co-Presidents and only wish for the future success of Division 58.
DAY OF THE TEACHER
On May 8th our CalRTA Division 58 sent a letter to every teacher in the
WCCUSD thanking them for their dedicated service to our students, schools, and district.
NOTE FROM ROBIN WILSON
Exiting as Program Chair
The last 4 years have gone by in a whirlwind. After 3 years Co-Chairing with Wilma Grant and 1 year on my own with the Co-Presidents assisting, I will be exiting as Chair of Programs. Many thanks to Wilma for her patient guidance and full binder of potential speakers. Your knowledge and wisdom were invaluable and gave me the tools to carry on the work we started together. Thank you to Sandy Price and Cyndie Swainbank for their valued assistance and advice during the past year. Many wonderful memories were created and I will value them always. Thank you to all the members who thanked me directly. Have a great summer. See you in the Fall at our future monthly meetings!
MEMBERSHIP
Norma Thinger and Jackie Fonken, Co-Chairs
This year we will be celebrating the 90th Anniversary of CalRTA. In 1929, a retired school teacher received a maximum of just $500 a year in pension benefits. CalRTA has accomplished a lot over those 90 years. For awhile, teachers could sit back on those accomplishments and devote time to volunteering, scholarships, travel and socializing, and these are all good reasons for joining (including the access to news of our friends and colleagues) but CalRTA affords us the opportunity to enjoy our retirement without worrying as much about defending our pensions and other benefits.
However, you must remember CalRTA can't advocate without us. Our membership base is our power. Our Division 58 has the ability to reinforce that power through member recruitment. The good news is that there's reason to join even if you never attend meetings, live in California, or even weren't in education. You can still benefit from joining in order to protect yourself. Membership pays for our lobbyist and the hardworking staff who all advocate on our behalf on a daily basis to keep us secure in our retirement, to help through times of poor health, and to support public education for teachers and children. The Government Relations Committee continues to focus on the full repeal of the two Social Security penalties--Windfall Elimination Provision and Government Pension Offset.
Remember, "each one, reach one." Find somebody to join today. Call one of your colleagues and invite them to come with you to the meeting on May 23 or June 6. You can also turn in your suggestions for new members to us, and we will do the rest!
OUR BIG GOAL
To be the dominant and authoritative voice for all retired California educators.
CalRTA CORE VALUES
Nurturing abilities, imagination, and creativity in others.
Belief in free flow of information and
knowledge, openness and shared leadership. Elevation of the status and reputation of the
profession and being part of something special.
Never settling for the status quo, always improving.
Vol 50 No.7 Page 3
By way of introduction, here's a short note about each of these new members.
Jeff Berrington
"For thirty years, I was a music teacher for WCCUSD. I began when it was Richmond Unified Schools with 50 music teachers. Every school
had its own music teacher. In 1991, the department was closed, however, I was rehired in September, most likely because my name started with a
"B". Over the years, I have had the privilege of working at 30 schools. I was at Fairmont for 20 of those. When Elementary music was eliminated, I went to work in Middle and High Schools and retired as Music Director at Hercules High School. Over the years, I met great teachers and wonderful students. Now, as a retiree, I am catching up on reading, enjoy leather working, traveling, and time at our home in Mt. Lassen. I have also enjoyed playing for the Veterans in Martinez a couple of times a month for those men and women who have served our country."
Jolynn Subramanian
Jolynn began her teaching career at Pinole Valley High School for six years, and in 2018 retired from Hercules High School after 16 years of outstanding teaching in AP, Honors and Prep in 9th, 10th, and 12th grades. After graduating from Brigham Young University with a degree in Humanities, she spent two years in Italy as a missionary followed by working as
"Special Collections." This is similar to our Bancroft Library on the Cal Campus. After marriage and three children, she came to the west coast earning her teaching credential from St. Mary's College. Her three children all graduated from Hercules, her son Jeff becoming a
teacher, Nathan a tutor and anti-vaping educator, and Rachel a Doctor., serving her residency in Santa Barbara. Jolynn enjoys gardening, cooking, and attending Osher Life Long Learning Institute classes at Cal State East Bay.
