MHIMA President’s Message Fall 2012

Happy Holidays to all of our MHIMA members! I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving and that the coming few weeks is festive and joyful! My sincere apologies for the delay in our Fall newsletter – interesting how the implementation of an electronic health record consumes your life! I’m getting back on track now and am looking forward to 2013.

This year’s fall meeting was fairly well attended and I appreciate the conversations that we were able to have. We had a good discussion about transitioning to electronic health records and challenges, as well as best practices that we face on a day to day basis.

Jane Schumacher, Jennifer McManis and Traci Waugh represented our state association at this year’s House of Delegates session. My understanding is that they had a great experi-ence. AHIMA has redesigned the House of Delegate meeting to be more interactive and sharing than what has been the traditional meeting in the past. I believe this will provide additional feedback from the delegates on items that matter to their component state asso-ciations and more leadership training.

This year’s not-so-silent auction item at National Convention was a Montana made

wine and class basket. Traci Waugh graciously volunteered to coordinate this

do-nation and in return it contributed $210 to the AHIMA Foundation. Thanks again

Traci!

We have had a lot of changes announced for this coming year. For those that may

not know, Jennifer McManis has been elected to AHIMA’s Speaker of the House –

Elect. Her position starts in January and she will be stepping down from the Past

President position for MHIMA. Jane Schumacher has moved to Bismarck, ND and

is working as an Informaticist. She will finish out her term of President Elect until

June 30, but will not be transitioning to the President position. With that said, I

will remain as the MHIMA President for another term. Joanne Romasko has

gra-ciously agreed to return as Past President.

MHIMA will have several positions open in our election. We will be electing the

following positions: President Elect, Board of Director (1), Secretary, Treasurer

and Nominating committee. Please see further information in the newsletter from

acting chair Laure Agostinelli Hamel.

Our annual Spring meeting will be April 17-19, 2013 at the Best Western Grand

Tree in Bozeman. Jane Schumacher will be coordinating the meeting this year

and I will be requesting assistance from any of you who could help to organize.

Please email her at

[email protected]

if you are able to assist.

May you all have a wonderful holiday season. Make time for yourself and I look

for-ward to seeing you next April in Bozeman!

Sincerely,

Fall Meeting Wrap-up

Submitted by Jane Schumacher, RHIA

MHIMA sponsored several sessions at the MHA Annual Convention in September. There

were a total of 36 registered under the HIM specialization, with 22 attending the coding bonus

session.

Stacey Bradley and Bridgett Siemens, along with their knowledgeable team from Kalispell

Re-gional provided coding bonus session attendees with a wealth of valuable information related

to clinical documentation improvement. Stacey and Christine Seager also provided a CDI

overview concurrent session.

Kathryn Peterson, Healthcare Informatics Tech program director at MSU-Great Falls College

of Technology provided an excellent overview of process analysis and how this activity can

enhance quality of patient care. As we move toward increased use of electronic medical

re-cords, process and workflow analysis is a key success factor.

Thank you to everyone who attended the MHA convention, as well as the MHIMA Business

meeting at that event! Although our group was small, it was great to have a “round table” type

of discussion about the various happenings in our HIM world. Your feedback to the

organiza-tion is greatly appreciated!