Christie Vincent
"I was born in Sacramento, California and lived there through high school going on to attend Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. It was there I gained a love for teaching, graduating with plans
to start my teaching career right away. However, before this I ended up becoming a United Airlines stewardess traveling throughout the
USA. These many travel experiences also contributed to enriching my twenty-three year teaching career. I met my husband, George Vincent, while teaching at Frances Ellerhorst Elementary School. We have three children and four grandchildren, one of whom was a 2018
recipient of a CalRTA Scholarship. We have continued to share our love for teaching with our family. I taught at Hannah Ranch for most of my years and became close to many fellow teachers, students and parents. Since my retirement, I enjoy my grandchildren, traveling and doing family history work."
JOANNA SYKES TEACHER GRANTS
Janet Duer Smith and Myra Silverman
This year ten teachers were awarded Joanna Sykes Grants. This photo shows Board Member, Liz
Underwood presenting the award letter to grantee Madison Schmalz, a teacher at Richmond High. In the fall we will have articles from many of the grantees describing the successes and challenges of their projects. We look forward to those exciting articles.

SOCIAL SECURITY FAIRNSS – APRIL 2019
We are so fortunate to have Bonnie Cediel as a member of Division 58 and the California leader in the Social Security Fairness movement to repeal the GPO and the WEP. Here is the report of her recent trip to Washington DC. We will be hearing more from Bonnie at our future division meetings.
LEGISLATION
Bonnie Cediel, Legislation Chair
Nearly sixty members of CalRTA and a number of their spouses made the trip to Washington D.C. for the 2019 April 9th Lobby Day to remind California Members of Congress that we are still waiting for the Social Security benefits we deserve. In addition to asking them to sign on to H.R. 141 to repeal the Government Pension Offset and the Windfall Elimination Provision, we asked them to support expanded Social Security
benefits and to support only public schools with public money, rather than fund private charter schools. Thirty-four of the 54 California Members of Congress have signed onto this year’s repeal bill. We
will have to wait until after the Easter recess to see if our efforts will have paid off and more sign on. Both of our Senators have signed this session’s Senate Bill S.B. 521. In addition to visiting Congressional Offices, we had a very valuable planning meeting at the AARP offices on Tuesday afternoon. Then on Thursday, I was able to accompany David Walrath, CalRTA Legislative Advocate, and several CalRTA Legislative Committee members ton five meetings with aides to various House and Senate committees. These aides are the people who actually do the research and write the bills. The minority member’s aide for the House Ways and Means
Committee is someone I have visited with before, and it was very helpful to connect with her again.
Most exciting for me was meeting Thursday afternoon with the main Legislative aide for Rodney Davis, the Illinois Republican Congressman who sponsored the House repeal bill last year and who introduced it again the first day of this Congressional Session which began January 3rd this year. Through Social Security Fairness,
ssfairness.com, I will be able to connect some activists to his office and get more affected retirees from his state to support his bill.
I want to thank Division 58 for supporting me in this endeavor. It gave me a big boost in what sometimes seems a daunting quest. I really appreciate your support!

REMEMBERING LAVERNE HALL
by Nancy Fagan, Daughter
Always proud of his beginnings in Richmond, CA, LaVerne Hall passed away at the age of 92. A WWII Marine Corps veteran, he continued his love of country and community teaching in West Contra Costa Unified School District for 34 years. Verne started his teaching career at Longfellow Jr. High and moved to DeAnza High School at its opening where he was a successful Track and Field coach. As a world class sprinter, he ran for the Olympic Club of San Francisco, qualifying as an alternate for the
1954 Olympic team. Teaching and coaching were truly what he enjoyed, encouraging young people to reach for success and take pride in a job well done. At the 62 he rode his bike solo across the U.S,
from Seattle to Atlantic City. He took pride in telling stories of his travels, to his family and friends. His loss leaves a void in the hearts of many, but his memory still encourages that quest for adventure, accomplishment, and healthy living.
